DESCRIPTION OF THE FESTIVAL
The MAHAGUYOG Festival was coined to represent the four (4) agricultural products
grown abundantly in the Municipality of Sto. Tomas, Batangas. It stands for MA – mais
(corn), HA – halaman (plants), GU – gulay (vegetables), and YOG – niyog (coconut). It
is held every last Saturday of February as a prelude to the feast of St. Thomas of
Aquinas, the town’s Patron Saint, as thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest of crops by
the farmers. It also supports the One-Town, One-Product (OTOP) program of the
National Government that promotes livelihood and entrepreneurship through Agri-
tourism.
Specifically, this week – long celebration of the MAHAGUYOG Festival, through
characterized by street parades, pageantry, and a lot of merry – making, has the
following for its objectives:
1. To promote the Municipality of Sto. Tomas as one of the tourist destinations in
the south;
2. To encourage tourism and spread its benefits of bringing in investment, foreign
exchange and employment, thereby contributing to poverty alleviation;
3. To affirm and promote the cultural heritage of the Tomasinos, and their sense of
unity.
