Woes of a Project LeaderWoes of a Project Leader
• Life for a Project Leader isn’t easy:– Has to heard Lions! (not just Cats)– Has to organise people
• Who don’t want to be organised
– Has to give talks at important colateral functions– Has to set up agendas
• In every agenda– There is a First Talk
• Project Leader
– There is a Final Talk• Project Leader
– There are all the talks in between• The important people who do real work
– There is the Penultimate Talk• Extremely Dangerous:
You never know what he will say He will steal your best slides And he will say something about what you wanted to say …
» but probably not quite how you wanted to say it.

What does a System Run Coordinator Do?What does a System Run Coordinator Do?
• Represents you at the weekly meetings– Negociates time slots
• Combined running• Calibration
– Expresses the opinion of the management• Might sneak in one or two of his/her own
• Keeps track of and schedules system activities– In between beam fills– During “Technical Stops”
• Coordinates system configuration updates– Calibrations, firmware updates, patches, etc.
• An “Equivalent to” system run coordinator– Doesn’t know about OTP or OTSMOU

Calorimeter Trigger: Commissioning HistoryCalorimeter Trigger: Commissioning History
• Hardware:– 2007:
• Running in ATLAS since M3 (June 2007)– 2008:
• Installation complete Q1 2008
• LTPIs and combined partitions Q2 2008
• Ready for first physics Q3 2008
– 2009• Frequent cosmic running
All L1Calo triggers commissioned and running• Regular Wednesday LArg/L1Calo sessions
Refinements of timing Energy calibration Noise hunting
• Firmware consolidation Algorithms, readout Studies of problematic channels Now running combined digital-error free @ 85 kHz
• Optimized setup Digital filtering (FIR filters) for “bunch-crossing ID” (BCID)
• On to REAL Physics!

What is in a Run Report? What is in a Run Report?
• Summary of configurations– Calibrations– Triggers– Timings– Receiver settings– Bad channel history
• A look backward– 2009
• A look forward– 2010

• And they played the game• More or less to plan
• In fact, better! • Beam arrived early …

Future Fun Future Fun
• Eddy currents and image currents– What happens to ATLAS when there is significant beam– Do you remember the hemispherical bump on a flat infinite plane?
• More energy and luminosity with trigger rates that are easy to see
– 2009 running wasn't really the year of L1Calo!
• Oh ... – and calibrations.
