Fr. Steve’s Teaching for Consideration:
“The Truth is not always the same as the majority decision.” - St. John Paul II
This week, I’d like to try to tackle a very important principle that must guide our future discussions on various teachings of our Catholic faith if these discussions are to bear any fruit in our lives. That principle is this: there is such a thing as objective truths in the realm of morality. Any rational person would be willing to recognize that there are certain objective truths that can be discovered in our world apart from morality. An objective truth is a principle that is always true no matter what- regardless of particular circumstances, situations, or opinions. If a principle is objectively true, then that means that it is true for all persons, of all cultures and societies. For example, two plus two equals four. That is objective truth. There is no situation or special circumstances that could make two plus two not equal four. And even if
every single person on the planet firmly believed that two plus two equaled five (as ridiculous as that sounds), it would not change the fact that two plus two equals four. Always. No matter what. Another example would be the fact that water is composed of two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. That is scientific fact that is true no matter what any one person may think about it. However, for some reason, when we begin to talk about morality, that is, what is right or wrong regarding human behavior, then our modern society becomes very uncomfortable with the idea that there are moral truths about what is right and what is wrong which are objective truths. Our modern culture would rather that we believe that moral truth is relative to your own personal opinion, culture or religious beliefs; that there is no objective moral or ethical truths that are true for everyone and thus are binding upon everyone. But this is nonsense. There are certain truths that are objectively true, apart from the situations or circumstances that may be connected to them. Where do they come from? Ultimately, they come from God, and are communicated to us through our human nature or through God’s divine revelation (sacred scripture and sacred Tradition). In other words, because of the kind of creature that a human person is, as one created in the image and likeness of God, possessing an eternal soul and a rational mind, and who therefore possesses a dignity and eternal worth, there are certain objective truths about human life and behaviors that hold true for each and for all. For example, it is objectively true that abortion, the killing of innocent human life in the womb of one’s mother, is always gravely wrong. This is because to abort a child is to commit murder, and to commit murder is a violation of the law of God placed in every human heart, as well as a violation of the human dignity that each person possesses as a member of the human race. In other words, there is no circumstance, particular situation or reason that could ever justify or make the intentional carrying out of an abortion a morally acceptable act. To murder, to intentionally take the life of an innocent person, is always wrong, no matter what. This truth about abortion is just one example of many objective truths that flow from our human nature, and which are true for everyone, of every time and place. And, like the truth that two plus two equals four, objective moral truths, such as the fact that abortion is always and everywhere morally wrong, remain true whether everyone agrees with it or whether no one agrees with it. Sometimes, the majority opinion is wrong. However, there is also an important difference between objective truth and imputability. Imputability is the theological term for the level of moral responsibility that a person bears for a specific act that they have committed. So, for example, abortion is always and everywhere and for everyone morally wrong and can never be justified, and that truth can never be affected by particular circumstances or situations; but the imputability of a person who has an abortion- the level or degree of moral responsibility that they
bear for the act of abortion (i.e., the gravity of sin incurred), can potentially fluctuate with particular circumstances or situations. I will explain this idea of imputability more fully in next week’s article. God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

From the Desk of Fr. Steve:
As I announced a few weeks ago at the Sunday Masses,
our current Director Religious Education, Connie Koss,
has requested to resign her position, effective July 1, 2017.
First of all, we thank Connie for her years of dedicated
service to our parish and pray that God may bless her
for her hard work at Holy Spirit! Second, we are now
beginning the process of hiring a new DRE for our
parish. If you are interested in applying for this position,
please stop by the parish office during business hours
and pick up an application from Treasaigh. The
position requires roughly 10-15 work hours per week.
I would like to offer this position to parishioners first,
and depending upon response, may then advertise this
job opening to the larger Catholic community. Deadline
to apply is Monday, February 20, 2017 by the end of the
business day. If you have any questions, or for more
information about the position, please email me or give
me a call. Died in Christ: Please pray for the repose of the soul of
Dave Battaglia. We extend our condolences to his wife
Jeanne and to the members of his family as well as to
his many friends. May he live in God’s eternal peace! Family Mass: This Sunday, February 12th, is “Family
Mass.” Please join us for fellowship and refreshments
in the parish hall after Mass. The treats are provided by
the 7th & 8th grade students. All are welcome. Rosary: Our Blessed Mother Mary is pleading with all
of us to pray the Rosary – a very powerful prayer.
Besides praying the Rosary prior to weekday Masses,
we also pray the Rosary at 4:00 pm before the 4:30 pm
Saturday evening Mass and at 10:30 am before the
11:00 am Sunday morning Mass. Please join us in
praying the Rosary. If you are interested in leading the
Rosary prior to one of the weekend Masses, please call
Linda at 834-3568. Catholic Men’s Conference, Men of Faith – Men of
Wisdom is scheduled for Saturday, March 4th at
