The Gilman Program stronglyencourages applications from:

• Students attending community colleges

• Students from diverse ethnic backgrounds

• Students going to non-traditional countries

• Students participating in credit-bearinginternships

• Students with disabilities

• First-generation college students

• Students participating in fields of studyunderrepresented in education abroad

Critical Need Language Award

Students studying a critical need languageare automatically considered for the GilmanCritical Need Language Award (CNLA) fora total possible award of $8,000. CNLAsare awarded to students studying a CriticalNeed Language in a country in which thatlanguage is predominantly spoken. A limitednumber are available each year.

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicant must be a U.S. citizenundergraduate student at a 2 or 4 yearinstitution in the United States

• Applicant must be receiving a Federal PellGrant at the time of application or duringthe term abroad

• Applicant must be applying to a studyabroad program or internship eligible forcredit at the student’s institution of highereducation in the United States

• Applicant must be studying or interningabroad for a minimum of 4 weeks (28days) in one country

• Study abroad program or internship cantake place in any country outside of theU.S. that is not on the U.S. Department ofState’s Travel Warning list or Cuba

• Chinese languages• Bahasa Indonesia• Indic languages• Persian languages • Turkic languages

• Arabic• Japanese• Korean• Russian• Swahili
