Composite Classes Parents are often asking about composite classes at a school, and many parents have their opinions on them.
For schools, forming classes is a logistical issue. We have a certain number of students and the Department provides a certain number of teachers for that number. We then have to form classes to these parameters. With lower class sizes in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 and larger class sizes in Years 3 to 6.
In 2017 we will have a 1/2 class and a 4/5 class. The remaining twelve classes will be a straight year class. All of our classes are mixed ability, there is no streaming of classes in any way. The 1/2 class will be teaching the same stage one outcomes to all students, the 4/5 class will have some students working towards stage two outcomes and some working towards stage three outcomes. If you think about students in any classroom, there will be students working towards, at and above stage outcomes. This is no different in a composite classroom, and teachers work hard in differentiating the curriculum for all our students.
Research is strong on the area that it is the quality of the teacher that makes the difference in a student’s learning. Apart from what each student brings to the table (previous experiences, home situation etc), the teacher is the next biggest influence on success. Class sizes, structure, team teaching etc all have minimal impact on learning. Research also says that students in composites are no worse or no better off than students in straight grade classes. At Maroubra Bay PS, we have worked hard to ensure that the teacher out the front of all our classes is the very best, and will continue to work with all our staff throughout the year.
I am happy to discuss further any questions parents may have on class formations.
Further details on classes for 2017 will be in next weeks newsletter. Stay tuned.
Spanish Languages Feedback from the community has indicated a strong desire to incorporate a language program into the school timetable.
Starting in 2017, we will be offering two opportunities for students to undertake language studies in Spanish.
In Years 1 to 4, students will be able to submit an expression of interest to participate in a weekly language lesson during class time. This program is linked to the Spanish language program offered here after school for native speakers in 2017. For students in Years 5 and 6, they will ALL receive a weekly Spanish lesson in their classroom from the language teacher at South Sydney HS.
These are exciting initiatives at Maroubra Bay PS and we hope that parents are keen to support in the years ahead. More details will come at the start of 2017.
Enjoy your week.

ESSSN Garden Award On the 29th of November 2016, our school was awarded the Judges Award for the ESSSN (Eastern Suburbs Sustainable Schools Network). Our school was entered into the competition by Mr. McGuiness as a part of the Student Leadership and Primary School categories. We had entered the SRC’s project of the ‘Bin Stations’ which have now been set up around the school. The ‘Bin stations’ were organized by the SRC to help to further educate the younger students about the importance of recycling and composting. The SRC organized fundraisers to raise money to buy the new bins that were required. As a part of the awards night, Mr. McGuinness and SRC
representatives were able to participate in learning about how
to build and maintain frog ponds. We were also fortunate
enough to meet Costa Georgiadis, an Australian gardening
expert who presents on the TV series Gardening Australia.
SRC Recycling Tips Using a reusable, hard plastic container. The SRC environmental tip for this week is to use reusable plastic containers for your lunch and recess. There are many reasons why you should use hard plastic containers rather than plastic bags. These reasons include:
It will save money.
It is more environmentally friendly and as our school is close to the beach, any plastic bags left lying around could potentially end up in the ocean, and kill many different species of sea life.
PSSA Last Week
PSSA This Week The final round of the summer PSSA competition will be held tomorrow. As always we look forward to seeing many parents, carers and friends at our games supporting our teams. We thank Mr Crowther and Mrs DeBartolo for all their efforts in successfully coaching our PSSA teams this season.
Junior T-Ball Report Last Friday the Junior T-Ball team played against Botany Public School. It was a close game, in the first half Botany was winning, but then Maroubra Bay showed excellent team work and communicated well on the field. This meant that we were able to catch up to Botany quickly. Maya G made a great contribu-tion to our team, scoring 2 home runs on the day. In the first term of T-ball when we played against Botany they won against us by a large margin, although thanks to all of our excellent team work and efforts over this year we were able to improve our skills and win the second game against them with a final score of 18-12. We have had a great season so far and we would like to thanks Mrs DeBartolo for all of her hard work in coaching our team this season. Scarlett G J
