Don Hutchens, a member of OneWorld’s Board of Directors, first heard about the organization in 1993 through his work at OPPD. The Indian-Chicano Health Center, as OneWorld was known at the time, was seeking board members, and Hutchens was intrigued.

24 years later, Hutchens has started his 19th non-consecutive year as a OneWorld board member. Hutchens continues to devote his time, talents and financial support to the organization after all this time because of his commitment to the mission.

“Providing quality health care not only improves the quality of life for the individual, but also for their immediate family, and ultimately, their community,” he said. “At

OneWorld, it is demonstrated daily that the commitment to wellness has a positive rippling effect across an entire community.”

Though Hutchens helps guide OneWorld through big decisions with his work on the board, he is not far removed from the day-to-day operations of the organization. He is a proud OneWorld patient, and his own family has been “directly and positively” impacted by care offered at OneWorld.

“Our daughter found herself pregnant, single and underinsured at the age of 26,” he said. “I knew instantly that OneWorld would be able to provide her with high-quality and affordable prenatal, delivery and

well-baby care…Her pregnancy resulted in our first grandchild who has just turned 6 years old. I can’t look at him without being grateful for OneWorld and its dedicated staff.”

After 24 years of involvement, Hutchens’ support for OneWorld has only increased, and he looks forward to many more years of serving the community with the new strategic plan as a guide.

“I’ve been fortunate to see OneWorld grow through the years, and I’ve been fortunate to see results,” he said. “I think it’s so important for the community that we continue on that mission.”

CEO REPORT

As we look back on a year filled with acts of kindness for our patients, we celebrate these successes. In 2016, OneWorld expanded to Sarpy County with a new clinic in Bellevue. Our new and innovative Teen and Young Adult Health Center in South Omaha helped us broaden our focus on underserved populations. In total,

we cared for 37,771 unique patients from 70 zip codes at our 12 clinics. Of those patients, 60% lived below the 100% poverty line, 83% were racial and ethnic

minorities, 49% were uninsured and 40% were children. A new cataract surgery program for uninsured patients, a mobile mammogram program

for baseline mammograms for uninsured women, a new partnership with Creighton University’s psychiatry students and new transportation vehicles increased our capacity as the health care home for the most vulnerable among us. Continuously, we strive to address unmet needs, improve our services and enhance the patient experience. This year, we launched the AIDET model of customer service, increased our use of the patient portal for convenient test results and began using technology to gather real-time patient feedback. Our patients are our top priority, and we are committed to welcoming them and helping them access top-quality health care regardless of income, insurance status, immigration status or other circumstances. Our efforts are not unnoticed; last year, OneWorld ranked in the top 2% in the nation for health outcomes among the nation’s 1,400+ community health centers. We plan to continue to improve our services, starting by expanding dental care and establishing urgent medical and dental care at our Northwest Omaha clinic in 2017. We will also initiate a new legal partnership and grow our role in the community-wide Adolescent Health Project, which is focused on STD/STI rates and pregnancy prevention among young people ages 15-24. Our new strategic plan outlines our goals through 2020 as we continue to provide culturally respectful, quality health care with special attention to the underserved.

All are welcome at OneWorld. Todos son bienvenidos en OneWorld.

Kindness in new clinics: OneWorld Bellevue, Teen and Young Adult Health Center enjoy successful first years

OneWorld Bellevue and OneWorld’s Teen and Young Adult Health Center opened their doors to the public in early 2016. With these two expansions, OneWorld’s reach expanded to Sarpy County and to Omaha-area young people ages 15 to 24. Teens and young adults

discovered that the Center is a place where they feel comfortable receiving care, thanks to the staff’s efforts to treat patients with kindness and respect.

“One patient had been having a lot of problems with handling school, and he had been depressed for a really long time, so he met with me,” Amy Lacroix, M.D.,

a physician at the teen clinic, said. “We talked about different ways to manage his depression and anxiety. He and his mother left happy with the visit. They both

said they felt it was a really nice place; they felt very welcome, and they were glad we had so much time to spend with them.”

During OneWorld Bellevue’s first year of operation, the clinic met the needs of patients who spoke 10 different languages and who didn’t have medical homes. 78% of the patients seen in Bellevue lived at or below the 200% poverty line, and 60% were uninsured. Clinicians’ care ranged from childhood immunizations to chronic diseases such as diabetes, depression and significant tooth decay.

“My 8-year-old niece had a bad toothache,” Kent Au wrote in a thank-you email. “She could not eat, sleep or study…I took her to OneWorld in Bellevue. Dr. Penly and his crew did a wonderful job of calming down my niece, and they completed the treatment. They did such a nice job that my niece asked us to take her to see

Dr. Penly whenever she had any dental problems.”

Whether patients visited our established clinics or our newest locations in 2016, they left appointments assured that they would receive consistent, quality care at OneWorld.

Kindness on the go: Care Mobile provides a new smile and ‘a new lease on life’

Juanita Jenison, a fifth-grade teacher at Bellaire Elementary in Bellevue, saw firsthand how dental care from OneWorld’s Care Mobile can make a difference for a child. One of Jenison’s students had a chip on his front tooth. This child, she said, moved frequently,

had spent time in homeless shelters and couldn’t remember the last time he had seen a dentist. Jenison asked him if he wanted his tooth fixed, and she received emphatic “yes,” so

she attained parent permission and helped him make an appointment.

“He returned to class waving a bag, literally dancing and smiling from ear to ear,” Jenison said. “He showed me his new toothbrush and floss, and he

proudly announced that he could take them home. He showed me that his teeth had been cleaned, and he shared that the chip would be fixed.”

Though the dentist told him the team would also have to pull two other teeth that were causing problems, the student was “not worried one bit.” He couldn’t wait for his next appointment.

“I have never known a child to be this excited for much of anything, let alone a dental visit and dental work,” Jenison said. “I will remember this student forever now—the look

on his face, his smile, that attitude and his joy that the dentists would clean and fix his teeth. I can’t wait for when he comes back from that appointment

to dance for me with a fixed front tooth and a new lease on life.”

Through partnerships with Omaha’s Ronald McDonald House, area foundations and schools, the Care Mobile celebrated 10 years and many miles of smiles in 2016. Every year, more than 750 low-income children are treated through 1,400 Care Mobile visits.

Kindness after hours: OneWorld employees go above and beyond after patient’s house fire When Norma Valle, a Social Assistance Worker at OneWorld, learned that a house fire had claimed everything belonging to a patient’s family just before the holidays, she sprang

into action.

Valle first tried to help the family of seven (Mom, Dad, a 17-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl, twin 3-year-old boys and an unborn baby) through the process of finding community resources. She

called several organizations asking for help, but she was disappointed with the lack of response.

“It seemed like finding resources would take quite a bit of time, and they had been sleeping on the floor for two weeks,” she said.

Soon, Valle realized that, even with community resources, the family would need additional help to make ends meet. They needed everything from clothes and shoes to kitchen items and furniture. Valle sent an email to all OneWorld employees describing the situation and listing the family’s needs. Within a few days, she had “tons of emails” from employees reaching out with offers to help.

“I was amazed at the response,” Valle said. “OneWorld not only takes care of their patients as patients, but also as individuals out in the community.”

Donated items like clothes, kitchen items, toiletries and toys started filling Valle’s office space. After learning that the family was sleeping on the floor, an employee’s family even donated five beds.

For weeks after the fire, Valle enlisted volunteers and delivered carloads of donated items to the family, and the family also came to pick up donations at the Livestock Exchange Building campus. The family had a long road ahead of them, but with the help of donations from OneWorld staff members, they were able to begin the process of recovery.
