WHEN DOES THE RECRUITING PROCESS START?

Due to the rise in athletic scholarship need and the increase of available
information for college coaches, the recruiting process is starting earlier than
ever before. According the NCAA, college coaches are starting to identify 7th
and 8th graders as recruits and even starting to offer scholarships to prospects
before their freshman year.

With the volume of prospects today, and recruiting regulations that limit
the amount of time coaches can be on the road evaluating, college coaches
rely heavily on third-party resources to build their list of student-athletes
to actively recruit. Every sport has major third-party sources that collect
prospect data, verify the information, and make it available for college
coaches. Coaches then use this information to perform their initial search to
identify student-athletes that fit the academic and athletic guidelines of their
program. This is the first step college programs take to decide if they will
continue to actively recruit a prospect.

There are nearly 8 million high school student-
athletes in the U.S., and few more than 1,900
college programs – having the skill on the field isn’t
enough to get spotted by college programs.

After making their list, college coaches need to see prospects play. Coaches
do not have the time or money to evaluate all prospects in person, they rely on
online video delivered through third-party networks to do the majority of their
initial evaluations. This allows them to search and view videos of prospects
based on specific criteria that match with their program’s needs.
When posting your highlight video to get noticed, you need to do more than
just put it online. Posting your video in a verified recruiting network allows
coaches to follow you, track what coaches and programs are viewing your
video and profile, and also alerts coaches of your interest by letting you follow
specific programs.

RECRUITING FACTS
Have clear expectations of the college programs you qualify for based on
athletic and academic performance, whether that’s DI, DII, DIII, NAIA or NJCAA.
Accordingly U.S. News & World Report, more than 50% of the top 25 colleges are
not FBS schools. Nothing is more important than finding the college fit that is right
for you not only for athletics, but academics as well. Do your research: student-
athletes serious about competing at the college-level need to research and contact
at least 50-100 realistic programs.

WHAT IS MY COACH’S ROLE?

Your coach can take care of your development on the field or on the court,
but getting an athletic scholarship is your responsibility. Getting successfully
recruited can be a full-time job, and your high school or club coach probably
can’t dedicate the time, or have the resources that the athletic recruiting
process requires. The commitment and passion college programs are looking
for has to come from you.
College coaches recruit student-athletes, not parents, or high school coaches. Student-athletes need to take control of their recruiting process and educate themselves on how to build relationships with college coaches.

After an initial evaluation with a National Scout, qualified recruits are approved
for a Scouting Evaluation and free Profile Activation by an NCSA Head Scout. This
evaluation with a recruiting expert will:

- Unlock the student-athletes profile, making them viewable and searchable by
college coaches.
- Be an opportunity to review custom recruiting game plans they qualify for, which

HOW TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR RECRUITING PROCESS
2012 COMMIT TO CORNELL UNIVERSITYMy NCSA experience was definitely a helpful one. In my opinion, NCSA helped
most with explaining the rules and timelines of football recruiting. I switched
to football from soccer, so I really didn’t know much about the sport and
the recruiting process. I signed up for NCSA around February of 2011, and
immediately got to work following the set by step instructions given. I think
this proactive approach is what really led to my ultimate college decision. I
noticed that I was a lot further ahead in the process than a lot of other local
kids who had college aspirations. NCSA always answered my questions
promptly, and really taught me how to communicate with coaches. NCSA
really guided me through the process, and helped me stay up to date with
what I should be doing. In my opinion, the “To-Do List” was really the most
important thing that helped me to be proactive in my recruitment.
