———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK———
Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
Happy summer officially!! Kids are off and
we’re headed toward Independence Day. The
end of June in the Roman Catholic Church marks
the anniversaries of the martyrdom of the first
Roman Christians in the year 64 under the Emperor Nero,
which included the deaths of both St. Peter and St. Paul. Ne-
ro, being an unhinged egomaniac, is believed to have wanted
to build himself a new palace, but to do so, he needed to clear
space and so had a fire started in Rome that burned out of con-
trol for a week. That fire that consumed a great portion of
Rome and took many lives. When blame for the fire was
pointed toward Nero, he shifted the blame to a new group of
strange people living in Rome—the Christians—whose beliefs
and practices were odd by Roman standards. (Rumor had it
they were cannibals because the ate the flesh and drank the
blood of their founder.) Thus began the first mass persecution
of Christians in Rome, where Christians were brutally tor-
tured, set on fire, and given as prey to animals.
Taken up by this persecution were the leaders of the
Christian community in Rome, Peter, who was crucified up-
side down in the Circus of Caligula, across the river from the
ancient city, on the Vatican plain, and then buried in a ceme-
tery on the Vatican Hill, upon which now stands the Basilica
of St. Peter. St. Paul, a Roman citizen, was spared crucifixion.
He was led outside the city on the Road to Ostia, where he
was beheaded and buried along the roadside, upon which now
stands the great Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls.
The tradition of Popes wearing red shoes hearkens
back to this time period, when the streets of Rome ran red
with the blood of the martyrs. Of course, we can see that the
witness of the martyrs bore fruit, for today where is the suc-
cessor to Nero? Nowhere to be found. But where is the suc-
cessor to St. Peter? Still present and active in the city of
Rome and in the world, in the person of the Pope.
God bless,
Fr. Michael

Ministry Minutes is a report of our meetings with lead-
ers of the many various activities and ministries here at
OLGC. We have been meeting quarterly for several years
to keep abreast of what is going on in our parish. At our
last meeting it was suggested that all members of OLGC
should have the opportunity to know what’s going on, so
now we are offering a summary report of each OLGC
meeting. In the future, we will be meeting three times a
year instead of four. Copies of Ministry Minutes are
available at the OLGC entrances to the church.
Please Note
