RABBIT ISLAND
Rabbit Island is 90 acres of forest and sandstone rising out of Lake Superior, four miles east of Mich
Keweenaw Peninsula. It is a unique environment home to a variety of ora and fauna including large whitered maples, bald eagles, nesting birds, salamanders, and more. Native lake trout and salmon swim in the surrounding the island. The weather is palpable and can vary day to day, creating beautiful vistas and humexperiences. A conservation easement insures that the islands ecosystem will remain protected forever.
THE RABBIT ISLAND RESIDENCY
Founded by Robert Gorski and Andrew Ranville in 2010, the Rabbit Island Residency is a platform to invesexpand, and challenge creative practices in a remote environment. By living and working on Rabbit Island resengage directly with the landscape and respond to notions of conservation, ecology, sustainability, and res
With a frontier spirit informed by the idea that wilderness iscivilization, the residency reects on the inprovided by the hundreds of years of settlement and division of land. The island itself an unsettled and undspace enables residents to pursue research and develop work related to these ideas, creating interpreand even solutions.
No more than 3 supported residencies are awarded per summer period (June-September). Selected appwill receive funding to cover travel expenses and a materials stipend. Residents will also be awarded an exhat the DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, Michigan, 2.5 hours from the island. A catalogue will be produconjunction with the exhibition.

WHO CAN APPLY
The Rabbit Island Residency is open to individual applicants worldwide. Small collaborative groups (2-3 p
may also apply. The minimum age requirement is 21. The residency is open to visual artists of all disci
as well as writers, poets, architects, designers (graphic or industrial), musicians, lmmakers, composer
choreographers.
While we are supportive of scientic research on the island and encourage collaborative art and science prop
the majority of our funding comes from arts funding agencies. We are therefore unable to provide fund
scientic members of a collaborative proposal. Those applicants should secure separate funding in add
the resources available from the Rabbit Island Residency.
Due to the nature and location of the island the residency is not handicap accessible and unable to accomm
applicants with mobility issues.
WHEN TO APPLY
Applications are accepted year-round, however the selection committee meets once per year, usually
August.The application deadline for summer 2015 residencies is August 22nd, 2014.

RESIDENCY AWARD & SUPPORT
The level of funding varies from year to year, our
goal is to provide each resident with a generousunrestricted honoraria.

premier contemporary art space in Michigans

Specially designed exhibition catalogue featuring
your work, published by the museum. A residency founder or sta member will provide an
orientation to living and working on the island.
The island is stocked with tools, equipment and
a growing library. All resources are made freely
available to residents.
Connections to the Keweenaw Peninsula
community including several local institutions and
resources where works may be produced (ceramics
facilities, book printers, metal shop, wood shop,
and other fabricators).

2. Visit www.rabbitisland.org/artand pay the $20 application fee.
3. Visit www.rabbitisland.org/apply and complete the application form, making sure to include the
transaction ID.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
No more than 8 works should be featured per artist.
Include the title of each work, year, and short contextual captions if necessary.
Time-based work samples such as audio or video should be 3 minutes in length or shorter.
Writers or poets should submit 5 pages or fewer of writing samples.
We recommend a simple and easy-to-navigate layout to showcase your work.
