    Scaffold Web Site Delayed

Once again, Scaffold is beingsent out through e-mail.Several family deaths and theloaning out of some referencematerials has delayed the

creation of the Scaffold website. Soon, future issues willbe available to subscribersonline, with a simple e-mailmessage announcing the newissue and its specificlocation.

    Back Issues

All back issues of Scaffoldcan be found online athttp://www.origami4you.com.

    New Books

I have not seen any newbooks this month, but I ameagerly awaiting the release

of A PLETHORA OFPOLYHEDRA IN ORIGAMI byJohn Montroll. It is scheduledfor release during March2002 but seems to be running

a little late.I hope this book will bereviewed in the next issue.

    Submissions

Scaffold tries to provide aplace for origami designersto show off their designs tothe world folding community.

For that to work, folders haveto send in their diagrams.Scaffold can accept mostelectronic formats, but DXF(generic CAD format) resultsin very small file sizes.

All models anddiagrams remain the propertyof their designers andScaffold will not change oredit diagrams (with the

exception of clarifying scans)and will publish all designssubmitted. Crease-folddiagrams are also accepted.

    Diagrams can be

    submitted electronically by

sending e-mail [email protected] . Paper

diagrams can be sent to:Joshua KoppelPO Box 641374Chicago, IL 60664-1374USA

Submissions shouldbe accomanied by astatement saying that youwish them to appear inScaffold.

    Book Review

ORIGAMI SAILBOATS is thefourth origami book by Lew

Rozelle. This book is similarin style to his earlier book,ORIGAMI ROCKETS andpeople who did not likeROCKETS will probably notlike SAILBOATS.

ORIGAMI SAILBOATSis not really a book for peoplelooking for a collection ofinteresting models, but isreally more for showing how

simple changes can create awhole line of new models. Ithink this is a good book forfolders who either create theirown designs or who want tocreate their own designs.

One of the keystonesof this book is that the author

    2/8

    2 March 1, 2002

has taken a traditionalorigami boat that involvesturning the boat inside-out,

and created a new foldingmethod that no longerinvolves the often-troublesome maneuver.Unfortunately, step 6 of thenew diagrams has a coupleof mistakes. It shows avalley-fold running straightacross the length of the paperwhen it should show twobends. This can be figured

out by looking at step 7.ORIGAMI SAILBOATS

is written with very cleardrawings and diagrams forquite a few models, many ofwhich look better in waterthan on dry land (rudders canget in the way of displayingsome of the models).

    Overall, I like this book

but I recognize that many willnot. The biggest problemwith this book is not the faultof the author, but is the fault ofthe publisher. I speak of the$19.95 (US) price that manyfolders will find too steep forthe contents.

    ORIGAMI SAILBOATS

is published by St. MartinsGriffin and should be

available wherever fineorigami books are sold.(ISBN 0-312-26906-4 $19.95(US))

    The Models

    This month we have an

excellent dog model sent inby Jim Adams. To roundthings out we have another

Sonobe unit variation fromthe 1980s as well as a brand-new geometric unit.

DachshundAnother fine model from JimAdams. I love dachshundsand I love this model. Thisone not only captures thebody and head well but, unlike most others, it gets the

long, thin tail correct.More designs by Mr. Adamscan be found at:http://members.aol.com/jeadams1.

Skeleton of OctahedronI was assembling somepolyhedron skeletons anddecided that I did not like the

octahedron in the book I wasusing. Moments later I hadthis model. Five minutes laterI had three more variationswith different styles of locks.

Sonobe Unit: ZebraThis is another variation ofthe classic Sonobe Unit. Thisone results in tapered stripeson the face of the unit. It is a

slight variation of my previousunit Propeller which can befound in issue 10 of Scaffoldwhich can be found at:http://www.origami4you.com/scaff10.pdf
