Richmond upon Thames lies 15 miles southwest of central London yet a fast train form Waterloo Station will take you here in 15 minutes. When you arrive you will emerge into a different world.
Defi ned by the Thames with over 21 miles of riverside we are without doubt the most beautiful of the capitals 32 boroughs. It is with good reason that we are known as London’s Arcadia.
We really have something for everyone. Our towns are vibrant and stylish with great places to eat, shop, drink and generally have a good time. Our parks and open spaces are internationally renowned and we have other world-class destinations such as Hampton Court Palace and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew which this year celebrates its 250th anniversary. The London Wetland Centre
in Barnes is an oasis of peace and a haven for wildlife close to the heart of the capital while Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby has a fantastic visitors centre which is open all year round.
I am extremely honoured to be Leader of this beautiful borough. Our aim at the Town Hall is to preserve and improve it for everyone. Top of our agenda is protecting the environment and fi ghting climate change. Through our various policies we are setting an example of what local government can do nationally to ensure a greener and more sustainable future.
I extend our warmest welcome and hope you will enjoy your visit.

Whether truly royal or simply regal, Richmond upon Thames is a treasure trove of stunning architecture steeped in history. While Hampton Court Palace,
the renowned playground of King Henry VIII, and its glorious grounds and mind-boggling outdoor maze are a sight not-to-be-missed, the borough is also home to hidden gems of history. Nearby attractions such as Osterley Park, Chiswick House, York House and Syon House, as well as recently-restored Kew Palace, will provide days of fun and learning. From Ham House, a 500-year-old Stuart House on the banks of the Thames, brimming
historic gems
with 17th-century charm (and, it’s reported, a few ghosts) to Marble Hill House, a magnifi cent gift from King George II to his clever mistress, Henrietta Howard, there
is no lack of history and intrigue to be found. So satisfy the history buff in you (or your family) with regal sights that don’t have a royal price tag.

Of London’s many treasures, there is possibly none that compares with the jewelled crown of the sparkling River Thames. Long the subject of many a song, poem and
painting, the celebrated waterway snakes through the city, the backdrop for snatches of pastoral peacefulness tucked away into the bustle of city life.In Richmond upon Thames, home of royal Thames residences and a plethora of riverside restaurants, pubs, shops and luxury homes, the river never fails to supply hours of enjoyment for any who venture to its banks. The borough boasts many riverside towpaths, perfect for a quiet evening walk, and taking a row
down the river is as easy as renting a skiff at one of the many venues in Richmond itself, Marble Hill and Hampton Court. So whether you’re looking for scenery, sumptuous
food or just a beautiful backdrop for an evening out, there’s no better place to be than Richmond’s Thames riversides. For more information about the river please go towww.thames-landscape-strategy.org.uk

And a shipwright Turk was Lord Mayor of London in 1230, long before Dick Whittington made his famous journey.

World-renowned Royal Parks, stunning stretches of riverside and pristine village greens combine to make Richmond upon Thames the greenest and most beautiful borough in London.
The jewel in the crown is majestic Richmond Park, with its gently rolling hills, ancient copses and herds of free-roaming deer, little changed from the days of CharlesI. But all around the borough are echoes of England’s rich heritage, from Chestnut Avenue in Bushy Park, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, to the sounds of leather on willow on the cricket greens of Richmond, Twickenham and Kew.
The borough’s parks are the
safest in London and are currently benefi ting from a massive investment programme under which 38 children’s play areas have been refurbished.
Richmond upon Thames is the
only London borough to span both banks of the Thames. Nature abounds, with Barnes Common and the Ham Lands rich in wildlife and fl ora, and ripe for exploration..

“ Richmond upon Thames is a great venue for eating out with family and friends.” Sid McNally.
If you’re looking for a quiet drink with views of the River Thames or a more lively setting for a fantastic meal out, Richmond upon Thames has a variety of pubs and restaurants to suit.
For traditional pub grub, try the Barmy Arms and White Swan on Twickenham Riverside; or The Roebuck on Richmond Hill and The Sun Inn in Barnes. For the more contemporary, try Tootsies in Richmond, Arthurs on Twickenham Green or The Naked Turtle in East Sheen offering live jazz while you eat.
The Original Maids of Honour tearooms in Kew (opposite Kew Gardens) offer delicious cakes
and teas. Or, if you’re visiting Hampton Court, why not cross the road to the Mitre Hotel or Blubeckers for lunch. Mamma Mia in East Sheen offers wonderful Italian food and the Petersham

Remembering the past becomes a fascinating experience in Richmond upon Thames. A visit to the Poppy Factory in Petersham Road will take you behind the scenes of an operation that produces 38 million remembrance poppies a year in honour and
memory of the country’s service men and women, complete with a guided tour and tea and biscuits. The borough’s military history can also be explored in its cemeteries, the fi nal resting place for seven Victoria Cross holders. Explorers themselves rest in Richmond’s burial grounds – including Sir Richard Burton, whose grave is accompanied by a sculpted
tomb in the shape of an Arab tent, who lies in the cemetery of the Church of St. Mary Magdalen in North Worple Way – and the area’s rich heritage of sport is not missed out either. The grave of Ebenezer Cobb Morley, founder and fi rst secretary of the Football
Association, lies quietly hidden in Barnes. Even beyond the former glory of their inhabitants, the borough’s cemeteries offer pastoral surroundings and a peaceful getaway, and a stop in won’t leave you disappointed.

accommodation info
When you are looking for a place to stay, you need a rating system you can trust. The Quality in Tourism (QiT) ratings are your clear guide to what to expect, in an easy-to-understand form. Properties are visited annually by trained, impartial assessors so you can have confi dence that your accommodation has been thoroughly checked and rated for quality before you make a booking.
Hotels are given a rating from one to fi ve stars - the more stars, the higher the quality and the greater the range of facilities and level of services provided.
Guest accommodation, which includes guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, inns and farmhouses, is rated from one to fi ve diamonds and stars. The same minimum requirements for facilities and services apply to all guest accommodation from one to fi ve diamonds. Progressively higher levels of quality and customer care must be provided for each of the one to fi ve diamond ratings.
Self-catering establishments are rated from one to fi ve stars. The more stars awarded to an establishment, the higher levels of quality you can expect. Establishments at higher rating levels also have to meet some additional requirements for facilities. Quality in Tourism ratings are your sign of quality assurance, giving you the confi dence
