• For most of it’s history, Rome practiced religious tolerance– As a result, there was great
religious diversity– Christianity emerges as one
of these many religions

King David of Israel– Born and raised a Jew,
practiced Judaism– Chose 12 apostles
(followers) to help spread his message and teachings

Jewish Messiah
– Viewed by some as a threat• Executed by crucifixion

rose from the dead– Following his death, they
began spreading his message• Paul especially important in
spreading the religion

• Rome became intolerant of Christianity– Saw as potential threat why?• Question of loyalty
– Many killed for their beliefs (martyrs)• But Christianity continued to
spread
