Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to en-rich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Solemn Vespers & Soup Supper Vespers is the Evening Prayer of the Church, part of the Liturgy of the Hours which is part of the public prayer of the Church. It is principally a recitation of the psalms, such that in the four week cycle of the various hours (morning, daytime, mid-morning, midday, mid-afternoon, evening, and night) the entirety of the 150 psalms are prayed. Here we pray the Evening Prayer on the Sundays of Lent, starting at 6:00 p.m., and followed by a soup supper and time of
fellowship. The various Commissions and other groups take a turn hosting the soup supper. Over the years a nice group of about 60 people usually come. You are invited to join the participants this year. Let’s try to get 100 people here each Sunday evening!
Hungering For Opportunity Our journey with CRS Rice Bowl begins in Colombia, where coffee beans are changing lives! What actions can we take this Lent to change lives — at home and around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.
Maria's story Fighting between armed forces made life in Cumbitara, Co-lombia, dangerous for Maria and her family-so dangerous that 8 years ago they were forced to relocate. They left their home one morning with nothing but a suitcase of clothes. It wasn’t easy making a new life in Nariño, a region of Colombia known for its coffee. People made fun of Maria and her family because they were outsiders. It was also hard to find work, and Maria’s father left home for months at a time to do danger-ous work in a mine. All that changed when the family bought a little piece of land through the CRS Borderlands project. On it, they grow gourmet coffee that is sold in the United States. And Maria, now 18 years old, is passionate about coffee too. She was chosen for a special program and is earning a degree in farming. The program, run by the local university and CRS’ Borderlands project staff, trains young people to become leaders in the coffee industry. During her first semester, she learned from staff as they traveled to farms, teaching growers new ways to plant and harvest. Coffee, which Maria knew nothing about before starting the program, is now her favorite subject. She’s even traveled to Seattle, Washington, to attend a conference on specialty coffee. “It is in my blood,” she says. “Coffee is so much a part of everyday life-not just for me and my family, but globally. It’s not just a plant or something you drink, it brings people together.” Now she has a new career goal: to help neighboring coffee farmers make a living growing the best coffee possible. Learn more about CRS’ work in Colombia.

Collection for Sacred Heart Cathedral This weekend is the 2nd annual Ca-thedral Sunday celebration com-memorating Sacred Heart Cathedral as the Mother Church of our diocese, the home of our Bishop and sign of our unity of our Catholic family. Just as we come together as a faith family to maintain our own church, we are encouraged through this special collection to express our unity with our Bishop through our financial and spiritual support of our Mother Church. Thank you for your generous contributions to this campaign.
Dear Sacred Heart Sisters and Brothers-
Ash Wednesday is only days away.
As I am, you might be asking yourself the question, "What am I going to do for Lent this year?"
A great question and one that no matter how young or old we are - we all should consider.
Lent is not about giving something up; it's about transformation. It's about doing something bold.
This Lent you might consider joining me and many of our fellow parishioners for Best Lent Ever, a free email program from Dynamic Catholic that is based on Mathew Kelly's book " Rediscover Jesus"
The book "Rediscover Jesus " is available for free if you visit DynamicCatholic.com.
Each day you will get an inspirational email with a short video featuring Mathew Kelly and a member of the Dynamic Catholic Team. Throughout Lent, they will guide you through each of the 40 chapters in Rediscover Jesus and share simple ways to bring Jesus into your everyday life.
This is free! All you have to do is sign up at Dy-namicCatholic.com/Lent.
Do something life changing this Lent. Take a 40 day spiritual journey to encounter Jesus - and ourselves- in a deeply personal way.
Let's all have the Best Lent Ever! — Deacon Dan
Don't Give Up Chocolate This Lent... Have The Best Lent Ever!
KC Fish Fry The Knights of Columbus Fish Frys will be held on Fridays at 5:00 PM. There will be a Fish Fry on all Fridays in Lent except Good Friday.
Wedding Anniversary Blessings
Sacred Heart Church wishes to honor couples of the parish who are celebrating wedding anniversary milestones (every 5
years— 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, and so on). Please complete the form available at the church office or on the website under “Family Life”. The deadline to be included in the bulletin is the 15th of the month before your anniversary.

Thank you for your generous contributions to the Collec-tion for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your gift is an expression of solidarity with the suffering people of this region. Through joining in the work of this collec-tion, you are helping to restore the Church and build the future. Please visit www.usccb.org/ccee.
Baptisms during Lent Due to the penitential nature of the season of Lent, baptisms are discouraged during the sea-son; any baptisms which are scheduled will not be celebrated during Mass. The premier time for celebrating baptism is at the Easter Vigil, and thus this is the recommended time
for scheduling a baptism.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Exposition of the Blessed Sacra-ment for prayer and adoration will be offered each Tuesday evening beginning February 23rd follow-ing the 5:15 Mass, and continuing until 5:50 pm. in the chapel.
Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will be cele-brated on Fridays at 8:30 am., prior to daily Mass.
Back to our Roots: Rediscovering our Faith! In our seventh Faith Enrichment session for all adults of the parish
on Wednesday, March 2 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, we will be learning
about the Paschal Mystery. As we enter into Lent, let this be an op-
portunity for us to deepen our understanding of Jesus’ work of re-
demption, accomplished principally through his passion, death, Resur-
rection and Ascension into heaven, known as the Paschal Mystery.
The word Paschal refers to Jesus’ offering of his life as the new Pass-
over (or Paschal) lamb for our salvation. We express this in the Mass
when we say, “We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your
Resurrection until you come again.” Underlying the Paschal mystery
is one fundamental reality: Jesus gives himself completely in love to
the Father on our behalf to restore our relationship with God. And Jesus, through his death on the cross, also re-
veals to us that we are called to the sacrificial love that leads to true happiness here on earth and eternal joy in the
next life. Please plan to join us as we learn more about the Paschal Mystery and how this affects our lives today.

The Knights of Columbus annual Cubs trip showcases a battle against the dreaded Cardinals this year on Wednesday, June 22. A luxurious motor coach will take us to Wrigley for an afternoon game and re-turn the same day. We have a limited num-ber of seats available for this family friendly trip… $50 deposit per seat with your reser-vation and $50 balance at the end of January - total of $100 per seat – the game will be a sellout! Contact Marty Stratton at [email protected] to reserve your seat for this great game. This trip does require the ability to climb steep steps and for people with mobil-ity issues, this might cause some diffi-culty. The staff at Wrigley always provides wonderful support for those needing extra help.
Are you listening to Jesus, the Chosen One? What is He revealing to you? Let his message dwell in your heart. (Luke 9:28-36). If you think God is calling you, call Fr. Thom Hennen, diocesan vocations director at 563-324-1911, or write: HennenT@ diodav.org.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
The second reading from Saint Paul to the Ro-mans is a favorite of those involved in the ministry of evangelization. There are no “secret” disciples of the Lord. Those who exercise good stewardship of their faith realize that publicly identifying themselves as followers of Christ has a cleansing effect on their lives. Openly con-fessing Christ makes them more conscious of how they live their daily lives. Are we content to privatize our faith or are we good stewards of a faith that we share, make public, and regularly identify as a life in Christ?
“Unless you have been very, very lucky, you have un-doubtedly experienced events in your life that have made you cry. So unless you have been very, very lucky, you know that a good, long session of weeping can often make you feel better, even if your circumstances have not changed one bit.”
― Lemony Snicket, Horseradish

Prayer for the Year of Mercy
Lord Jesus Christ,
You have taught us to be merciful
like the heavenly Father, and have told us that
whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew
from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene
from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us,
the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all
by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers
would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion
for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them
feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession
of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.

This is the time for the annual subscription drive for the Catholic Messenger, our diocesan paper, published 50 weeks a year. It is a fine paper with an excellent national reputa-tion. Events and people from Sacred Heart are regularly fea-tured in The Catholic Messenger. This is the official means of communication for Bishop Amos to communicate with the people of the Diocese. Every Catholic household should have some Catholic literature in it, and I highly recommend the Catholic Messenger. Subscription information and enve-lopes are available. Cost is $29 for the year.

Medicating for Pain When is it OK to medicate for pain? If my relative is in hospice, should I permit the use of drugs that hasten his or her death?
When someone we love is dying, we do not want him or her to be in pain. It is only natural to want to ease or end all suffering. The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers these guidelines: “The use of painkillers to alleviate the sufferings of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dig-nity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only foreseen and tolerated as inevitable” (CCC2279). In other words, it is permissible to medicate for pain, but you cannot use narcotics as an end or means to hasten some-one’s death — only to alleviate pain and to minimize a per-son’s suffering. Drugs cannot be used to directly cause a person’s death.
It is important to discuss the kinds of treatment a person would want when he or she is dying. An i m p o r t a n t question is
“Would you want to be medicated even if that would mean you would not be conscious?” It is also important to have a discussion with your priest. Many times one is forced to make terrible decisions about medical care, and it is always good to have someone we trust who can help us make the best choice.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and What better way to prepare for Lent than to watch a DVD exploring the beauty, depth and mystical aspects of Christ’s life. Nicho-las Zachairiadis, a Byzantine Catholic Abbot located in northern Wisconsin has given series of interviews describing the need for growing in an understanding of the mystical aspects of Jesus’s life. He goes beyond just the his-torical facts to the love Christ showed and taught through the three years of His public ministry. The Abbot asks us to dwell on the great love Jesus teaches and how He wants His union with the Father to be our goal. He shows how prayer units us with Christ and how to grow in this through simple daily prayer. There is much to meditate and learn about spirituality and personal holiness in these short DVDs. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings.

February 14, 2016 First Sunday of Lent
Dt 26:4-10 / Rom 10:8-13 / Lk 4:1-13
When I was on a pilgrimage to Israel, we visited Masada, the last stronghold of the Jews after the Romans destroyed Jerusalem. The temperature hit 117 degrees the day we came. We wandered around and wondered what it must have been like to hold out for a long time. When we returned to our bus, we couldn’t wait to get to the cold water that awaited us. The priest said, “The Jews were in the desert for forty years; Jesus was in the desert for forty days; you’ve been in the desert for forty minutes. Think about that.” I have no doubt that Jesus was tempted to give himself food and water when he was en-during the desert heat. I have no doubt that in his agony he might also have thought about seiz-ing power for himself. These are the things that tempt us when we are worn out, beaten down, or simply think we are not getting enough of what we believe we deserve. Lent begins with the temptation of Jesus. Like us in all things but sin, he knew about be-ing and feeling deprived and weak. And while his temptations came while he was in an actual desert, our harsh and barren places may be physical, psychological, or spiritual. We may feel lost,
alone, helpless, and sometimes hopeless. In our times of weakness, evil can find a foothold and con-vince us that we must control our lives, that we can and should have whatever we want. In this account, we find in Jesus an example of how to resist temptation — patiently, humbly, with trust in God’s promise of salvation.
