SITselect is a not for profit arts organisation dedicated to the promotion of
the arts with an emphasis on contemporary textiles and the applied arts/crafts.
Select is an innovative annual festival that takes place every Spring.
There will also be a mini bus around the Trail on the 7th and 14th May
see page 75 for more details

1
The Select Festival is now in its tenth year and we are
delighted to welcome you once more to the Trail. Stroud
and the surrounding area is rich in creative talent and
the Trail provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the
glorious valleys and countryside as well and meet
the makers and see the work they create.
SIT select works to represent the work of local and
national designer/makers and the Trail is one way of
truly experiencing craft at its origin.
On the Trail you will be able to see a wide range of
crafts and appreciate different approaches to design.
Always something new to experience – plus the first
hand opportunity of meeting the artist, soaking up the
studio and workshop atmosphere as well as enjoying
exhibitions curated by the artists. It is also a wonderful
way to buy and own a piece of original handmade work
lovingly designed and made. So much better to own
something that has the mark of the maker rather than
mass produced things.
Again this year we have a mini bus that will take you
round the places so you can sit back and relax.
Book via the SIT select website. So wander walk – talk
– relax – shop and commission new work. But most of
all ENJOY.

Jenny Bicat trained in Fine Art. She puts colour into
cloth drawing on her knowledge of painting. In her
studio using traditional [non-digital] screen printing
techniques she develops intricately engineered designs
on silk, linen and calico fabrics. She sews flat pattern
pieces together to make unique garments, scarves and
occasional decor pieces. She delights in combining the
best traditions of twentieth century art and craft with the
often sculptural experiments of modern fashion.
Currently she is working with Artist/Weaver Bella Peralta
exploring the possibilities of printed warp weaving for
the Two Make Project. She is a member of The
Gloucestershire Guild based in Cheltenham.

Liz Valenti started working with paper by experimenting
with newspaper collages. This was the beginning of
working with paper and playing with the illusion of real
fabrics and clothes. She uses a variety of papers, from
recycled through to specialist papers. Each inspires the
next approach for technique or subject. Liz likes to work
in a series, expanding an idea and extending the
research potential.

“I make stoneware sculptural pieces for home and garden.
Scale varies from just a few centimetres tall to over
1.2 m. They are handbuilt from black and (separately)
white stoneware clays. In all the work I make I am
looking to explore the relationship between inner space
and outer form; where they meet and merge one into the
other. This sprang from an interest in calligraphy and
typography, but includes all organic forms – plant and
animal, where inner nature describes outer appearance
– each is expressed in, and through, the other.”
Opposite Waitrose on the London Road take right turn
up Field Road. Bowbridge Lane is a right turn just
before the Hospital main building on Field Lane/
Trinity Road. Proceed about 300 yards along Bowbridge
Lane, past left turn to Lower Churchfields. Shortly after
this you will see a raised walkway on the left. Number
39 is identified by a blue lattice fence/willow hedge.

Lizzie trained in Textile Design and Surface decoration.
Although often drawn to mixed media, Lizzie is now
exploring her love of pattern and colour using print. She
carves her designs in lino and block prints directly from
these, or transfers her images to silk screens using

including a collection of cushions, tea towels and other

Anna has a condition called Synaesthesia, which blends
her sensory experiences; her work is commonly
influenced by this. For Anna, sounds conjure flavour –
smells and temperatures evoke colours. After
graduating from the Contemporary Crafts BA at
Falmouth University, she has continued to develop her
skillsets in a variety of materials alongside her primary
focus of metal-smithing. Anna builds kinetic sculptures
alongside jewellery ranges with a multi-sensory focus.
“I like the idea of people forming a deeper connection to
objects than simply an aesthetic one. A memory jerked
through scent or a comfort found through touch.”

Helen sculpts and ‘paints’ with wool in her studio in
Chalford, using needle-felting and wet felting
techniques. She is particularly inspired by the nature
found in the valleys around Chalford, along the banks of
the Severn in Gloucestershire and on the islands off
Wales and Scotland. Rare-breed fleece, plant-dyed
Cotswold fleece and alpaca wool add a natural quality
to her portraits of animals, birds and wildfowl.
Collections for 2016 will include a study of Wild Cats
inspired by the colour of onion skin-dyed Cotswold
fleece and a series of Nuno-Felted scarves.
Helen’s studio will be open from 11am – 2.30pm during

Julia YeminVictoria Works Studios, London Road,
Chalford GL6 8HN
m: 07970 224470
www.juliayemin.com
The inspiration for Julia’s figurative and abstract
paintings is drawn from her East African childhood as
well as western culture and mythology. Her work refers
to real events and reflections and evokes visual
memories, perceptions and dreams. The paintings
recount stories – often humorous, symbolic or
philosophical – about people, places, animals or spirits.
Each painting is a journey. She paints on paper, canvas,
carton and wood and enjoys experimenting with
different acrylic paints, China inks, conté and water-
soluble crayons, gouache and pastels. Her paintings
and textile works have been exhibited world wide.

Annie Hewett: decorated domestic slipwarejoint artist-led exhibition at Frogmarsh Mill
Frogmarsh Mill, South Woodchester, Stroud GL5 5ET

www.studiopottery.co.uk
Annie’s work combines her enthusiasm for plant forms
with her love of letterforms and calligraphy. Using
Sgraffito, there is a limitless scope for decoration and
pattern-making. Sgraffito is the technique of drawing
and cutting through coloured slips to reveal the clay
beneath. All the work is completed whilst the clay is in
its raw state and then fired with a transparent glaze.
She does feel that it is important that her work can be
used on a daily basis, is tough and resilient and can
be washed in the dishwasher if required.

“We began our partnership in 1991 after leaving the
Royal College of Art and Middlesex University with
Degrees in Jewellery and Metalworking. We love to play
around with colour and pattern. Our contemporary
range of silk-screen printed, figurative metal Clocks,
Jewellery and Sculpture is characterised by bold blocks
of colour with inky detail and contemporary pattern.
We work in our Garden Studio in Cornwall where the
light bounces around to give new perspectives and
trigger responses, perhaps inspired by a worn piece of
paper picked up, an old scrap from a junk shop, plastic
washed by the sea, or the colour of the garden with the
sun on it.”

“I am a passionate part time potter making functional
household pots. Most of my work is thrown at the wheel
but I enjoy the challenge of different making processes
and techniques and use a variety of clay bodies. I have
a small palette of glazes that I use individually and in
combination and the limited decoration is freely applied
to accent the form of my pots. In 2015 I was a finalist in
the BBC’s The Great Pottery Throwdown and this
experience has ignited a desire to make pots to enrich
people’s lives.”
From Amberley, drive down Culver Hill past the
Amberley Inn. Half way down the hill turn right up a
short steep hill immediately after the Scout hut. Park
in front of Little Kestrels, the last house on the left.
From the A46 turn off the main road up Culver Hill,
signposted for Minchinhampton. A short way up turn
immediately left after the cattle grid and continue up
the steep hill. At the small crossroads turn right.

Nicki makes knitted textiles in 100% lambswool,
sourced from a mill in Yorkshire. She knits her fabric on
a manual knitting machine, then felts it gently with
rainwater and organic soap. After stretching and
pressing it becomes a wonderfully soft, robust material
which she uses to make scarves, cushions and other
items for the home. Her work is all about pattern and
colour. She sees patterns everywhere – from paving tiles
and manhole covers, to vintage textiles and
wallcoverings, and of course in nature – which she
interprets and translates into designs for her knitting.
From Stroud, take the A46 towards Nailsworth. Just
past Brown’s timber yard turn left up Culver Hill
signposted to Amberley. Take the second right turn
opposite the Amberley Inn, in front of the school.
