ISO 9806: How to test Solar thermal collectors.
No requirements, no pass/fail
Standard is adopted in many countries as national standard:
DIN EN ISO 9806, ÖNORM EN ISO 9806 etc.
Other standards/certification schemes are referring to the ISO 9806:
EN12975, SRCC OG-100, AS/NZS 2712 etc.
Currenty valid edition ISO 9806:2013
Revision under the «Vienna Agreement»,
-> Revision of ISO standard under lead of CEN/TC 312/WG1.
Convenor: A. Bohren (presenter)
What’s new?
Scope of the standard ?

4
Tracking collectors
- Require energy to operate
- Not stagnation safe
- Self protecting
Cogenerators of Heat and
Electricity (e.g. PVT)
Open the scope: Include «all» Sun2Heat

Façade Elements / Solar activated Building Shell, «unglazed» collectors,
Low temperature systems, Swimming pool collectors, Condensing
collectors, etc….
All that is Sun2Heat.
Open the scope: Include «all» Sun2Heat

NEW: Collectors with specific attributes
ESTESC Webinar, ISO 9806, 27.03.17
A. Bohren
7
Adapted test procedures for 5 categories
Collectors using external power sources for normal operation
Collectors with active or passive measures for self-protection
Collectors co-generating thermal and electrical power
Wind and/or infrared sensitive collectors (WISC) (*)
Façade collectors
* WISC:
Replacing: unglazed Collectors, uncovered Collectors, non covered Collectors,
Swimming pool Collectors, etc.
These are all deleted from the standard and not existing anymore.
NEW: Performance -> One representation for all
ESTESC Webinar, ISO 9806, 27.03.17

8
Presentation of performance results is independent of
Flat plate, Evacuated tube collectors, Steady-State, Quasi-Dynamic,
Unglazed, Parabolic Trough, PVT, Switching collectors, Air Collectors,
Liquid Heating, WISC, etc.: Total of 31 Parameters is required.
All other terms already there from
steady state and quasi dynamic
Reduced temperature difference Tm*
is not existing anymore

Standard reporting conditions (SRC)
All test reports provide the same information in the same format
independent of the collector type for
- Thermal performance
- Incidence angle modifier.
Big advantage for marketing, software, subsidies, new technologies

Consequences & Hopes
ESTESC Webinar, ISO 9806, 27.02.17
A. Bohren
17
Standard is more open to new technologies.
Hope: New concepts.
Hope: No discrimination of technologies
More flexibility for faster testing
Hope: Reduce testing time
Better description of test procedures:
Hope: Less discussions and less “bad” testing
Uniform representation of all performance results
Full comparability of performance results
Hope: Stop discussions about test methods.
Hope: Better comparability of performance results
Hope: Focus on performance and not on m2
Drawbacks
ESTESC Webinar, ISO 9806, 27.02.17
A. Bohren
18
Simulation Softwares must be adapted
Test labs have to adjust some processes and tools.
Subsidy schemes and other official regulations must be adapted
Outlook
ESTESC Webinar, ISO 9806, 27.02.17
A. Bohren
19
Standard is currently at CEN/ISO and should be circulated very soon for
Final Voting
