Unilever announced it wasproposing that Sunil Bharti Mittaljoin the Board as a Non-ExecutiveDirector. He will be proposed forelection to the Board at theAnnual General Meetings inLondon on 11 May and inRotterdam on 12 May 2011.

Chevron Lubricants LankaPLC completed the final phase ofits national campaign on roadsafety, as they awarded the‘Caltex Road Star’ Grand Prize toS.Thusitha Weeramunda fromWattala, at a recent ceremonywhich took place at the CaltexHead office in Colombo.Consolation prizes were present-ed to Prajani NilanthiRajakaruna (Gampaha) andR.M.Ranaweera Bandara(Anuradhapura). ‘Caltex RoadStar’ is a community-driven proj-ect endorsed by the Sri LankaMotor Traffic Authority, whopartnered with the Company tohelp conduct this unprecedentedproject across major cities suchas Colombo, Galle, Matara,Kalutara, Kandy, Embilipitiya,Ratnapura, Kurunegala,Anuradhapura and Gampaha.The campaign locations wereselected based on the alarmingnumber of fatal road accidentsthat occurred in each area.

The campaign was conceptu-alized by Caltex following aninterim report of theParliamentary Committee on theincrease in road accidents. It stat-ed that road accidents in the lastdecade caused damage of overRs. 100 billion with more than amillion vehicles damaged.Further, it stated that approxi-mately 150 accidents occurredper day with nearly 5-6 of thecount being fatal. Currently, theGovernment’s spend on road-accident related hospitalizationand recovery accounts for nearly2% of the country’s GDP on anannual basis.

Under phase 1 of the pro-gramme, nearly 1000 Four-wheel,three-wheel and two-wheelmotorists were rewarded withspecial gift packs, based on theirdriving competencies and adher-ence to road rules. Under phase 2,a further number of safe driversfrom each location were awardedinsurance policies worthRs.1,000,000/-, Rs.500,000/- andRs.250,000/-, based on a special

evaluation criteria.In the final phase of the pro-

gramme, a cash prize ofRs.100,000/- was awarded to the‘Caltex Road Star Grand PrizeWinner’. Further, a special cer-

tificate authenticating thisachievement issued by the MotorTraffic Authority was presentedto the Winner and the two conso-lation prize winners amongst sev-eral other special gift packs cour-tesy Caltex.

The special school pro-gramme under the ‘Caltex RoadStar’ campaign included a roadsafety seminar with practicaldemonstrations conducted by theMotor Traffic Police, on safe com-muter practices for childrenbetween the ages of 12 and 17.

Although involved in numer-ous safety projects over the years,the ‘Caltex Road Star’ campaignwas the first project of this mag-nitude organized by Chevron tosupport the efforts of the SriLanka Motor Traffic authoritiesthrough a unique awareness andrewards programme.

The corporate responsibilityprojects indentified and under-taken by Chevron is driven large-ly by a commitment to socio-eco-nomic development, based onresearch that considers the med-ical, social, economic, and cultur-al dynamics shaping the future ofSri Lanka.
