On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Gentlemen of Aspen RFC, welcome to the 45th annual Ruggerfest, and
Aspen, Colorado. This promises to be a fun and exciting weekend of rugby and camaraderie. For those making their first
Ruggerfest, enjoy all that our historic town has to offer, and we hope to see you for decades to come. For those returning to
Ruggerfest, welcome back and have another great weekend. The tournament will have some exciting and highly competitive
rugby. Old rivalries will be renewed, and some new rivalries may arise.
The Open Division will have teams travelling from London, New Orleans, Kansas, utah, and throughout Colorado. These
teams will range from the defending Ruggerfest champion Denver Barbarians to the seasoned englishmen of the Men of the
Willing, to 2011 Division II National Champions New Orleans, to the Division 1a youth and energy of the air Force academy
Cadets, and everything in between.
The Over 35 Division provides outstanding play with teams from London, Virginia, Kansas, California, and throughout
Colorado. We welcome both old and new friends to this division. Good luck to the Dark and Stormy Misfits in trying to repeat
in this highly competitive division.
The Over 45, 50, and 55 Divisions will provide outstanding competition with veterans from Virginia, Florida and Colorado.
We welcome many old friends in these divisions. Good luck to the Virginia Cardinals as defending 45 and 50 Division
champions and the Virginia Sons of Beaches as defending 55 Division champions.
Sunday provides an ageless Wonders Match of Over 60 players from Florida and Colorado, highlighting and honoring the
elder statesmen of our sport.
We thank our City of aspen and its many departments that contribute to the success of our event. Wagner Park and Rio

congrats from past to presentI was with you in the beginning and am with you now - congrats and good luck. Stacy Standley, Mayor 1973-1979
Congratulations on your 45th anniversary. I bless the great athletes who through the years have given me great joy (and many tears)! You are the best, Herman edel, Mayor 1979-1983
I will never forget the wonderful Saturday night get together of all the Rugby teams in September 1972, my first month in town, at the nightclub below the Center. Our Rugby boys played hard and well, and as befits their reputation as tough guys, celebrated afterwards with vigor. I still have an aspen Rugby sweat shirt bestowed on me when serving as Mayor. I never missed our teams playing in the Rugger Wagner Park Bowl, and one year in July the team played in a driving snow storm in the mid 80s. I was honored to give the championship trophy to the team captain with then announcers, Jim Span, ed Cross and Billy Tomb close, at hand. Congrats on surviving and thriving! Bill Stirling, Mayor 1983-1991
Congratulations on 45 amazing years! Heres to 45 more... John Bennett, Mayor 1991-1999

The aspen rugby family lost a beloved son this year. Phillip Stephen Layne, son of club legend Steve Bronco
Layne and wife Susan, passed away March 22nd, 2012 age 21.
Philip Layne earned $321,353 as a cutting horse rider. He picked up his first limited-age win in December, 2007
at the NCHa Futurity aboard a smooth-moving gelding, Dual Ya Scoot, that hed bought two weeks earlier from
one of cuttings top non-pro riders, breeders and owners Chad Bushaw, Weatherford, Texas.
Four days after winning the Limited Non-Pro event in Will Rogers Coliseum with a 220 aboard Dual Ya Scoot
(Smart Lil Scoot x Smokin Dually x Dual Pep), bred by Bar H Ranche, Weatherford, Texas, Layne and the same
horse qualified for the 2007 NCHa Futurity amateur and Non-Pro finals.
Layne and Dual Ya Scoot won the 2007 Futurity amateur finals with a 219 score. They also placed third in that
years Futurity Non-Pro finals with a 218.5, capping an incredible performance. The duo earned $105,245 at
their first cutting show.
Layne and another horse, Hills Rim Shot (Playgun x Lynneas Smart Lena x Smart Little Lena), made the Limited
Non-Pro finals and Non-Pro semifinals at the 2008 NCHa Futurity. Two months later, they finished as Futurity
Non-Pro Reserve Champions at the 2009 Tunica Futurity in Tunica, Miss.
Layne studied at Weatherford College in Weatherford, Texas, and worked while continuing to compete as a
cutting horse rider.
Phillip will be missed by all who knew him.

why they play rugbyThis is the 45th anniversary of the aspen Ruggerfest and thousands of players have come to this tournament over the years. On the third weekend of September they take over the town like locusts. For many residents of aspen what motivates these players is an enigma. experts on the sport have been debating it forever and there are many publications on the subject. On this occasion it might be a good time to examine the arguments and find the truth of the matter.
Some postulate that rugby is a noble example of some innate human drive to compete, that like many other sports, it is a metaphor for life; on the field teams act out the natural human tendency to take control of their destiny in the face of adversity- the face of adversity being the other teams ugly mugs and their destiny to advance the ball like Clydesdales.
Others see the game as a throw back to days of old, way before the Geneva Convention, back to the time of Hammurabi when it was considered right and just to inflict pain on ones fellow citizen. These commentators point out that rugby has no socially redeeming qualities; that it is a vestige, an anachronism, an protrusion from a time that modern day society would do well to move beyond.
Pundits from both sides with their pontifications have more than complicated a very simple game in their quest to be relevant and respected. They have attributed far too much meaning to the huffing and gruffing goes on during a match.
Rugby players participate on the field for one reason and one reason only: they play for beer! If someone says otherwise, they are truly misinformed. No matter what evidence they cite to prove their points, they are plain wrong.
This basic motivation is not just limited to the players. Coaches, referees and administrators argue in defense of rugby, that it is a game where lifes lessons can be learned far more effectively than in the classroom, lessons about how to deal with adversity, the need for perseverance, and the values of sportsmanship and fairness.
But their arguments are self-serving.
Their raison detre is delusional and meant to justify the inordinate amount of time they spend on weekends traveling to games, standing on the sidelines, looking at players slog on the pitch.
In all sorts or weather they wait patiently for the final whistle to blow so they can head towards the pub, under the pretense they can seek shelter to immediately analyze the game.
But careful observation reveals that they spend far more time lifting their mugs to their lips and evaluating the virtues of their beer selection rather than gauging their player selections.
Players too are disingenuous in their justifications for playing.
Week in and week out with reckless abandonment they plod up and down fields, sometimes as hard as cragged cement, other times muddied with dirty puddles deep enough to drown in.
When asked about their reasons for playing, like politicians they divert their eyes towards the horizon like they can see something no one else does, and like politicians their answers are tailored to the inquirer at the moment; no two answers are ever the same.
a player may come up with a noble answer in response to one query and a humorous response to another, but never will players reveal their true fixation with the sport lest they be outed for their ignoble motives.
The plain truth is that for neither love nor fame nor celebrity do players go to the great lengths they do to play rugby on the weekends. They play to work up a thirst which they can only slake by imbibing in their preferred blend of water, barley, malt and hops!
its that simple. Cheers!

Once again, that ancient bell has tolled for one of the Aspen Gentlemen, irish Bill Tomb - a great friend, and
longtime linchpin who worked hard to keep the Aspen Gents going. Billy was a skillful rugger, an even better
referee and as an administrator/mentor he managed to carry the many burdens of maintaining and improving
the Club and Ruggerfest. Billy loved rugby, he loved the aspen RFC and he deeply loved Ruggerfest. He put an
enormous amount of his life, time and energy, and occasionally dollars, into continuation of rugby in aspen.
When Messrs. Sherlock, Glaccum and Oliphant departed aspen, Billy stepped up for the Club with a positive,
intelligent attitude. He recruited coaches, players and cleverly organized the Clubs initial tour to england. Without
him the Club would not have achieved the success it has.
Bill was an outstanding deputy sheriff and jail supervisor for Pitkin County - occupations he pursued with gusto
and intensity.
as Salty and his era of ruggers were taking aspen rugby to the pinnacles of american rugby, Billy Tombs life took
a sad turn. unfortunately, his lovely wife Sherry fell ill with aLS. Bill looked after her for seven long, difficult and
painful years, and when Sherry passed away, a large part of Bill died also. Life for Bill outside of rugby became
very harsh.
We, the Gentlemen of aspen, honor his memory for all he did; in building and bridging the club as it grew with
continued successes. We also remember and treasure him for his great and constant devotion to Sherry. Billy kept
the torch burning - he added to the flame. He was a lion in our midst and we scarcely knew it. Those fortunate
enough to be among his close amigos remember him with humor, laughter, wit and sarcasm, and for his love-
all positive attitude.
Bill Tomb, rest in peace. You left us the better because of yourself and your actions.
