1. Message from the Regional Assistant

My dearest SCOMEdians,

The feeling I get writing this message to you, makes my heart race and my mind fill up on ideas and inspiration. It feels like today, when 2 years ago I was getting ready for EuRegMe XI in Poland, not knowing what to expect or what exactly SCOME was. Yet, what I found would go on to change my life: I discovered Medical Education is as global as a subject as any, and it is not restricted to the small walls of my university. It transcends teachers, faculties, countries, even continents. Just like any type of education, it shapes minds, it creates professionals and it instills ideas and ideals. What makes Medical Education so important though, is the fact that it shapes the doctors of tomorrow; and thus, the quality of healthcare for every single individual.

Isn’t this enough reason to make your own heart race and your motivation grow? Sure, we are a bunch of students with a dream; a dream to have the education we deserve, a dream to have educators as passionate as we. But we fight; we raise our voices and we claim what’s best. We don’t stand back and accept reality as it is, we actively engage to influence it!

Since my very first SCOME sessions, I reached a conclusion that SCOMEdians were the most passionate and determined people I had ever met. And in that group I found my own strength and my own desire for change, which kept growing by every discussion, every interaction with you! Never forget that education is the most powerful, universal weapon and it never stops. My dear SCOMEdians, yes, we are dreamers: but we are dreamers with a plan and there is nothing more effective than that!

The EuRegMe is the perfect opportunity for all of us to unite and learn from each other. With the perfect amount of people to interact, we get to discuss and exchange practices, build capacity on medical education issues and go back home with a whole new toolkit to use! An incredible team is working very hard to prepare the best possible sessions for you and be sure that their dedication will not fail you. Get ready to meet them in the following page and give them a big hug once you see them!

This survival kit serves as your preparation manual for the upcoming SCOME sessions. I would very much encourage you to take a good look at it before you visit Thessaloniki. You can even read it on your way here! I am truly looking forward to meeting all of you (either for the first time or not).

Warm hugs from Greece, Katerina Dima SCOME Regional Assistant for Europe 2015/16

2. Introduction of the SCOME Sessions Team

Yolin

Hello everyone! My name is Yolin Doncheva. I am from Bulgaria and my NMO is ASMB. I am a person who believe in the happiness and the goodness… So I believe that EuRegMe 2016 is going to be an amazing experience! I feel very happy to be a part of the SCOME Sessions Team. That gives me the chance to contribute to the sessions and the event, to start connecting with people from different countries and to exchange experience with them and to learn a lot of things. Since I became a part of ASMB I’m dreaming to get involved in the Association on a national and international level. For me EuRegMe is an opportunity to explore this world of medical students that are active and awake and ready. Ready to change the world. Even though it can’t be changed, we are the ones who can try to improve one part of it. The part, related to medicine, healthcare and education. So I can’t wait for the time to come and for us to get together and to share this experience that, I’m sure, is going to be amazing!

Vasilis

3. About IFMSA

“A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership roles locally and globally.”

IFMSA Vision Statement

The year was 1951, as the world was rebuilding itself after the World War II, when medical students from eight countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, England, The Netherlands and Austria) gathered in Copenhagen to start a non-political organization that would represent medical students. The purpose of such an organization was to “study and promote the interests of medical student cooperation on a purely professional basis, and promoting activities in the field of student health and student relief.” Hence, the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) was born.

Initially three committees were formed: Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME), Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE), and Standing Committee on Students’ Health (SCOSH). One year later the first General Assembly (GA) took place in London, 30 students participated, representing 10 countries. Over the years, the original eight member countries have been joined by many more. IFMSA is the world’s largest and oldest student organization representing medical students, maintaining 123 National Member Organization (NMOs) from over 100 countries.

IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through training, project and exchange opportunities, while embracing cultural diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future. The core purpose of IFMSA is to bring together the global community of medical students at the local, national and international level on social and health issues.

4. About SCOME

“Medical students attain an optimal professional and personal development to reach their full potential as future doctors for better health care worldwide.”

SCOME Vision

There are six existing Standing Committees within the IFMSA: Professional Exchanges (SCOPE), Research Exchanges (SCORE), Public Health (SCOPH), Human Rights and Peace (SCORP), Sexual & Reproductive Health including HIV and AIDS (SCORA) and finally: Medical Education (SCOME).

Medical Education should be a concern of every medical student, as Medical Education includes both curricular activities and extracurricular activities; hence, it shapes not only the quality of future doctors, but also the quality of healthcare.

As medical students are directly exposed to medical curricula, they are the first quality check of medical education and they should rightfully have an influence on the creation of new curricula and curriculum development. It is often the medical students who are the strongest proponents for adapting their education to the needs of their community. We are concerned with facing the needs of healthcare in a modern society and are willing to commit to make sure our education prepares us for them. Here SCOME enters the game.

The purpose of SCOME is to gather students from all over the world who would be interested in playing an active role in their medical education; how to analyze it and then advocate adapting it to the present and future needs as future doctors. As medical students are direct SCOME offers an international platform for medical students to come together, to be empowered and receive capacity building trainings to enhance their impact on the local level through projects and advocacy, and on the other hand forms a tool that represents the voices of medical students worldwide through international organizations such as the World Health Organization, World Medical Association, World Health Organization, World Federation for Medical Education and many others.

Throughout the year, our members come together in two General Assemblies (March and August) and in five Regional Meetings, can participate in online meetings or in Small Working Groups on specific topics, and are constantly updated by the International Team on activities that are going on globally.

Page 8: SCOME Sessions Survival Kit EuRegMe 2016

5. SCOME Structure

The IFMSA Director on Medical Education (SCOME-D) leads SCOME. (S)He is elected on a yearly basis by the IFMSA General Assembly during the August Meeting. As per IFMSA bylaws, the SCOME-D oversees and coordinates the work being done within SCOME, be it by the National Officers or the International team. The SCOME-D is also in charge of preparing and guiding the Standing Committee meetings during General Assemblies and Regional Meetings. At the start of the term in October the SCOME-D appoints members of the international team to assist carry out these tasks.

As SCOME collaborates with multiple external organizations working in the field of Medical Education, the position of Liaison Officer on Medical Education (LME) was established in the year 2000. The LME is also elected on a yearly basis by the IFMSA General Assembly, and is tasked to represent both IFMSA and SCOME to externals; you can find a list of the externals that SCOME works with later on in Chapter 12 of the manual.

To ensure continuous coordination, monitoring and support to all SCOME activities across National Members Organizations (NMOs), the SCOME-D appoints the Regional Assistants (RAs) with the consultation of the Regional Director and the LME. Their main tasks are to keep in touch with the national SCOME groups in their region, provide SCOME members of the region with personal and professional support, encourage and assist the development of SCOME in the region, establish priorities and work on the development of a regional plan of action.

Each NMO within IFMSA that is a member of SCOME is required to have a National Officer on Medical Education (NOME) or a similar contact person who should be elected according to the NMO’s bylaws. Tasks of NOMEs include encouraging and promoting SCOME activities within their respective countries and reporting back to the Regional Assistant and/or SCOME-D. NOMEs are recommended to attend IFMSA General Assembly meetings in March and August, where they can network with each other, exchange ideas and expertise, and gain new knowledge to bring back to their national and local committees.

Local Officers on Medical Education (LOMEs) are in charge of local improvement in Medical Education and related activities at the different local medical faculties of a National Member Organization. They are elected locally based on their NMOs’ respective bylaws and are responsible for tackling local problems.

Meet the SCOME International Team (SCOME IT) for the term 2015/16 below!

6. European Region

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations - IFMSA - represents more than 1.3 million medical students from all over the world.

IFMSA is divided into five regions: Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Mediterranean and of course Europe. Every region consists of a collection of different NMOs that once per year get to meet each other and to speak about all the amazing things they are doing in their own NMO’s . This meeting is known as a Regional Meeting. The Regional Meeting of Europe, known as the EuRegMe, takes place every year around April, lasting for four amazing (and tiresome) days and welcoms more than 300 delegates from every corner of Europe. The EuRegMe in Greece is already the 13th ever EuRegMe!

Out of the five regions, Europe is the largest. With more than 44 National Member Organizations (NMOs), Europe boasts a colorful palette of cultures and an incredible history: in Greek mythology, Zeus became enamored with Europa, a Phoenician princess known for her incredible beauty. Such was his desire for her that he disguised himself as a white bull and carried her on his back across the sea and all the way to Crete in order to seduce her. Europa then became the first queen of Crete.

IFMSA’s European region is led by the Regional Director for Europe. He makes sure that everything in the region runs smoothly, together with the EuroTeam.

Training sessions on specific SC topics On the first day there will be training sessions on specific topics. Each Standing Committee will have a training session on a specific topic. SCOMEdians are encouraged to attend the SCOME related specific training session, however it is not mandatory! The SCOME proposed topics is “Advocacy & Persuasion Skills”.

Advocacy and persuasion skills Have you had trouble making an impact? Does your school ignore your demands and your claims? This training session will revolve around the concept of advocacy (introduction and basic guidelines) as well as around what "persuasion" really means and how you can use it in this process. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills, learn new techniques and the secrets behind persuading externals to listen to your demands and become empowered to go back home and claim the change!

Activities fair The activities fair is one of the most intriguing parts of every EuRegMe! Every NMO has the opportunity to present in innovative and impressionable ways their activites (from all areas of interest!) Make sure to check out the coolest activities your fellow IFMSAians are organizing during this session and gather plenty of ideas!

Training on soft skills Learn some great new skills during the training sessions! Leadership, communication or creative thinking? There is something for everyone!

Plenary During the plenary the European Region will vote upon the location of the next EuRegMe, changes/additions to the Internal Operating Guidelines (IOGs) of the region, policy papers and many more important topics!

NFDP The legendary National Food & Drinks Party… Prepare to taste foods and drinks from all over Europe and experience an explosion in your taste buds! Don’t forget to bring a water bottle with you, though…. You might need it!

Field Trip Yeap, you read that right! We will have the opportunity to take some time off and explore the wonders of Thessaloniki, thanks to the best city guides! Wear comfy shoes, take your camera and get ready!

8. Joint Sessions

During the joint sessions, various topics, relevant to multiple Standing Committees, will be discussed. Here you can find the sessions that will be performed during EuRegMe. There are three SCOME-related Joint Sessions but keep in mind that it is also possible to join a session that is not specifically focusing on SCOME.

SCOMEntal Health (SCOME-SCOPH): We strongly believe it is high time hte sensitive topic of mental health among medical students was discussed! Do universities maybe pressure us more than we can handle? Is stress a much bigger problem than we originally thought? Are medical students supported? We will discuss what is happening in various countries and university settings, how much a problem mental health among medical students really is, how universities can provide support and most importantly, raise awareness and end the stigma. The main aim is to empower students to speak up and request support from the university.

Torture in the Healthcare Setting (SCORP-SCOME): This Joint Session will tackle the issue of torture and the extent of its existence within the European Region, from a healthcare professional’s perspective. Participants will be introduced to what torture really is, how rare (or common) it is in modern day Europe and learn about the Istanbul Protocol. They will also be given the opportunity to understand how to recognize a tortured patient and how to proceed in such cases with respect to human rights. Finally, participants will discuss how to act on a national and local level to raise awareness on this topic and take action among their peers and societies.

Recognition of Exchanges: What does recognition practically mean? And how you can advocate locally and nationally to convince your faculty to take IFMSA Exchanges seriously?! Through this SCOPE, SCORE, SCOME Joint Session you can find the answers to these questions. The Joint Session aims to empower students to advocate (successfully) for the recognition of IFMSA exchanges within their faculty and provide them the specific techniques and tools to achieve it… Are you ready to stand up?

Refugees and Health (SCORP-SCOPH-SCORA): Refugees and Health are currently a very hot topic in the European Region. Of particular importance is also the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights concept (SRHR). This joint session will start with a brief overview of the current European socio-political context in relation to refugees and with an introduction to the often complex health situations that can present themselves in this vulnerable population. The session will then continue with more in-depth work on the cultural barriers refugees face upon their arrival to European countries and on SRHR.

LGBTI+ Rights (SCORA-SCORP): LGBTI+ Rights, what are they? How do they 'work' and how is Europe working with them? We all think that all human being have all the Rights in Europe, but a lot of countries violate the Human Rights especially the Rights of LGBTI+. The session will tackle to gain more knowledge on the topic itself and especially the violations in European countries. In the end we want to see if we can change something about this and how.

Global Health in IFMSA (SCOPH-SCOPE-SCORE): In this session participants will be confronted with questions such as: What is Global Health and what are SDH? Why is it important for med students to know about these topics? How can we implement GH and SDH within Exchanges? (PDT, UAT, GAP etc) How can we further develop the idea of SCOPH

Page 15: SCOME Sessions Survival Kit EuRegMe 2016

Exchanges? Participants will also discuss the advantages of approaching activities through a Global Health perspective, as well as the contribution that exchange experiences make to Medical students’ understanding of current world Health Systems and global health issues.

9. Theme Event In this EuRegMe, Theme Event’s topic will be Preventive Medicine. The role of prevention in eliminating disease is crucial but it’s often neglected not only by many healthcare professionals but also by the curricula of many medical schools. According to the WHO, 68% of all deaths in 2012 came from Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Many of them could have been prevented with the right measures. The aim of this year’s theme event is to familiarize medical students with the idea of prevention in health and the ability to adopt a healthy lifestyle. These goals will be achieved through an introductory workshop on Preventive Medicine that will be followed by five separate themed workshops among which medical students will be able to choose. The topics of these workshops will be:

Diabetes: Different stages of prevention Vaccination, Check-Ups and fear of physicians Stress disorders among medical students Cardiovascular diseases and way of life Sexual Health and prevention

So, as Preventive Medicine is such an intriguing issue that involves medical education, by participating in the theme event we will have the chance to raise our awareness and be much better prepared to advocate for universal prevention!

Day 1: Welcome to SCOME Sessions (08:30-09:15) During the very first part of the very first day, we will introduce the agenda in detail, get to know each other a bit more and most importantly, get to know SCOME more in a fun and innovative way!

Medical Education Systems across Europe (09:30-11:00) During this session we will have the opportunity to look into what a medical education system actually is and in particular what a curriculum stands for. There will be plenty of time to discuss the differences and similarities among the various European NMOs and learn some of the guidelines for curriculum planning and development in order to create our own “ideal” medical education system.

Policy Making in SCOME (11:00-12:15) What is really policy making? Is it as hard as it sounds? Thanks to a very experienced guest we will look into what a policy is, how you can use it to your own benefit and enhance the Medical Education related (but not only) work within your NMO.

Day 2: Note: Make sure to arrive a bit earlier than 14:00 to set up your poster! We will start with a 10 minute introduction and wake up after having an awesome lunch!

Poster Fair (14:10-15:30) What are you currently organizing in SCOME? How does SCOME work in your NMO? What sort of activities/campaigns/initiatives? Prepare a flipchart/poster/banner showcasing your efforts and bring it to the sessions to share with everyone else! Keep in mind that everyone will get a flipchart on the first day to prepare for this session if you don’t have time to prepare before the EuRegMe.

Page 18: SCOME Sessions Survival Kit EuRegMe 2016

SCOME on a global level (15:30-16:00) What are the major achievements of SCOME this year on an external and an internal level? What have been the major changes internationally within our Standing Committee? The one and only Angel, our SCOME-Director, will give us all the inside talk on SCOME and keep us up to date on everything we ought to know!

Accreditation [European Students Union] (16:00-17:15) With a special guest from the European Students Union, in this session we will tackle the topic of accreditation on a European level. What are the major changes that happened during the last year and what is the current European policy on accreditation? Why is accreditation so important and how does it affect our local and national work? We will also learn basic guidelines and procedures for accreditation - and not just limited to medical education.

Finally, we will have a 15 minute wrap-of and debriefing of the day, as well as the evaluation!

Day 3: The day will start at 08:30 sharp (so don’t party too hard) with an introduction and a fun energizer to wake up!

Advocacy Step by Step (08:45-10:00) Do you want to make an impact within your education? Do you feel you are not being listened to by your faculty? In this session we will learn all about effective advocacy and what the specific steps one must take for a successful effort are! Fear advocacy no more, as we have prepared for you an elaborate and interactive session to awaken the confident advocator from within you!

From Apathy to Involvement: A Student’s Journey (10:00-11:00) Why are students so indifferent to their education and their role outside of books? How can we empower students to take on a more active role within university and speak up? We will try to understand the reasons behind apathy and provide specific techniques to both awaken and motivate medical students and strengthen our organizations on a local and national level!

Open Space (11:00-12:00) If you have some specific SCOME topics you would like to raise, here is your chance! During the Open Space session you will have the opportunity to facilitate small group discussion your proposed topics (proposals will be accepted during Day 1 and Day 2). Participants will be able to choose which discussion to participate in and rotate if they wish.

Don’t miss the chance to raise fruitful and important issues and get a broader perspective!

Goodbye/Fishbowl (12:00-12:30) Well, the sessions had to end at some point. Get your tissues ready and prepare for a different kind of closing session, where will try to turn all the new informations into plans for action!

Extra: SCOME Gift Swap Did you think it was going to be all about Medical Education? Of course not! We will also host a gift swap among the participants so don’t forget to bring with you something special from

Page 19: SCOME Sessions Survival Kit EuRegMe 2016

your country to gift to someone else. It doesn’t have to be something expensive: you could even make something on your own and wow everyone!

Food will also (of course) be accepted.

SCOME T-shirt Don’t forget to bring your SCOME T-shirt with you for the group photo! If you don’t have a SCOME T-shirt, make sure to bring a simple, white T-shirt!
