When: November 8, December 5 (1/2 day), January 13, February 3 (1/2 day)
What:
‣ Non-lab classroom teachers met in self-selected Inquiry Groups to study these topics:
‣ Small Group Instruction
‣ Differentiated Word Study and Vocabulary
‣ Units of Study in ELA
‣ Powerful Whole Class Lessons
‣ Lab Classroom Teachers attended a TLA workshop as a cohort to learn how to implement Readers’ Workshop

Lab Classroom Visits
When: November 28, January 31, February 27, March 21, April 12, May 18
What:
‣ Gradual release of responsibility for demonstrating Readers’ Workshop Teaching Strategies to Lab Classroom Teachers
‣ Nov 28 and January 31
‣ Becca Ward demonstrated RW in lab classrooms for the other lab classroom teachers to watch
‣ 4 lessons demonstrated in different classrooms
‣ all 6 lab teachers plus reading and speech specialists viewed
‣ Feb. 27, March 21, April 12
‣ Lab classroom teachers co-planned with Becca and then taught the lessons with her support for their non-lab teacher colleagues to watch

‣ Becca taught 2 additional demonstration lessons for non-lab classroom teachers to observe each day
‣ 19 non-lab teachers total observed across the 3 dates

‣ Alden Hosted Lab Visits
‣ TLA was not onsite
‣ Lab classroom teachers volunteered to demonstrate for more of their colleagues
‣ Two reading specialists prepared the day and ran the Hosted Lab Visit Protocol themselves
‣ complete release of responsibility to Alden staff
‣ 6 additional teachers observed
‣ May 18
‣ TLA coming for one more round of hosted lab visits in one lab classroom teacher’s class
‣ 5 additional teachers will observe

‣ Literacy Leadership Team meetings after school on each lab visit day- 11 teachers and 2 administrators make up the team
‣ generated the team’s vision for excellence in reading instruction
‣ communicated vision back and forth between grade level colleagues and the team itself
‣ reviewed reading curriculum materials

Visits off campus to other districts
When: March 27
Where: Milton, Marshfield, and Framingham
What:
‣ Teachers self-selected their destinations off campus or elected to do onsite work with TLA consultant and curriculum supervisor
‣ Framingham visit: Many Alden Teachers attended TLA Guided Observation visit to the Hemenway Elementary School in Framingham where they saw Readers’ Workshop teachers teaching lessons and talked with staff and TLA consultants
‣ Milton visit: Teachers visisted classrooms teaching Readers’ Workshop
‣ Marshfield visits: Teachers visited classrooms - some using an anthology and some using a blend of anthology with Readers’ Workshop
