Welcome To
0 CITYo
History Delphi was named and platted in 1828 by
General Samuel Milroy on 100 acres donated by William Wilson for the seat of Carroll County. The county was named for Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Henry Robinson was the first settler in the settlement of Delphi. The first means of transportation in and out of Delphi was provided by the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1840. The Wabash Railroad came into the community in 1856, followed by the Monon Railroad in 1882. The city was first chartered in 1866.
Tradition Delphi is located in the fertile Wabash Valley
and is the county seat of north-central Indiana's Carroll County. With its historical buildings and homes, Delphi is a fine example of the midwestern's rich heritage. Delphi enjoys the quiet, friendly community life of a hardworking small town while having access to all of the cultural and educational attractions of the larger cities. It is located just 68 miles northwest of Indianapolis, 125 miles from Chicago, and 15 miles from Lafayette and Purdue University.
·~ . --~/T / !
The historic resources of Delphi are many. A fine Greek Revival style community library was built by the Carnegie Foundation in 1905. The city has identified over 125 architecturally significant structures for the historic walking and driving tour. The Baroque Renaissance style courthouse harbors one of the finest county Historical Museums in the state.

Natural Resources The fertile soils of Carroll County support
some of the finest crops and farming operations of the midwestem heartlands. The county is crossed by the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers, by Deer Creek, Rock Creek, and Wildcat Creek which also harbor lush green valleys and are a sparkling accent to the flat checkerboard of corn, soybeans and wheat.
In addition to the major denominations represented by the many churches in Delphi are the Old German Baptist and Amish church congregations. These honest, hardworking people add strength and diversity to the community.
Education The Delphi school system revolves around a
unique high school. The structure itself is a fine example of rich surfaces and efficiently organized spaces that form a total learning environment. A fine example of the new architecture for education is to be found in the recently completed middle school. Along with the vocational wing, these structures highlight the strong educational system in Delphi. Two fine elementary schools round out the system.
Purdue University is located just 15 miles away in Lafayette, as is Indiana Vocational Technical Institute. Indiana University extension is 38 miles away in Kokomo.
Transportation Delphi has four major highways passing
through the community. These are U.S. 421 and State Roads 39, 18 and 25. Interstate 65 is within 15 miles.
The community is also serviced by Norfolk & Western, Louisville and Nashville Railroads.
Another aspect of Delphi's transportation picture is the federal, state and locally funded municipal airport. The 2900 x 60 foot runway has just recently been resurfaced. The airport is lighted for night operations. With aircraft rental, flight instruction, fuel and charter transportation being available, an average of 15 to 20 aircraft are based at the airport.
Industry Delphi supports a diversity of local light
industry, all of which are long-time established firms within the community. The industries play an important role in the well being of the area. The employment conditions of the area reflect a generally stable pattern. All of the industries are pleasingly integrated within the Delphi community.
Industrial Sites All major utilities are available in sufficient
amounts to accommodate any new plant. At the present time, 75 acres are available for development.
Healthcare The Delphi community is serviced by 4
doctors, 2 dentists, 2 optometrists, and 1 chiropractor.
St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center, located in Delphi, is an 82-bed skilled and intermediate
t
care facility. An affiliate of St. Elizabeth Hospital, St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center specializes in skilled nursing and rehabilitative services for residents in north central Indiana. The skilled care unit is primarily used for post-hospitalization stays and as a transition between intensive hospital care and home. The staff helps residents arrange discharge planning needs, such as a visiting nurse and home delivered meals. The intermediate care unit is often chosen by residents who want long-term care but don't need the intensive nursing or therapy services. Nurses are on duty at all times. Outpatient therapy services are also provided by the center. Hospice suites are available for the care of the terminally ill and their families.
The facility is certified for Medicare, Medicaid and Insurance Coverage. For more information about the center, contact the Social Service Department, (317) 564-6380 or (317) 742-0361.
