Powdered Alcohol ‐ Palcohol
What is it? A new product that soon will be hitting grocery, liquor, andconvenient stores in your community is called Palcohol. Palcoholis simply a freezedried alcohol in powder form, packaged insmall packets that promise an easy way to take a stiff drink onthe go. The product comes in rum and vodka form, as well as inmixed drink flavors like Cosmopolitan, Lemon Drop, andKamikaze. According to Palcohol it was created since powder islight and compact and wouldn't be a burden to carry. When goingon activities like hiking, biking, camping and a refreshing adultbeverage is craved, those activities don't lend themselves tolugging heavy bottles of wine, beer or spirits. How it is it consumed? The powdered alcohol will come in a bag. You're meant to pourabout five ounces of water into the bag, shake it, and then drink itout of the bag. You can also pour the contents into a glass andadd water to it. What are the current legalities? The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau grantedPalcohol "label approval" on April 8, 2014 only to withdraw it 13days later. Reason being the label approvals were issued in errorand have since been surrendered. Palcohol's parent companyLipsmark said in a statement "there seemed to be a discrepancyon our fill level, how much powder is in the bag" and theapprovals were surrendered on the afternoon of April 21, 2014.Lipsmark said, "The powder itself has been given the okay, butthe product labels have to be resubmitted to the Alcohol andTobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for approval." Only then after theapproval of the labels can it be distributed. Palcohol has twoformulas awaiting approval: a beverage formulation that is
ingestible and an industrial formulation that you cannot ingest.Palcohol has resubmitted labels for approval to the bureau, which is part of the Department of Treasury. It is possible theproduct will be out this fall. What are the concerns about Palcohol?
Some health experts are concerned it could be easily misused orabused, with potentially dangerous consequences. The risk ofabuse is high, experts say. The convenience of the packetscould encourage overconsumption of alcohol, as well asaccidents caused by intoxication, such as drunken driving. Dr.Kennon Heard, an ER doctor and medical toxicologist at theUniversity of Colorado said because Palcohol is a new productthere's a risk for inadvertent misuse by people unfamiliar with itspotency. "The other potential is that given the flavors it comes in,there's the potential for it to be very appealing to small children,"he said. The makers of Palcohol say the powders will beavailable to taste like cocktails such as a cosmopolitan andmargarita. Heard says he's aware of a number of instanceswhere people have figured out how to inhale ethanol through anebulizer or other medical equipment that turns liquids into mist. Additionally, some experts are concerned that the new powderysubstance can be inhaled like illicit drugs such as cocaine andheroin. This would transmit the substance through the sinuses tothe brainblood barrier, which would result in an immediate high.
