A Gull Lake couple were almost, but not quite fooled by a phone call made by someone pretending to be their grandson who said they need money in a hurry to get out of jail.
Catherine Ford said she got a phone call last Thursday morning from someone impersonating her grandson. The person said he had been in a car accident and had been charged with drunk driving.
The story was so believable, she said. He said he had been drinking at a venue with a buddy who was too drunk to drive. He said he had only had a couple of drinks so he figured he would be fine. But, as it turned out they were in an accident and he had been arrested for drunk driving.
The person on the phone, pretending to be the Fords grandson, said his lawyer would be contacting them.
In an email to the Review, Kirk Ford said a person, pre-tending to be their grandsons lawyer, Adam White, said he wanted an Interac card number.
Since I was unable to give him a number he graciously invited me to use Western Union and make a money trans-fer of $995 to a Mr. Richard Thomas located in West West-mount, Quebec. I was asked to tell Western Union that it was a personal amount for Mr. Thomas and not a business transaction. Apparently this was very important.
Gull Lake couple warn public to be aware of phone calls from
persons using false identity
Terry Fox Run: Braydan Marshall, Dylan Conners, Mitchell Mann, Hayden Motowylo, Ashlie Mounkes, Olivia Quaife, April Mann and Mara Reimer participated in the Terry Fox Run at Bluffton School. The school has received $3,500 so far, which is half of the money raised for cancer research through the run. Bluffton School had set a goal of raising $5,000 this year.

The attempt to dupe the couple out of the money was thwarted when the Fords, who had become suspicious of these demands, were able to contact their grandson by tele-phone at work.
Jesse was at work, said Catherine Ford. He was fine. The couple warns the public to be wary of phone calls
such as the one they received.Always phone the person, said Ford. If you cannot
get a phone number to call back, be suspicious. The Canadian Anti Fraud Center can be contacted at

September is kind of a bossy, flamboyant month.
Ive noticed that lately, as I try very hard to adhere to the timetable that seems to come along automatical-ly with the new calendar page.
Okay, I admit it. I have been feeling just a tad sorry for myself.
I wasnt quite ready for September because I hadnt quite finished with summer.
Summer kind of got away on me because of the book. The book was called The Magic of Organiza-tion and it was supposed to change my life.
I bought it because I keep thinking if I read enough of those books something will click and a new organized me that has been hiding inside my body
Ive had a lot of excel-lent experiences this sum-mer. I could likely write a fair amount on all my travels, laughs, and come-dic hiccups that I endured throughout the warm days of the June, July, and Au-gust.

Treena MielkeOn The Other Side
September days mean
back to routine
Lifes moments watched by a team of peopleIn and amongst all
the motorcycle miles that were accumulated, I found time to venture on a mid-summer camping mission. There were six of us in a conjoined site, just west of Trochu, in the river valley at the Tolman Bridge (east) Campground. My friends shared an important collec-tive realization during that weekend trip in July.
During the first night, once the sun had sufficient-ly set, our group was a little drunk and a little restless. It was decided that we all should go check out the river. We stood on the east-ern banks of the Red Deer River and looked up at the stars. Our attention was di-verted to a car that came to
the boat launch on the west bank.
The couple who came out of the car were oblivi-ous to our presence on the other side of the river and remained oblivious to us even after we all hoot-ed, howled, growled, and barked like mad dogs on the banks. When our cries went unnoticed, we stopped act-ing like wild animals.
The couple stood close to one another and seemed to be entranced with the night sky. Someone from my group quietly spoke, it looks like they are having one of those life moments.
Our group seemed to know that the couple were in a moment that would become (for them) a cher-
ished memory of an eve-ning spent gazing into the sky. Our group has been a group since the dawn of time: the majority of us have been friends since elementary school. We all have had our share of lifes moments together the ones that fall under the cat-egory of unforgettable in-stances in life.
Another person in our group spoke while we simply stood on the banks watching the people on the other side: life moments, watched by a team of peo-ple. It sounded like a slo-gan. Our group had a col-lective epiphany. We began to converse over the strange realization that some of our groups scared moments
may have been silently ob-served from a distance, just like how we were all wit-nessing a couple have their own moment. Our group was jarred at the notion that the memories we mutual-ly experienced may share ownership with outsiders.
We left the banks of the river and returned to the campsite. The rest of our evening was spent string-ing together fragments of philosophical knowledge. My group felt like we had been an sideshow audience to the couple on the oth-er side of river but for all we knew some group could have been watching us while we sat around the fire deliberating and con-templating.
for many years will emerge.Common sense tells
me you cant get organized from a book anymore than you can jump into the deep end of the pool just by read-ing about it, but me and common sense are usually at odds anyway.
So I bought the book, sighed deeply and began reading, waiting, in a most impractical way, for the magic to begin.
It didnt.About the same time as
I bought the book, a friend who, for some reason, knows about such things told me if I just started with one shelf or one cupboard or one corner, I could have my whole entire house clean and organized.
When? I said all meek and compliant.
One day, my unhelp-ful friend said.
And so it began. One shelf in my pantry.
And then another. Before I knew it I be-
came obsessed. Clean, clean, clean. Look at me go!
My self-imposed clean-ing frenzy lasted through-out the summer. I have to say I went through every closet, every cupboard, ev-ery bathroom and even the laundry room for heaven sakes, did not escape my ruthless attack.
But, as I purged and cleaned, summer with all its magic, charm and de-lightful green and blue sun drenched days, disap-peared.
Wow! That was fast. Oh well, my efforts have paid off and my house is so neat and organized, I almost feel like someone else lives in it. I dare not question myself as to how long it will last, but right now am enjoying the satisfaction of opening a closet and staring at neat-ly folded towel and sheets.
Its a miracle, actually!Anyway, now we are on
to September. People are saying its time to get back to a routine.
Its time to get back to lessons and classes and get-ting all fit and self-improv-ing whatever self improve-ment thing needs work.
Waiting in a line up at the grocery store, I grabbed one of those magazines
whose front cover flaunted something about being all fit and looking at least 20 years younger than your real age.
Once again common sense perched its little voice on my shoulder and said, you cant read about it and make it happen, you dummy.
I guiltily dropped the magazine in my cart any-way, hiding the unhealthy choices like nachos and cookies and smiled sweetly at the check out girl.
But, whatever, Im ready. I know all about verbs as opposed to nouns.
Action. Take action! Its the only way to make things happen.
So, Im back at the gym, working at working out, and being all glad when Im done. And my wonder-ful, sweet and very patient piano teacher has agreed to take me on for yet anoth-
er year, coaching and en-couraging me as I stumble through yet another book, hopefully one level higher.
And, for some reason, Im all happy.
Every morning and ev-ery night when I drive to and from work September blesses me with a delight-ful kaleidoscope of colours that takes my breath away.
My little grandson just began Grade 1, leaving the cocoon of moms kitchen and chocolate chip cookies for a bigger world. He is somewhat tired, bewildered and missing his brothers, his Lego and his favorite TV shows.
I think about him as I drive through the glorious golden September days.
Its just the start of an-other adventure, I muse to myself. For you and for me!
And its good. Its all good!

Dear Editor,Hello, combine driver!Do you not see the line of traffic behind
you? Do you not see the aggravated drivers pulling into the other lane to see if it's safe to pass? Do you not see them tailgating and honking at you because they are in a hurry to get somewhere?
Do you not see that they pass you in frustration even when there is on coming traffic, which puts everyone in danger?
You must have more patience then me, because if I were you, I would have swerved into the vehicles passing me and maybe knock some sense into their empty heads! Actually I know for a fact you have more patience than me because I can barely drive three hours on the highway without almost losing my mind, let alone drive in circles for 12 plus hours.
Do they not realize that you are on the highway to get to work? That you have a tighter deadline then they do? They could have left 15 minutes early today, while you, combine driver, probably didn't get home until 1a.m. and you were probably up by 5 a.m. to get your next field finished. So thank you combine driver, for having the
most patience in the world. For putting food into the hands of peo-
ple who can't even give you the time of day to wave as they pass you in a safe manner. For feeding those who couldn't even follow calmly and safely behind you for an extra three minutes as you pulled into your next field. Thank you for risking the life of your little one who sits in the seat beside you as they learn how to become the next genera-tion farmer. I saw your signal light was on as you wanted to turn left into your field, I saw that you safely looked in your mirror before turning to see that there was a semi who was in too much of a hurry to notice your signal light was on.
If you hadn't looked to see if someone was passing you before you turned, that semi would have hit you. It would have hit your little one first. It's harvest season, peo-ple.
For only a few more weeks there's going to be farmers driving their equipment on the roads to get to work. Give them the respect they deserve, and a little extra space on the roads so everyone can get to where they are going safely.
Carolyne Krans
Combine drivers deserve respect when on roads

Dear Editor,
Re: Helping Hands Building
Reading in the Rimbey Review I noticed that the building, which the Helping Hands were using, has also been referred to as the Old Scout Hall.
There was also refer-ence to not having any his-torical funds to
preserve this old build-ing.
However, would it not be better to spend two dol-lars of taxpayers money to retain a community asset rather than one dollar of taxpayers money to dis-pose of that asset?
The history of this building dates back to be-fore 1924. In 1924 there is a record of this building be-ing used as an intermediate schoolroom in Rimbey.
In 1924 the Rimbey School Board of Trustees having raised by
means of debentures the sum of $20,000 started the building of a much-need-ed new school making this building available for other uses.
Kitchener Lodge #95 which is the Masonic Lodge
located in Rimbey, in-quired of the School Trust-ees the opportunity to pur-chase this building for a Rimbey Masonic Lodge.
History of old Scout Hall dates back to early 20s
Jimsonweed, also com-monly known as Devils Trumpet, has recently been discovered in a number of canola crops within La-combe County. This plants seed, similar in size to cano-la seed, is prohibited under the federal weed seed order and is not allowed into Can-ada.
Please be vigilant for this tall and showy weed. Report any suspected sight-ings to Dion Burlock, Agri-cultural Fieldman at (403) 782-8959 or [email protected]
Musicians entertain: The Tattletale Saints, New Zealand-born vocalist, guitarist, songwriter y Winstanley and vocalist, double bassist Vanessa McGowan entertained at the Beatty Heritage House on Saturday, Sept. 19 to a full house. The musicians provided a delightful evening of musical entertainment.

The Masonic Lodge in Rimbey purchased this building for the $350.00. Brother Francis Robert Symonds gifted to the Lodge Lot 5 Block A, Plan 1962C.J which is located at the south west corner of the Lions Park where the skate park is now being built.
Several of the contrac-tors from Edmonton who were in Rimbey
building the new School were Masons and agreed to assist the local Masons in building a foundation of first class brick and tile upon which to place this new lodge hall.
The old school building, now a new Masonic Lodge Hall was
successfully moved to this lot November 29, 1924.
The building was made ready and the first Masonic meeting in this new lodge was April 06, 1925. This was to be the Rimbey
Masonic Lodge Hall until December 10, 1963 when the Masons moved into the Legion Hall.
During the time that
the Masons retained this building and a Chapter of the Eastern Star used it and the Anglican Church used it as a Sunday School for the children.
On October 13, 1964 the building was leased to the Union College. On June 14, 1966 the building was sold to The Boy Scouts for $300.00 to be moved and the lot cleaned up.
The building was subse-quently moved to the north-west corner of the same property, a basement put under it, and it has become the old Scout hall and most recently, the building that housed Helping Hands.
In short, records show the building was built prior to 1924 and went from an intermediate schoolroom to Masonic Lodge Hall to a Scout Hall and to a Helping Hands facility. At all times it served Rimbey residents within the Rimbey village and town.W.Brother Allan Tarleton,

Former Premier Ralph Klein once spoke of an Alber-ta so fundamentally strong, with such a prosperous econ-omy, that it often appeared government was on autopilot.
These words were often used to ridicule the four-term premier, citing a perceived lack of vision for Alberta. I believe history will give Pre-mier Klein the benefit of the doubt. His government elim-inated a $3.2 billion deficit and paid down $23 billion in debt, making Alberta the most prosperous jurisdiction in North America.
Autopilot may be a useful tool when youre flying high,
Chili cook off: Tanya Hatala from Servus Credit Union serves chili to students Damen Balan, Leila Tolentine, Reed Toussaint, Kaden Toussaint during the chili cook off held Sept. 18 at Pas Ka Poo Park. The students choice for the best chili went to Keyera Gas Plant. Best choice among the adults went to The Cutting Corner. Funds raised from the chili cook off will go to elementary school improvements.

Government on autopilot says MLA Nixon
but it is not meant to replace a pilot altogether; certainly not when there are storm clouds on the horizon.
If the Alberta Govern-ments 1st Quarter Fiscal Update is any indication, a full-blown hurricane has arrived.
According to the update, the governments consolidat-ed deficit is poised to reach $9.1 billion. The NDP is increasing total spending to a record $50.2 billion, and increasing our provinces debt by 50 per cent to $18.3 billion.
With this crisis reaching a boiling point, one would expect the government to be taking clear steps to address the situation.
Unfortunately, all indi-cations are this government remains on autopilot. A firm date for the introduction of the provincial budget has not been set. Rather, members of the government have opted to take the summer off, allowing them to campaign with their federal NDP counterparts. For instance, Jobs Minister Lori Sigurdson was in BC campaigning for Tom Mul-cair at a time when mass lay-offs have spiked Albertas unemployment.
Its not just this gov-
ernments disregard for the economy that is worrisome. While the NDP siesta con-tinues, important day-to-day business is being ignored.
In August, the gov-ernment nearly blew off a delegation of leading U.S. policy makers, who travelled to Alberta to tour oilsands operations near Fort McMur-ray. Only after the Official Opposition offered to host the delegation did the gov-ernment send Environment Minister Shannon Phillips.
Meanwhile, the gov-ernment is ignoring basic transparency rules. Under a Treasury Board directive issue last fall, the govern-ment must disclose details regarding certain sole-source contracts on a quarterly basis. The NDP has yet to comply with this directive, which is particularly concerning to me in my role as Official Opposi-tion Shadow Minister for De-mocracy and Accountability.
When it comes to ad-dressing the economic cri-sis, as well as the day-to-day business of government, our Official Opposition stands ready to help.
Its time to get to work for all Albertans.
Step one: Turn off the autopilot.

ple from Sylvan Lake and Red Deer as well as those in the rural area.
Calkins does not be-lieve the country is in a recession.
This (time) will be remembered as the reces-sion that wasnt a reces-sion, he said.
He noted the forecast for jobs is good, noting that a re-elected Conserva-tive government will aim to create 1.3 million new jobs by 2020.
He said a balanced budget, low taxes across the board and a single seniors tax credit to be introduced by the Conser-vatives clearly show the Party has a handle on the countrys financial picture.
The numbers should speak for themselves, he said. We are the envy of our peer countries.
Calkins noted the situ-ation in the Middle East is cause for concern not only among his constituents, but for all Canadians.
It is a sensitive issue, he said.
Keeping Canadians safe from the threat of terrorism and protect-ing vulnerable minorities overseas are a priority of the Harper government, he said.
Ongoing efforts of the Party include creating banned travel zones in terrorist-controlled parts of the world to stop for-eign fighters who return to Canada after launching terrorist attacks. Assisting victims of ISIS in Iraq and Syria by providing hu-manitarian aid and refugee assistance is also part of the governments plan, he said.

In keeping with police and peace officers national me-morial day the town of Rimbey flew its flags at half mast on Sept. 27.
On the last Sunday in September, police and peace offi-cers national memorial day, flags on the Legislature Build-ing, McDougla Centre and all Provincial court houses and correctional institutions are lowered to half-mast from sun-rise to sunset in honour of fallen Canadian police and peace officers.
Acting CAO Donna Tona said Sept. 27 is a day which has been set aside provincially to honor peace officers and RCMP in such a way.
It is out of respect for our relationships with the RCMP and our peace officers, she said. It is the right thing to do and it is important we honour them in such a way.
Peace officers in Rimbey are Sgt. Kyle Koller and resi-dent community peace officer Jay Klause.

KEYERA RIMBEY GAS GATHERING SYSTEM EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN The Pipeline System: The KEYERA Rimbey / Gilby / Medicine River Gas Gathering System falls within Townships 44-37 and Ranges 26 W4M to 4 W5M in Clearwater, Lacombe and Ponoka Counties. It transports sour gas, condensate, high vapour pressure and natural gas liquids and the largest Emergency Planning Zone is 2.48 km.
The Company: Headquartered in Calgary with operations in Alberta and B.C., KEYERA operates one of the largest natural gas midstream businesses in Canada. Our three business lines are: natural gas gathering and processing; natural gas liquids (NGLs) processing, transportation and storage; and NGL and crude oil marketing.
Corporate Responsibility: At KEYERA we view corporate responsibility as being a natural combination of economic growth, environmental protection and social responsibility. All KEYERA facilities have a long history of safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible operations, which have been maintained and upgraded to ensure their continued integrity. In the event of an emergency KEYERA maintains effective emergency response procedures, trains employees in their use and conducts simulated emergencies to test the effectiveness of their plans.
Public Protection Measures: KEYERA has a pipeline in close proximity to your community and as a proactive measure, has developed a detailed emergency response plan to ensure your health and safety. The following points highlight some information you should be aware of as a resident in the area:
Evacuation Procedures: In the unlikely event of a release from the pipeline, it may be necessary to evacuate you to ensure your safety. You will be contacted by emergency response personnel to apprise you of the situation. If there is no answer to our calls, we will proceed to your residence to ensure you are informed of the emergency. The following steps should be taken if evacuation procedures have been implemented: x Gather all residents and bring any medicines required x Tightly close all windows and doors x Turn down thermostat and shut off any air exchange fans to outside x Drive safely on the route provided and proceed directly to the evacuation centre and check in with the Keyera
representative x Wait for further instruction
Shelter-In-Place Procedures: Shelter-in-place is considered the primary public safety measure when the hazard is of a limited duration or the public would be at a higher risk if evacuated. The goal of shelter-in-place is to reduce the movement of air into and out of a building until either the hazard has passed or other emergency actions are taken (such as evacuation). If you are instructed to stay in your residence, do not leave your house or attempt to start any vehicles until emergency response personnel advises you that it is safe to do so.
Ignition Procedures: If the On-Site Supervisor determines that ignition is required, they are fully authorized to ignite the release at the pipeline, facility or terminal. Ignition of the gas source would ensure your safety if evacuation was not practical.
KEYERA has prepared a public information package outlining their operations in the area and detailing the public safety measures. If you have any questions or would like a copy of the package, please contact Des Hemeon, Corporate Emergency Response Coordinator, collect at 780-449-7803. For more information about KEYERA and its facilities, please visit our website at www.keyera.com.

Rimbey Christian School has two new faces on staff this year.
Leesha Tiemstra is the homeroom teacher for grades eight and nine.
Tiemstra, who graduated from the Uni-versity of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Social Science and a Bachelor of Educa-tion taught for six months in Lethbridge previously.
The new teacher graduated from Cen-tral Alberta Christian High School in La-combe and is presently commuting from Lacombe to Rimbey.
She is pleased to be teaching at the Christian School.
I am enjoying teaching junior high,
she said. Also new to the staff this year is Fiona
Doige who is teaching the Kindergarten and Grade 1 class.
Prior to becoming a teacher Doige worked with children with special needs.
My work with these children affirmed that I should pursue teaching as a career, she said.
Doige enjoys spending time outdoors. She also loves to read, play the piano and paint and would like to illustrate chil-drens storybooks in the future. She also wants to continue to learn American Sign Language.
I am looking forward to getting to know the people of Rimbey, she said.

Rimbey town council has turned down a local musician/songwriters re-quest for funding to pay for costs associated with recording a song for the In-nocence Lost Foundation.
Debbie Bergeron wrote the song When Innocence is Lost and has been asked to debut the piece at an event entitled Trading a Gun for a Guitar in Van-couver on Oct. 10.
The cost of recording and flight ticket prices is $1,276.
In a letter to council, Bergeron said the Inno-cence Lost Foundation is building a community centre in Kabala, Sierra Leone, West Africa. One of the founders of the foun-dation was a child soldier during the countrys civil war and knows the healing needed from such an expe-rience.
I am realizing that the world is not so big, said Bergeron. I never imag-ined that Id meet a former child soldier and learn the devastation that such a cru-el childhood would bring
and that I would be able to write words that would help to make changes in other peoples lives.
Council agreed to en-courage Bergeron to go through an online organi-zation such as GoFundMe to raise funds.
They also agreed to invite the musician to showcase her talents at a town-sponsored event such as the Christmas party.
Mayor Pankiw noted that financially supporting the singer would be setting precedence for other simi-lar funding requests.
Leesha Tiemstra is the homeroom teacher for grades eight and nine at the Rimbey Christian School.

NDP candidate Doug Hart
Liberal candidate Jeff Rock
BY TREENA MIELKE
The economy and jobs are on the minds of Alber-tans as the federal election looms closer, says NDP candidate Doug Hart.
Hart said it is unfortu-nate that 70 per cent of Al-bertas exports are from the oil and gas industry.
Alberta is hitching its economic wagon to a single source economy, he said. Agriculture has been for-gotten about.
Hart said other coun-tries have no confidence in Canadas economy thanks to the Conservative gov-ernment which has expe-rienced one scandal after another.
Our dollar has dropped to 75 cents, the biggest sin-gle drop ever, he said.
Hart suggests diplomat-ic solutions to dealing with issues in the Middle East as opposed to using guns and missiles.
Hart said Albertans are
still recovering from the provincial election and not enthused about the federal race.
Its slow, but it has picked up momentum.
Hart has an extensive background in profession-al and civic activities. He has represented the Civil Service Association of Al-berta, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, the United Nurses of Alberta, the College and Associa-tion of Registered Nurses of Alberta, and Alberta As-sociation of Colleges and Technical Institutes.
He has also served on many provincial and federal governance boards includ-ing The Yellowhead Re-gional Educational Consor-tium, The Alberta Council on Admissions and Trans-fers, Alberta North, Red Deer College, and Grande Prairie Regional College. Hart was a recipient of the Premiers Centennial Med-al of Excellence in 2005.
BY TREENA MIELKE
26 days --- but whose counting? This is what Liberal candidate Jeff Rock said last
Wednesday in a telephone interview from his Red Deer of-fice.
Rock, who is on leave from his job as minister of a church in the city, said he is having a lot of fun.
Its going really well, he said. The response has been great.
Overall, the first time Liberal candidate said people are worried about their jobs and want to see a new direction in government.
They are pretty worried about the economy, he said. I know its a long shot to be a Liberal candidate in Alberta, but I am cautiously optimistic.
Rock has served as the board chair of the Central Al-berta AIDS Network Society and has been a member of the City of Red Deer's Downtown Redevelopment Plan Com-mittee. He is the founding chair of the Red Deer Interfaith Network.
Rock holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Divinity from McGill University in Montreal. He is an Ordained Minister in The United Church of Canada.
Rock will be in Rimbey on Oct. 2 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Empress Theatre Emporium for coffee and con-versation. He will be at the Cross Eyed Giraffe Cafe in Bentley from 3 to 4 p.m.
For more information please call 403-986-1225.
Liberal candidate
ready to meet challenges of election campaign
Hart ready to defend NDP banner
Hart has been a provincial NDP candidate during several campaigns and is well known in Cen-tral Alberta. In the 2015
Provincial election, he gar-nered more than 30 per cent of the popular vote in La-combe Ponoka, finishing a close second.
