Project Title: Project Type: Remodel, Reconstruction and Upgrades
Anchorage - Campbell Creek Trail Surface and SafetyImprovements
State Funding Requested: $160,000 House District: Anchorage Areawide (11-27)Future Funding May Be Requested
Brief Project Description:Funds will be used for assessment, design, engineering and construction document development forthe rehabilitation of the Campbell Creek Greenbelt. The scope of work will include trail resurfacing, signage, amenity upgrades, drainage improvements and safety upgrades.
Funding Plan: Total Project Cost: $2,500,000 Funding Already Secured: ($0)FY2014 State Funding Request: ($160,000)Project Deficit: $2,340,000 Funding Details:
2014 State funding of $160,000 will result in design development of construction documents used for construction cost estimate which will
then be used to determine the amount needed for the 2015 Funding request.
Detailed Project Description and Justification:Funds from this grant would be used to begin a multi-year, comprehensive trail repair program to address serious safety andsecurity concerns on the Campbell Creek Trail. The plan elements will include the rehabilitation/replacement of cracked andheaving asphalt, bridges, underpasses, amenity upgrades and improved signage and wayfinding.
Trails provide non-motorized links between residential areas, parks and schools, close-to-home recreation, and a sense ofcommunity. They increase economic development potential and contribute to a healthy community, protect water qualityand fish habitat and provide wildlife movement corridors. Anchorage enjoys several premiere Greenbelt trails -- ChesterCreek Trail, Campbell Creek Trail, Coastal Trail and Ship Creek Trail -- that are highly appreciated, prized and utilizedcommunity asset. Residents can enjoy wildlife, spawning salmon and natural habitat that is becoming scarcer within citylimits along all of these trail systems. The Greenbelt trails in turn provide residents a multitude of benefits like clean air, clean water, flood control, wildlife habitat and healthy recreational opportunities.
The Anchorage Bowl Park, Natural Resource, and Recreation Facility Plan outlines strategies for existing trailimprovements. The most important strategy identified is to continue to upgrade existing Areawide trails through systematicrepairs and rehabilitation. The Municipality has over 250 miles of trail and there are recent indications that there is failinginfrastructure. Trails are flooding at major road underpasses, trails are eroding along the coastline and rivers, trail pavementis cracking and suffers from root damage and bridges have not had adequate structural review.
