Seminar
Together with the biennially held Convertech JAPAN, Advanced Printing Technology Exhibition, Prototype and Contracted Manufacturing Exhibition, the 2017 edition of the Converting Technology Exhibition saw its highest number of visitors to date (53,106). In addition to major converting equipment manufacturers such as OKAZAKI MACHINE INDUSTRY CO., LTD., Techno Smart Corp., HIRANO TECSEED Co., ltd., and FUJI KIAKI KOGYO Co., Ltd., the show hosted exhibitors presenting solutions related to reducing environmental impact, handling short-run production, and automating/controling manufacturing processes. Other exhibitors provided offerings related to printing technologies (gravure, flexo, etc.) and peripheral equipment.
Likewise, neo functional material 2017 went beyond its conventional scope of functional coatings and additives this year to include the “neo functional paper zone”, which featured functional paper/nonwoven and cellulose nanofiber, among others, and hosted the Society for Specialty Film pavilion. 3Decotech Expo 2017 also attracted a wide range of visitors as it highlighted paint-free decoration technologies and featured Idemitsu Unitech Co., ltd., a first time exhibitor, who exhibited together with a die-mold manufacturer, printing converter, and coating company. Meanwhile, seminar themes including the potential of OLED and paint-free decoration attracted standing-room only crowds.
The open-call “Printable Electronics Idea Contest” hosted by the Printable Electronics exhibition provided a hint to specific future applications. One example was the PE Award winning combination of Mino Japanese paper and printable electronics technology offered by the Industrial Technology Center, Gifu Prefectural Government, which exemplified the growing application base and grabbed the attention of visitors.

Standing-room Only Panel DiscussionDuring the first two days, the event hosted panel discussions covering the potential of OLED and paint-free decoration. The OLED session included Akio Takimoto, Ph.D, CTO/Division Manager at Japan Display Inc. and other top managers from Dai Nippon Printing Co., ltd. and Zeon Corporation, who spoke intensely about Japan’s strategic awareness of Korea. Meanwhile, the Decoration session included Kiyoshiba Mase, General Manager of the Organic Material Engineering Division at Toyota Motor Corporation, and Takayuki Miura, President of Fu-se Vacuum Forming Ltd., as well as ranking members of BASF Japan and Idemitsu Unitech Co., Ltd. The panel’s honest discussion of the future of automotive interior components was animated, and drew laughs and surprise from the crowd. The standing-room only crowds at both hinted at the height of interest among the visitors.
Printable Electronics Grand Award Industrial Technology Center, Gifu Prefectural GovernmentThe Industrial Technology Center, Gifu Prefectural Government, exhibited a sheet of Japanese paper printed with a proximity sensor-type light switch that responds to the wave of a hand. This technology also received high marks for its potential to create a new industry and market by fusing the local traditional industry of Japanese paper making with printable electronics.
6 Themes For the first time, the event included the “neo functional paper zone”, which featured functional paper/nonwoven and cellulose nanofiber, among others. Members of Society for Specialty Film also hosted their own pavilion. These new faces attracted much attention.

Dry Laminator Reduces Installation Footprint and Energy Use by 75%ORIENT SOGYO
ORIENT SOGYO featured their MDL-600 medium width dry laminator. Unlike conventional wide flexible packaging laminators, the MDL-600 can be run by one operator and only requires one-fourth the installation space and energy. It is also exempt from VOC emissions regulations. Including the heater and cabinet, the installation footprint is L6,690×W2,840×H3,220 mm. The MDL-600 can handle substrate widths of 200–600 mm, a maximum speed of 100 m/min, a primary and secondary unwinding roll diameter of 400 mm, and a rewinding roll diameter of 450 mm. The rewinding unit uses a single-axle air chuck. The adhesive is applied using a direct gravure coating method and dried with hot-air (electric heater).
Marketing a Printed Film Ink Cleaning System in JapanNihon S & H
First announced at drupa 2016, Nihon S & H exhibited the Netherlands based Polymount's Film Cleaner, a machine designed to remove ink from printed films and return these to their original state. After the roll of printed film is set in the machine, the material is unwound and sent through a solvent-free cleaning liquid as a micro-fiber brush removes the ink from the surface. Next, a squeegee removes the cleaning fluid from the film, which is then water washed, dried, and rewound. The cleaning fluid can be filtered, allowing 99.6% of the fluid to be reused. Any discarded fluid volume can simply be replenished. The removed ink is discard as industrial waste. The system can clean any type of ink except UV and EB curable inks. The maximum treatment speed is 50 m/min., and the sturdy frame allows the machine to be continuously operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Film Cleaner can treat PE, OPP, CPP, PET, and Ny films, as well as aluminum foil, of 12–200 μm in thickness.
3D Culture Medium Made of Spun CollagenTaki Chemical
Fish scales are devoid of any viruses common to humans, so the collagen found therein is safe. This collagen also has a highly-oriented triple helix (fibril) structure not seen in mammalian collagen. After extracting the collagen without causing any damage, Taki Chemical then processes the collagen into solutions and sheets. The fibril structure allows the collagen sheets to be compacted without using cross-linking agents, and the sheets are easy to handle because they retain their rigidity even when immersed in culture fluids. Moreover, the fibril structure allows for characteristics not seen in other types of collagen, such as the ability to grant specific functions. During the exhibition, Taki Chemical introduced its spinnable "Blue Collagen F-15A" (under development). Blue Collagen F-15A is a gel with a viscosity of approximately 2,000 Pa ・ s that is made by concentrating a 0.3% collagen concentration solution down to 15%. Blue Collagen F-15A has good spinnability and can be formed into threads of a few tens to a few hundreds of micrometers in diameter using standard wet-spinning equipment. The fibers can then be bundled or woven into fabric-like material.
Rare Earth Element-free Silver Doped Zeolite Fluorescent Substances for Anti-counterfeitingRENGO
Gaiaphotons (under development) are a new type of fluorescent substance that does not contain any rare earth elements, yet will emit light when exposed to ultraviolet rays. Gaiaphotons are produced by doping zeolite with silver—easily procured through a recycling technology perfected in Japan—using cation-exchange and heating this compound in a standard atmosphere at around 200°C. This process has high productivity, uses far less energy than conventional fluorescent substances, and is low cost. The color of the emitted light and light emission conditions can be calibrated by adding other elements to the silver-doped zeolite, by changing the heating temperature, and by changing the type of zeolite carrier. In addition, when exposed to specific light wavelengths the new material achieves a light emission intensity that exceeds that of existing fluorescent substances. Applications include next-generation high color rendering LED lighting, anti-counterfeit inks, cosmetics, sensors, and toys. As with the company's Cellgaia, a high-function pulp, Gaiaphotons can be crystallized inside cellulose fibers to produce fluorescent fibers that emit light when exposed to specific light wavelengths. These fibers are being developed as an anti-counterfeit application.
Creating New Markets by Combining Printed Electronics and Local IndustriesIndustrial Technology Center, Gifu Prefectural Government
Mino Paper, a type of Japanese paper (washi), is a traditional industry local to the City of Mino in Gifu Prefecture. During the show, the Center exhibited a paper lantern made by combining this strong, flexible Mino Paper with printed electronics. The capacitance proximity sensor used in the lantern, which will turn on and off with the wave of a hand, was patterned with screen offset printing. One problem during development was the extreme roughness of the Mino Paper surface, which would tear when the electrode was patterned with standard screen printing. Given the additional need to improve snap-off, printing variation, and the pattern edges with standard screen printing, the Center switched to screen offset printing to print the electrode. The results showed less variation and sharper pattern edges. The screen offset printing machine was produce by MINO GROUP Co., Ltd. of Gujo City, Gifu prefecture. Screen offset printing first transfers the ink pattern to a blanket before depositing the ink on the substrate. In this way, the blanket absorbs the solvent from the ink, which allows for a pattern with a highly rectangular cross-section.
Hybrid Decoration Applies Three-tiered Decoration to Automotive Interior ComponentsNAVITAS
NAVITAS’s NATS (Navitas Air-heat Transfer System) 3D decoration equipment utilizes a vacuum and hot compressed air to form complex geometries, including deep-drawn products, 3D shapes, acute steps, and shapes with holes. The system only transfers the design printed on the film and not the film itself, which eliminates the need for trimming, realizes high operability, and reduces costs. NATS can be used as a replacement for painting and hydraulic transfer, and can also be used to form strong adhesion sheets. During the show, NAVITAS promoted hybrid decoration methods using NATS, hot stamping, pad printing, and in-mold equipment to the automotive industry. Examples included side mirrors embossed with texture that made visitors want to touch them; side mirrors with a logo formed by combining pad printing, masked coating, and NATS that will shine under reverse lights; and side mirrors with metallic lines formed by combining hot stamping, pad printing, and NATS.
