Cor ad cor loquitur…
(A heart-to-heart dialogue…)
My dear parish family:
I would like to wish all of you a Blessed Easter Season. For the secular world, Easter is over, but the
church continues to celebrate until Pentecost. This is a special time and includes the celebration of
various sacraments. This weekend we resume baptisms, which we don’t celebrate during Lent. Next
weekend, our second graders celebrate their First Holy Communion at three of our weekend Masses.
Then, on May 18th, our eight graders will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, which will be
administered by Bishop Flesey.
I would like to thank the Decorating Committee for their hard work to make the church so beautiful,
not just for Easter but for the various liturgies of Holy Week. They began by getting the church
ready for Palm Sunday. Then, everything had to be changed back to the Lenten décor. On
Wednesday, they made the church ready for Holy Thursday. Then, after the Mass on Thursday, they
had to remove much of the decorations, so the church would be “bare” for Good Friday. Finally, on
Saturday morning, it was time to decorate for the Easter Vigil and the Easter season. I truly
appreciate all that they do for us. While it may seem that their work is finished for a while, they still
make sure that the flowers are watered, so they will last during much of the Easter season.
I would like to thank our VITA youth group for conducting the stations of the cross on Good Friday.
It gave all of us something to think about as we recall the great sacrifice that Jesus made for us. The
weather forecast was for rain to begin almost at the time that the stations would be ending, so we
decided to move indoors into the church rather than having candlelight stations in the peaceful
prayer park and risk everyone getting wet. The youth group also conducted our annual Easter Egg
Hunt on Easter morning after the 10:00 am Mass. The young children who participated had a
wonderful time. Thanks to all who helped make it a success.
As announced at the Masses last week, Cardinal Tobin has written a letter, detailing a new initiative
for the Archdiocese of Newark. The new initiative is called FORWARD IN FAITH
TOGETHER: Our Road Ahead. Copies of the letter and the accompanying details of the initiative
can be found in the bulletin racks at the doors of the church.
Last, and certainly not least, we will hold a prayer service in church at 3:00 pm today to celebrate
Divine Mercy Sunday. In 2000, Pope St. John Paul II declared the Second Sunday of Easter as
Divine Mercy Sunday. Today’s feast is based on the writings of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a
religious sister who lived at the beginning of the twentieth century. During her short life, she
received hundreds of revelations from Jesus about God’s mercy. Those revelations are the basis of a
devotion known as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which is typically prayed at 3:00 pm every day, in
commemoration of the time that Jesus died on the cross.
Thank you for all that you do for our parish.
Yours in the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
