The American Civil War
(dating from 1861 to 1865)
wasnt just about four years of
battle. The before and after also
shaped our nation.
Please join us on Saturday,
November 10, when LorraineMcConahy, public historian
from the Museum of History
and Industry, returns to further
explore that legacy. She last
shared her Civil War knowledge
with us in January 2011.
Lorraine has deepened her
study of the period now that she
is curating the upcoming Civil
War exhibition for Washington
State Historical Society.
Shell also speak about
the statewide Civil War Read-
In, and extend an invitation
to join with hundreds of other
Washingtonians to research our
territorys hidden Civil War.

William White fought for the Union in the Ohio
Volunteer Infantry. He later practiced law in his
hometown of Wellsburg, West Virginia, but then leftfor Washington State in 1871. In 1885, President
Grover Cleveland named him a State Supreme
Court Justice. He settled in Redmond, married
Emma McRedmond, and they built the Redmond
Hotel in 1889. Now known as the Justice White
House, it still stands on Leary and NE 76th Street.

celebraTiNG lois PhilliPs huDsoN
The late Redmond resident,University of Washington professor
and noted authorLois Phillips
Hudson has been honored as the
first writer celebrated by a nationwide
effort to preserve and promote
Americas rich history of rural
literature.The Rural Lit RALLY
organiers have set up a website at
loisphillipshudson.or/wordpress/
that focuses on Lois work and where
fans can discuss her legacy.
The initiative also contacted the Redmond Historical Society for
information about Lois, author ofTh Bns Pnty, and that led to an
exhibit this December at the Redmond Library and one or two other local
sites yet to be determined.
We hope these exhibits will bring attention to Dr. Hudsons work,
says Cynthia Anthony, a Rural Lit RALLY volunteer and special
assstant to the dean of educaton at Buffalo State College. Folks are
also invited to share their thoughts on her literary accomplishments, her
environmental activism, and/or any personal memories that they may
have of Lois Phillips Hudson on the website, Anthony says.
The group was unable to interview Lois before she passed away
in 2011, Anthony adds, but we were able to establish an excellent
relationship with Lois daughter Lucy, which led to Rural Lit RALLY being
selected to receive Dr. Hudsons papers.
ruralliT rallyThe idea for the initiative came from Paul Theobald (then dean of
educaton at Buffalo State College) and frends n a farmhouse n Oho!
Theobald actually met Lois and they had periodic chats. Lean more about
the initiative is online at rurallitrally.or.
