Background: In 2014 the Utah Biomass ResourcesGroup received a grant from the US Department ofTransportation’s SUN Grant program to scale-up themobile pyrolysis technology developed by Amaron Energyof Salt Lake City. Using the rapid kiln technology ofthe pyrolysis machine, Amaron has demonstrated howto transform woody biomass into a variety of productsincluding biochar and bio-oil. The abundance of beetlekilled timber in the west makes for plentiful feedstockopportunities. Mobile pyrolysis is a sustainable methodfor woody biomass utilization, something needed for the22 million acres of forestland in the Northern Rockiesimpacted by bark beetles. Through pyrolysis, biocharsequesters carbon.

Amaron’s pyrolysis kiln is built around a 15 foot long, 24inch diameter tube. This rotating metal tube is heatedfrom the outside with gas burners to temperatures of 400to 600 degrees Celsius. The tube is in constant motionand this allows the feedstock (wood chips) to be rapidlyheated. The extreme heating of such small particles in alow oxygen environment quickly transforms the wood intothree potentially high-value products biochar, bio-oil andsyngas.

Objectives: The objective of these projects are todemonstrate the efficiencies of rapid, mobile pyrolysiswhile promoting partnerships and cooperative efforts thatwill encourage the expansion of this technology in Utahand beyond. Watch more rapid kiln pyrolysis videos.
