SPRING 2017
HOW IS THIS PROJECT FUNDED? In February 2016, President Obama announced his Fiscal Year 2017 budget, which included a $75 million grant administered by the FTA to fund the Center City Connector. Seattle Public Utilities and Seattle City Light will contribute approximately $30 million toward the utility relocations. The City’s budget also includes a local match of $45 million through 2020.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?The City of Seattle is building a modern streetcar system that will provide new mobility options, support economic growth, and strengthen connections in Seattle’s densest neighborhoods.
The Center City Connector will join the existing South Lake Union and the First Hill Streetcar lines, creating new north-south connections across downtown.
When complete, 5 miles and 23 stations of convenient streetcar service will be available to access hundreds of key destinations, including Pike Place Market, Colman Dock, and Link light rail.

Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) & SEPA Addendum issued
Project highlightsAdds convenient and easy-to-understand transit service links between the 2 existing streetcar lines
Supports frequent and reliable service with streetcars running up to every 5 minutes during peak hours between South Lake Union and Chinatown/ International District
Meets need for transit options as Seattle grows
Connects to regional transit including ferries, buses, the Sounder Train, and Link light rail
Improves access to downtown social services and affordable housing
Includes connections for people walking and biking through coordination with bike and pedestrian plans
PARKING & LOADINGTo allow space for dedicated streetcar lanes - while also balancing other modes like walking, biking, deliveries, and through-traffic - most on-street parking along the route will be removed. We are committed to helping people park and load efficiently by subsidizing off-street parking and working closely with businesses and residences on load zone replacement.
Of the approximately 4,400 off-street parking stalls in lots and garages along the alignment, an average of over 1,100 stalls are available at a given time throughout the day. This project includes funding for DowntownSeattleParking.com, which makes it easy to find parking availability, rates (some as low as $3/hour), and directions so downtown visitors can park in a garage and get to their destination easily on the streetcar.
WHAT CHANGES ARE COMING?TRAFFIC MOVEMENTThe Center City Connector will shift 1st Ave’s priority to people walking and taking transit. The streetcar will run in its own center lanes along 1st Ave. See the map below for how the 1st Ave changes will affect left turns.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?The City of Seattle included the Center City Connector project in its 2012 Transit Master Plan to improve north-south travel through downtown. We evaluated different alignments for the project, and selected 1st Ave as the best street to connect the South Lake Union and First Hill streetcar lines. In 2014, the Seattle City Council approved funding for project design, and the project was on its way. The Seattle Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) published an Environmental Assessment for the project in May 2016. On February 27, 2017, FTA published a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), completing the federal environmental review process.
Example water main work
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?Utility relocations are planned to start this summer. We expect to finish streetcar design by 2018 and the new streetcar line will open in 2020.
