SummaryHanabiisacooperativegame,i.e.agamewheretheplayersdonotplayagainsteachotherbutworktogethertowardsacommongoal.Inthiscasetheyareabsentmindedfireworksmanufacturerswhoaccidentallymixeduppowders,fusesandrocketsfromafireworksdisplay.Theshowisabouttostartandpanicissettingin.Theyhavetoworktogethertostoptheshowfrombecomingadisaster! Thepyrotechnicianshavetoputtogether5fireworks,(1white, 1red,1blue,1yellow,1green),bymakingaseriesrisinginnumber(1,2,3,4,5)withthesamecoloredtiles.

Getting Ready Placethe8Clocktilesfaceuponthetable.Stackthe4Fusetilesnearbywiththelongestfuseontopandtheexplosiononthebottom.Placethe50singlecolortilesfacedownandmixthemuptomakeadrawpile.Note,a6thmulticolorsuitisincludedinthegame,butitisforadvancedplayonly,pleaseseeVariantssection.

With2or3players,eachplayerselects5tiles. With4or5players,eachplayerselects4tiles.

Wewillrefertothesetilesinfrontofeach playersastheir‘hand’.

MULTICOLOR VARIANTSVARIANT 1Addthe6thsuittothegameandattempttocreateall6fireworks.Inthisvariant,themulticolorsuitisnotwild,it’saseparatefirework.

VARIANT 2SameasVariant1,exceptuseonlyonetileofeachnumber(1,2,3,4,5)forthemulticolorsuit.

VARIANT 3Addthe6thsuittothegameandthesetilesarenowwild.Inthisvariant,youcannotcalloutthemulticolorsuit.Instead,themulticolortilesalwayscountasthecolorinyourclue.Butwhenplayingthetile,itcountsandbuildsasthe6th(multicolor)firework.

VARIANT 4Thegamedoesnotendaftertheroundwherethelasttileispickedup.Itcontinuesuntiltheplayersaredefeated(3FusetilesflippedoverORifanindispensabletilehasbeendiscarded)oruntiltheplayersarevictorious(allthefireworksarecompleted).Theplayerscanthenfindthemselveswithfewertilesintheirhandattheendofthegameandthescorescaleisnotused:thefireworksdisplayhastobeperfect.(Canalsocombinethiswithanyoneothervariant.)

STRATEGIC ADVICEAplayerwhoisgiveninformationcanrearrangehishandinordertoputthetilesconcernedinanorderwhichiseasierforhimtoremember(ontheleft,ontheright,standinghorizontallyorvertically).

Theplayerscanlookatthetilesinthediscardedpileatanytime.Ifaplayerdiscardsatilethathehasnoinformationabout,heruns theriskofgettingridofatilewhichcouldbeusefulincompletingafirework.Sometimesaplayerwillhavenochoiceandwillhavetodiscardatilethatheknowsnothingabout.However,therearemultiplecopiesofthetiles(exceptforthetileswithavalueof5);sodiscardingonedoesnotnecessarilymeanthatthefireworkcannotbecompleted. Clearlyidentifyafireworkthatyouknowyoucannotcomplete:forexamplepullingoutthelasttileintheseriesslightly.ThetilesofthecorrespondingcolorcouldstillbediscardedtoflipClocktilesbackfaceuponthetable.

COMMUNICATING WHILE PLAYING HANABICommunication(andnoncommunication)betweentheplayersisessentialtoHanabi.Ifyoufollowtherulesclosely,youcanonlycommunicatewithyourteammateswhenyougivetheminformationandflipaClocktile.However,youcanplaywhicheverwaysuitsyoubest:setyourownrulesregardingcommunication.Youcouldalwaysallowcommentslike“Istilldon’tknowanythingaboutmyhand”or“Sodoyourememberwhatyouhaveinyourhand?”

CRUCIAL! : The players MUST NOT look at their own tiles! They must set them on the table so that the other players can see the fronts of the tiles (showing the symbols) and they only see the backs (with Shinto gate). They are not allowed to look at the fronts of their tiles during the game until they are played. This would dishonor them and taint their reputation as master pyrotechnicians!

The GameTheplayerwiththemostcolorfulclothingbeginsthegame.Theplayersthentaketheirturngoinginaclockwisedirection.Onhisturn,aplayermustcompleteone,andonlyone,ofthefollowingthreeactions(andheisnotallowedtoskiphisturn):1. Giveonepieceofinformation.2. Discardatile.3. Playatile.

NOTE: When it is a player’s turn, his teammates cannot comment or try to influence him. This is highly dishonorable and will bring great shame upon you.

1. GIVE ONE PIECE OF INFORMATION.Inordertocarryoutthistask,theplayerhastoflipoveraClocktileonthetablesoitisnowfacedown.Hecanthentelloneteammatesomethingaboutthetilesinfrontofthatteammate.

IMPORTANT:Theplayermustclearlypointtothetileswhichheisgivinginformationabout.(Thussaying“Youhavezeroofsomething”isnotallowedasyoucannotpointtoanything.)

Twotypesofinformationcanbegivenandtheplayergivingtheinformationchoosesonlyonetypetogive: A.InformationaboutonespecificCOLOR(and only one)

or

B.InformationaboutonespecificVALUE(and only one)

or

“You have 1 tile with a value of 5 “You have 2 tiles with a value of 1”

IMPORTANT:Theplayermustgivecompleteinformation.Ifaplayerhastwogreentiles,theinformercannotonlypointtooneofthem,hemustpointtoBOTHgreentiles.

NOTE: This action cannot be performed if there are no Clock tiles face up on the table. In that case, the player has to choose to perform a different action.

2. DISCARDING A TILEThisactturnsoverafacedownClocktileonthetablebacktofaceup.TheplayerannouncesclearlythattheyareDISCARDING,thenplacesatilefromhishandinthediscardpile(separatedawayfromthedrawpileandfaceup).Hethentakesanewtilefromthedrawpileandaddsittohishandwithoutlookingatit.

NOTE: This action cannot be performed if all the Clock tiles are face up on the table. The player must perform a different action.

3. PLAYING A TILETheplayertakesatilefromhishandandplaysittothecenterofthetable.Twooptionsarepossible: A.Thetileeitherbegins,addsto,orcompletesafireworkandit

isthenaddedtotheappropriatecolorfirework. or B. Thetiledoesn’tbegin,addtoorcompleteanyfirework.

Discardthetileoutofthegame,thenflipthetopFusetilefacedownbesidethatstack.Thefuseisburningshorterandtimeisrunningout.

Afterplayinghistile,hethentakesanewtilefromthedrawpileandaddsittohishandwithoutlookingatit.

How the fireworks are built:Therecanonlybeonefireworkofeachcolor.Thetilesforafireworkhavetobeplacedinrisingorder(1,2,3,4andfinally5).

Therecanonlybeonetileofeachvalueineachfirework(so 5 tiles in total)

BONUS for completing a fireworkWhenaplayercompletesafirework—i.e.hesuccessfullyplaysthe tilewithavalueof5—flipafacedownClocktilebacktofaceupon thetable.Thisadditionisfree;theplayerdoesnotneedtodiscardatile.ThisbonusislostifalltheClocktilesarefaceuponthetable.

End of the GameThereare3waystoendthegameofHanabi:1. ThegameendsimmediatelyandislostifthethirdFusetileis flippedover(thusrevealingtheexplosion).

2. Thegameendsimmediatelyanditisastunningvictoryifthefireworkmakersmanagetomakethe5fireworksbeforethetilesrunout.Theplayersarethenawardedthemaximumscoreof25points.

3. Thegameendsifaplayertakesthelasttilefromthepile:each playerplaysonemoretime,includingtheplayerwhopickedupthe lasttile.Theplayerscannotpickuptilesduringthislastround(asthepileisempty).Oncethislastroundiscomplete,thegameendsandtheplayerscanthenadduptheirscore.

SCORE 3 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 5 = 16Inordertocalculatetheirscore,theplayersaddupthelargestvaluetileforeachofthefireworks.
