global issues”Kirsty 1
Chocolate
• Most people like chocolate.
• Each of us eats around 2 kg each year.
• Around the world we buy 1 billion kg each year.
Katie 2
Cocoa Production
• Working for a chocolate company would seem a good idea.
• If you were a farmer in a tropical country, farming cocoa beans would appear to be a safe option.

Yacouba’s Story
• He worked on a cocoa plant for 3p a day at the age of 14.
• He was smuggled by a child-trafficker .
• He was regularly beaten when he did not work enough.
• He died three years later from a blood clot.
Douglas 5
Too familiar…
• Yacouba’s story is not the only one of its kind.
• Stories like this are only too common throughout the cocoa industry.
Jane 6
Who makes the money?
• Non fair-trade companies (such as Galaxy, Mars and Nestle) have thousands of consumers, they must have thousands of workers.
• But if the cocoa farmers don’t get the money from a chocolate bar, then who does?

“for example from a price of one chocolate bar…”
CJ 9
43% of the bar goes to Galaxy.
Hannah 10
22% goes to the people selling it
Iain 11
15% goes to Tax
Douglas 12
13% goes to the producers of the other ingredients
Kirsty 13
Only 7% goes to the Cocoa Farmers
Right to health My family has money to pay for a doctor now in case any of us gets sick. That is thanks to people buying fair trade chocolate. Right to education We can go to school because my family gets enough money from fair trade.
CJ 14
Right to freedom from child labour and slavery I am lucky that I can stay with my family. My family works in Fair Trade and earns enough money. There are lots of children who aren’t so lucky: they have to work in foreign countries and are often treated like slaves. I am very lucky indeed.
.
Jane 15
Right to water, food I don’t have to walk so far for fresh water now because we have a water pump in our village. Fair Trade helped to pay for it.
Iain 16
Hannah 17
Recently Cadbury became a Fair Trade Chocolate Company. If a Company like Cadbury can do it why can’t other chocolate companies become Fair Trade as well?
Hannah18
Here is Cadbury’s latest advert which show they have become a Fair Trade Company.
