The Golden City
Welcome to the 2012 Rossland Vacation Guide! We hope it will help you make the most of your Rossland experience. Rossland’s confluence of cul-ture, adventure and lifestyle make it a truly special place
to visit and an idyllic place to reside. For those who are here to take advantage of our four
seasons of unbridled play, the Rossland Range will never disappoint. And our charming downtown core will delight with heritage buildings, boutique shops, spas and restaurants. For a more cultured experience, there is plenty of art by local artisans and live music to fill your soul.
For history buffs, Rossland boasts a rich mining history full of colourful characters and tales of boom and bust. Incorpo-rated in 1897, Canada’s Alpine City is nestled in a crater of an ancient volcano at an elevation of 1023m (3410 ft). The town came into existence when the historical Dewdney Trail was built next to what is now Rossland, bringing prospectors in search of gold.
Rossland’s vivid past is a direct reflection of the cast of char-
acters who came to mine its resources as early as 1890. By 1897, Rossland was the third larg-est city in B.C. The population was a bustling 7,000, with 42 saloons, four banks and 17 law firms. There were also four newspapers and a daily train from Spokane, Washington.
By 1929, the combined output of the main mines in Rossland totaled almost $165 million, earning Rossland the name, the “Golden City.”
Enthusiasm for the sport of skiing began with a young Norwegian named Olaus Jeldness who moved to town in 1896. Within two years he had organized a ski club and Rossland was ready to hold Canada’s first national ski cham-
pionships, an event Olaus would dominate for years — his jumping skill second to none. Old stories are told of Jeldness jumping a train for an audience in front of the station. Since those early days, Red Mountain has been known as a premier ski destination.
Visit the Rossland Museum for the complete story on the area, or pick up a copy of the Historical Heritage Walking Tour brochure, available at the Rossland Chamber of Commerce and the Museum.
RoSSland Fun FaCt:> Rossland was incorporated in 1897. Founder Ross thompson wanted it to be called thompson but there was already a

OuR uNIquE mountain community privies inspiration for many local and visiting artists. Many diverse mediums are represented in this unique town, from potters and painters to craftspeople, filmmakers and musicians. Rossland is abundant with local talent. The com-
munity hosts a number of events and venues, which feature local artists’ work. The Rossland Council for arts and Culture
is involved in both visual arts initia-tives, music and film events including fall/winter concert series. The annual Rossland Mountain Film Festival, held in November showcases local film and multi media presentations, music, film maker workshops and guest speakers . iron Mountain the-atre, the professional Rossland based theatre company, delights audiences with their creative theatre including Ski Bum the Musical.
The Rossland light opera Players,
British Columbia’s oldest amateur musical theatre troupe, stages a different musical each winter. The group’s wardrobe and prop collection is in itself a glimpse into the history of Rossland’s dramatic past.
Located on Columbia Avenue in the heart of town in the historical Bank of Montreal building, the Rouge Gallery gives local artists a place to showcase their exceptional talents.
Every July and August for the past 25 years, the Gold Fever Follies put on a different show at the Rossland Miners Hall, which houses this lively young professional troupe. Each show is loosely based on the historic events and people of early gold rush days. The musical play delights with vivacious music, comedy and historical burlesque. It is a nostalgic experience not to be missed!

RED Mountain Resort is ocially certied as a denitively “bad” resort, as voted by the Association of So Good it’s Bad Winter Resorts of North America. Documentation of said “suckiness”, or “too-much-pow-I-can’t-see #@$%!”, which singularly or collectively result in Recognizable Badness, as underlined in Charter 250 of the Unied Code of Shred, whereby terrain, conditions and overall vibe are so overwhelmingly “bad” (like, you quit your job bad), that they’re actually “good” (like, holy cow this is insane good), can be found at redresort.com/SGIB.
SUCKCERTIFIED
Rossland Vacation Guide 2012 | www.rossland.com 9
“uNREAL, DuDE!” I screamed to my ski buddy at the top of my lungs, doing my best not to inhale champagne-light Kootenay powder. I had an epiphany that day in 1998 on Mt. Roberts,
during our annual road trip.Words cannot describe the feeling I
had after four days of non-stop storm snow, piling up knee-high, chest-deep, face-shot. Downright gasping for air — well, yes, it was as they say around these parts — “snorkel” deep, or is that “stupid” deep!
On that fateful day, I fell immediately in love with Red Mountain, its amazing sidecountry, and of course Rossland and its beautiful people. Red is such a kick-ass ski resort as it’s great for any skiing ability, but let me indulge you in a few of my favourite features.
Hitting your face, over your head, comparable to flying
through clouds — it can be downright spiritual. This feeling is what I yearn for and Red Mountain delivers, time and time again. Explore some of my favourite runs at Red, like Pow-der Fields, War Eagle, the Slides, Ruby Tuesday and my new favourite, Captain Jack’s Trees!
Some of the terrain is, simply put, the most challenging anywhere. Steep chutes, vertical faces, perfectly spaced trees, cliffs, rollovers, tree hits, road gaps, frozen ice falls, snow ghosts — you name it, Red has it all.
For those interested in a bit less intense ride, Red offers a great variety of beginner and intermediate terrain that can be accessed from the four lifts situ-ated on the hill — Red chair, Motherlode chair, Silverlode chair and Paradise chair.
For first-timers and tots, Red also offers a Magic Carpet and a T-Bar that whisks you up very gentle terrain for a great learning experience. Why not sign up for a ski or snowboard lesson at Red while you’re at it? You’ll get a new Kootenay outlook on life.
➤
A Skier’s PARADISE
RoSSland Fun FaCtS:> the first World Cup Ski Race was held in Canada in 1968, at Red Mountain.> the first chairlift in Canada west of Quebec (Mont tremblant the only other) was built in 1947 at Red Mountain.> olympic Gold Medalists nancy Greene and Kerrin lee Gartner both grew up skiing the slopes of Red.

For sidecountry enthusiasts, Mt. Roberts is one of four easily accessed sidecountry peaks that Red Mountain has to offer. Record Peak, Mt. Grey and Mt. Kirkup complete the line-up as a backcountry rider’s paradise.
All who head out beyond boundaries must be trained in avalanche safety and first aid, or should hire a certified guide who will ensure a safe, posi-tive outdoor experience. Red Mountain offers avalanche safety courses and guides to all our visitors.
Before you go out, defi-nitely check avalanche and snow pack conditions at www.avalanche.ca. For those who would like to read about some of the backcountry options around the Rossland Range, pick up the West Kootenay Backcountry Guide by Brad Steele, available in most out-door equipment stores.
Cat skiing and cat boarding with Big Red Cats and Valhalla Powdercats is an excellent way to satisfy your need for fresh powder. Both offer qualified guides show-ing you all the best untracked gladed trees and bowls — all yours for the taking!
The folks that make up this colourful mountain community are unlike anywhere in the world. As you make your way up the chairlift, please don’t be alarmed if you suddenly get as-saulted by kindness from com-plete strangers who will proudly show off their mountain and their favourite powder stashes... well, maybe not all their secrets, but enough to make you feel like a Red Mountain lifer.

WITH FOuR SuPERB cross-country trail networks less than an hour’s drive apart, Rossland is a true cross-country ski destination! And the locals
agree: between the Black Jack Ski Club, the Castlegar nordic Ski Club, the Beaver Valley Ski Club, and the nelson nordic Ski Club, there are over 2,000 club members. With a regional population of only about 30,000, that’s some cross-country skiing enthusiasm!
Thanks to abundant snowfall and high eleva-tions, the season starts early and ends late. Dedicated Nordic stores with full-service sales and rentals will get you equipped and ready to hit the trails. And if needed, lo-cal instructors are happy to teach you the ropes.
On the trails you’ll find beautiful alpine views, open meadows, enchanting forests, cozy cabins, a Nordic terrain park for kids, a biathlon range, lit night skiing... and fun.
Cross-country skiing is consistently ranked as the world’s best fitness activity, due to its total-body yet low-impact nature. And it’s a great way to get outdoors in the winter and get fresh air. It’s also one of the most inexpensive sports out there: a day pass is anywhere from $5 to $15. Skiing is believing!

Summer Story
LONG LAzY DAYS by the lake, fantastic walk-ing and hiking options and plenty of camping opportunities make Rossland’s summers truly spectacular.
Local walking and hiking trails in and around Rossland offer many options. Start at lo-
cal favourite Centennial trail, a leisurely stroll along the reservoir. Or for something a little more challenging, consider the five- to six-hour hike up to old Glory summit, Rossland’s alpine peak just north of town off Highway 3B.
For a complete experience with nature, camping opportunities abound in this area. Provincial Park campgrounds at nancy Greene Park, texas Creek Campground (Gladstone Provincial Park), Syringa Campground, and Kokanee Springs Provincial Park provide idyllic locations. Just two blocks from the Rossland Museum is the lions Campground, located in a beautiful park-like set-ting with flush toilets, showers, sani-station, barbeques, free firewood and more.
On those really hot days, lakes in the Kootenays will cool you off and refresh your soul. nancy Greene Provincial Park (29km from town) is the perfect swimming hole and camping spot for the entire family. Further along to the west, Christina lake’s warm waters offer loads of summer fun with sandy
beaches, camping and power boating opportunities.
Whether you prefer fly fishing, casting, trolling or ice fishing, the South Kootenay is second to none. It seems wherever you cast a line, the fish are biting. A short 20-minute drive from Ross-land, the mighty Columbia River offers some of the best fishing in the world. Pick up a copy of Kootenay Fishing at any Visitor Information
Centre to find out where you can cast your line!Or you might want to try horseback riding in the Rossland
Range. Rossland’s Record Ridge Riding offers one-hour to full-day guided horseback trips, plus overnight excursions. Record Ridge Riding can accommodate both experienced and inexperienced riders.
There is so much to do and so much to see around Rossland in the summer, that if you manage to leave you’ll be sure to come back for more.
Hot summer Days
RoSSland Fun FaCt:> an easy, wide, hard-packed 5km loop trail gently meanders around nancy Greene lake. the trail follows the shoreline, offers
lake views and will lead you through a marsh area as well as a mixed forest of pine, spruce, fir and larch.
Before you head off to hike the trails around Rossland, pick up a copy of the Rossland trail map at Revolution cycles and service or email [email protected]

VARIETY IS the spice of life, so the saying goes, and when it comes to mountain biking in the Rossland area, it’s down-right zesty. Rossland has an extensive trail network that spans some 170 kilometres and offers an array of enticing options. Before you go, pick up a Kootenay Columbia Trail Society (www.kcts.ca) trail map at Revolution Cycles or tourism Rossland and don’t forget to ask about new trail
development. Shuttle drops are available — be sure to stop into Revolution Cycles to enquire. Ready to roll? Here are my quick picks to keep your Ross-land cycling adventure sizzling:
Whole enChilada7 Summits: Let me give you seven words why this 30km “IMBA Epic” trail
is world-renowned: challenging, technical, exhausting, exhilarating and jaw-dropping beautiful. It is all that. But don’t forget — this is a sustained, remote alpine trail for advanced riders, so be prepared with the proper clothes, food, water and bike.
MildeR FaReFor those new to mountain biking or just looking to cruise, a first pick
would be Centennial (2.7 km), offering a gentle, wide trail from the City of Rossland to the base of Red Mountain Resort. Connecting to the Centennial trail, Moe’s offers a beginner to intermediate fray into flow-ing single-track. Other milder options include the Railgrade and slightly more challenging Kootenay Columbia.

tWo ChilieS, PleaSeThere is an abundance of quality intermediate trails in
Rossland. To spice it up, my nearby favourites include Milky Way, Green door and Cemetery. Linked by Roger’s and starting near the old Mining School location, these trails can be ridden in any combination (up and down) for an after-noon feast.
For some fresh flow, a new network is being developed at the far end of the Blackjack Cross Country Ski area off Highway 3B. Don’t miss the new larch Ridge trail and the descents on BS and Monticola . It can be done as a loop if you ride up the forestry road after CoG to the highway.
FiRe in the hole!If you’re a seasoned rider looking for a challenge, Ross-
land won’t disappoint. There’s too much goodness to list, but here are a couple of my favourites:
For a challenging all-mountain rip, try climbing the new Red top up Red Mountain, and veering onto Redhead on the descent. Another great pedal is across drakes and doukhobor draw then up tamarack to the clas-sic Whiskey descent.

With spectacular views of the Selkirk

tree-lined classic.

LONG KNOWN for its world-class winter recre-ation, Rossland and area is quickly becoming a golf destination.
Located within the City of Rossland, Redstone is only a four-minute drive
from main street Columbia Ave. Secluded in a rich, tree-filled val-
ley, Redstone has its share of elevation changes, streams, ravines, deep bunkers and other hazards to navigate. Give these a wide berth and a good score is possible, however a big score is possible if you try to bite off more than you can chew.
The greens at Redstone are large and not overly contoured. Pay special attention to all angles while on the green — new visitors frequently see the wrong break when reading a putt.
Don’t forget your camera, Redstone is famous for postcard viewscapes on every tee box.
Another option just 10 minutes away from Redstone is the Rossland trail Country Club at Birchbank. Located above the Columbia River, golfers will appreciate its classic serenity and expansive, walkable fairways. Keep an eye out for mountain goats on the rock bluff across the river.
There are many other beautiful courses scat-tered throughout the region, stretching from Grand Forks and Christina Lake in the west, through to Castlegar and to Nelson and Bal-four in the east. It is simply a golfer’s paradise!
For an alternative to golf, try frisbee golf, or “Frolf.” The skillfully cut, 18-hole disc golf course located at the Black Jack Cross Coun-try Ski Club has superb views of Red Moun-
tain and the Rossland Range.
Glorious Golf
RoSSland Fun FaCt:> the Cominco Metals Company built the original nine hole course at Redstone in 1927 and also built the original clubhouse,
which is still in use today.

Rossland is the unofficial “Nomadic Entrepreneur Capital of Canada,” which means that there is a very high ratio of home-based businesses to residents.
Make your FIRST stop to Rossland to the Rossland Cham-ber of Commerce, a non-profit, membership-based society, offers our members advocacy on municipal, provincial and federal levels. There they can help you with information about the community and starting up a business in our area.
Members of the Rossland Chamber have access to a busi-ness service centre conveniently located downtown. Market-
ing, advertising and a connection to the community are just some of the benefits of membership. We at the Chamber welcome you to drop by for any information or assistance. Email us at [email protected] or find our members directory at www.rossland.com.
