Embracing Our RootsThe roots of our family tree reach all the way back to a visionary group of military wives in post-war Europe. In October 1955, 250 ladies from various chapel groups across Europe came together for a
convention in Berchtesgaden, Germany. This event sparked the beginning of Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC). The following year, PWOC held a second conference in Berchtesgaden. Attendance doubled. PWOC has been growing and multiplying ever since.
Five decades of growth and expansion
Over the last 50+ years, we’ve seen exciting answers to prayer in so many different ways. PWOC has spread to various parts of the world. We’ve expanded to serve all branches of the military. We’ve grown from just serving military wives to including all women who are associated with the military in any kind of way. With PWOC chapters in so many areas of the world, we are able to reach out in friendship, and in God’s love to many women everywhere.
Many backgrounds. Four aims.Today, PWOC is made up of women from all different cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, church denominations, and ages. Like the many facets of a diamond, our diversity makes us all the more beautiful, interesting, and unique. We’re completely focused on four specific aims: lead, teach, develop, and involve. We lead women toward Christ, teach them through worship and Bible study, develop them in discipleship and service, and involve them in the work of their chapel.
Meeting the needs of 21st century women
Women associated with the military today need
an organization like PWOC even more than women in the ’50s did. They’re exposed to more pressures and hunger for more fellowship and support. PWOC has risen to this challenge by reaching out to them in new ways. We’re excited about what’s ahead as we continue to reach out in service to these amazing women.
