Welcome to Term 2- week 9 2017
School Walkathon 2017 The Walkathon was held on Tuesday June 6. Parents and other interested school community members joined students and teachers for a quick walk or run around the designated course. The weather proved to be a bit cold and the wind chilly but once everyone got moving that was quickly forgotten. This was another great school community event that raises welcome local funds for the school. This assists us with purchasing programs and resources for the school. This year funds will go towards resources for the new gymnasium. I thank the entire school community for getting behind this annual event. I would like to also thank Mrs Cyndi Wiltshire for overseeing the walkathon this year and Mrs Davina Gebert and Mrs Julie Strahan for completing all of the necessary forms and notices and the collection of money. Thank you to the teachers, ES staff, parents and other school community members who helped to record laps, supervise and walk with the students on the day. Thank you to the PFA for the donation of the icy poles. It wouldn’t be possible to hold and enjoy this event without everyone working together. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive school community at TRBPS.
Year 5 Camp at Sovereign Hill 2017 The Year 5 Students and teachers set off to camp early Tuesday Morning for a fun time at the Sovereign Hill camp. Although slightly chilly, the children were dressed ready to attend the Sovereign Hill School and full of enthusiasm! The camp is part of the Australian History inquiry unit of work and they will be staying in Ballarat for two nights. Sovereign Hill Education Centre offers programs delivered by Sovereign Hill Education officers, who are all experienced teachers. They offer unique experiences through their "Discover It Yourself" program and the Sovereign Hill Costumed School Program. This is a costumed role-play day experience where children are fully immersed in the 1850s, learning about manners, costume, behaviour and re-living the discipline of school life on the goldfields. Dressed in 19th century-style clothing, and using classrooms and equipment typical of the era, the children will enjoy four themed schools as they role-play the lives of goldfields students and come to understand social conditions during the great Victorian Gold Rush:
The Red Hill National School St Peter’s Denominational School Ballarat Benevolent Asylum Ragged School St Alipius’ Diggings School
The program teaches students about the differences between their own education and
19th century schooling. During lessons, students use slate pencils, dip pens and ink. At
recess, they enjoy 19th century games with marbles, whipping tops and knuckle-bones.
Through costumed role-play and observing 1850s etiquette the children are immersed
in understanding the lives of the gold rush children. Visiting the trades and businesses
within the Township further enriches their experience and understanding of goldfields
life. I’m sure the children will delight in sharing their various experiences and stories
about their wonderful goldfields life when they return this afternoon. Thank you to all
staff who attended the camp and looked after the children; Ms Hunt, Mrs Fear, Mrs
Kushnir, Mr Matt Serres, Mrs Tamara Faiman, Ms Donoghue and Mrs Helen Boyes.
We can’t wait to hear about your experiences with life on the gold fields.

The Building Project - Gym/Hall
The Premier of Victoria Mr Daniel Andrews and Mr Nick Staikos (the Local
Member for Bentleigh), visited TRBPS on Wednesday to tour the facilities and see
the plans of the gymnasium/netball facility to be built at TRBPS. Thank you to all of
the School Councillors who attended to support us with this event: Mrs Genevieve
Lazzari (SC President), Mr Darius Culvenor (SC BaGs), Mrs Alexis Martin (PFA
President), Mrs Liz Dimopoulos (PFA committee member) and to Mr Darren
Hotton who captured many tour photos for us. Thank you also to Mr Stuart Andrews
(DET - Senior Education Improvement Leader for SEVR) for his support at this
event. Next week I hope to sign off on behalf of TRBPS for the Schematic Design
phase so that the project can advance to the tendering process and it is then onto the
construction phase. It has been stated that we should hopefully turn soil late next
term and begin construction shortly after that. It is hoped that the Gymnasium/
Netball facility will be all completed during the second semester of 2018. We are all
very excited!
It was an honour to have the Premier Daniel Andrews and Mr Nick Staikos visit our
school. The student leaders (Jack, Tashlyn, Charlie and Rakesh) did an absolutely
fabulous job showing the tour group around the school and especially explaining
pertinent information about the school such as, where the new gym will be located.
The year 2s put on an excellent performance singing and the years 6s all performed
with their ukuleles for the tour group. They are to be commended for a fantastic
performance which was enjoyed by everyone. We ended the visit with a lovely
morning tea (thank you Mrs Mel Jacobs) for the staff and the tour group to enjoy
together. Mr Daniel Andrews was very happy to chat with everyone about our
wonderful school and the new project. It was a great opportunity to showcase our
wonderful school.
Compass System and Parent Portal
Compass System
We released the Parent Portal last week and generally the feedback has been very
positive. A reminder to make sure you logon to the portal ASAP and change your
password. We are very excited that June reports will be accessed through the portal
before the July School Holidays. An exciting digital technological progress for
TRBPS!
I hope you all have a very happy and safe weekend! Regards, Robyn Farnell

LEND A HAND – GRADE 6 SHOWCASE – INVITATION TO SCHOOL COMMUNITY
This term our Grade 6 students have been researching about volunteers and their role in the community, as a part of our Civics unit. Students have been investigating the different ways people can volunteer and the
reasons why they choose to do this. They have been working in collaborative groups to research an organisation that helps the community, are ‘not for profit’ and help people whose needs are more severe
than others (e.g. – impairments – physical, social, financial, etc). To celebrate the Grade 6 students’ achievements they will be putting on a showcase for the public. We are inviting all school community members to come along and view all the hard work our senior students have been doing and learn a bit more about the different organisations that are around to help those in need and
ways you can volunteer. The showcase will take place in the SOL Centre,
next Wednesday 21st June from 3-5pm. All classes will be invited to attend with their teacher during school hours earlier in the week.
We hope to see you there!
