Nancy Brenan Daniels to Visit OGQG in February
What a way to begin our exciting year of workshops with our Nancy Brenen
Daniel‟s “Slice „em & Dice „em.” Looks like this may be a “quick finish”
quilt for you. Can‟t wait to see the various fabric choices and of course the
finished product. Don‟t forget to share them
at Guild...March‟s workshop will be pre-
sented by our own Kathy Van Bruggen.
“Hummingbird Delight” is a feast for the
eyes! Kathy really makes her classes “no
stress” and newcomers as well as experi-
enced appliquérs will enjoy her class.
Even though many workshops are full
please put your name on the wait list as life happens and openings often come
up. Stop by the workshop table to see project pieces and have your questions
answered.
Since we are no longer providing snacks or coffee, tea, water, please bring
your own. There is a refrigerator to store lunches. Purchased lunches can be
bought nearby. Please bring your own extension cord too. Looking forward to
seeing you! Marie and Justine

It was a pleasant return
to guild and fun seeing
everyone after a long
holiday break. I would
like to extend a warm
thank you to Marie Blash
for performing the instal-
lation of officers and
making it special. I
would also like to thank
the new officers, stand-
ing and general commit-
tee members for accept-
ing their positions. They
will all help to make
2010 a successful and
memorable year.
Beginning the guild year
with our member show-
case was a special treat.
Linda Gray and Karen
Powel not only wowed
us with their quilts, but
they explained their
techniques, trials, valu-
able clues into color
choices and tips on prob-
lem solving and working
with difficult instruc-
tions. As an added bo-
nus, we were given a
show of shows with the
President’s Parade as it
unfolded before our
eyes. We were reminded
of the deep ties amongst
our guild members and
the care with which each
quilt had been carefully
planned and executed;
serving as a befitting
tribute to each of the past
presidents.
This year brings some
wonderful speakers to
our guild, Nancy Bren-
nan Daniel, Cathy Van
Bruggen, Karen Kay
Buckley and Anita Shak-
leford to name a few.
Merci Apodaca, our
second vice-president,
has done a great job in
contracting with these
speakers for a line-up of
workshops in both piec-
ing and appliqué. You
won’t want to miss out
on these classes.
An important focus this
year will be on our mem-
bership and their in-
volvement in the guilds
events. Thayone Jones
introduced us to the UFO
Challenge and Sally
Lansing has us working
on the guild challenge
“What Mama Said”.
Also, start thinking of
what you would like to
contribute to the quilt
show as it is going to be
your time to shine. Per-
haps you have a recently
completed quilt, or one
in the works that you are
particularly excited
about. Linda Gray and
Joyce Oberle, the quilt
show chairs, will be tell-
ing us a lot more in the
months to come.
I am grateful for our
members many contribu-
tions. Our members are
our most valuable re-
source. This is your
guild and together we
make it an exemplary
guild. I, along with the
Officers and Committee
members, welcome and
solicit your continued
comments and sugges-
tions.
May your needles al-
ways be threaded and
ready to sew the fabric
with which you envelope
your loved ones.

The Basket Brigade Reports!
Our theme for January starts with New Years and Winter. Creating baskets full
of colors such as cool blues and snowy whites reminiscent of Jack Frost, as well
as bright and cheery celebration colors to ring in the New Year 2010 will be our
goal. As our members donations make our baskets delightful we would like to
extend a warm thank you to all who donated in December and during our meeting
in January. Last month our baskets earned $155.10. Our LUCKY winner where
for the first basket was Elaine Ohgi, and the second LUCKY winner was Taffy
Harper. May you stay dry and warm during our rainy season.

The 300 plus members
of the OGQG have re-
cently accomplished an
amazing feat. You,
somehow, managed to
keep a secret for over a
year!!!! I am in awe of
my second President’s
Quilt. As I have told
you before, “You are the
most generous group of
people that I have ever
had the pleasure and
honor of being associ-
ated with.” I shall treas-
ure both of my Presi-
dent’s Quilts, always.
They both represent the
wonderful memories
that I have from these
past two years. In addi-
tion, these two exquisite
quilts represent friend-
ship that was lovingly
stitched into each. I
truly appreciate the time
and effort that went into
the creation of both.
Thank you to all of you
who worked on my
quilts: the organizers
and designers, including
Marie Blash, Linda
Gray, Sharon Hritz,
Carol Logue, the
piecers,
the ap-
pliquérs,

and machine embroid-
erer Karen Powel. You
are all so talented.
Through my two lovely
Historian Books, I can
relive these last two glo-
rious years. Thank you
Mary Stockard and all
who helped put them
together. They, too, are
mementos to cherish.
I would like to thank
my husband, Scott, for
being my mainstay dur-
ing my terms in office.
He has been at my side
as my proofreader, and
offered ideas and en-
couragement the entire
time.
Once again, I would
like to thank all of you
for a memorable time.
You are an extraordi-
nary group; it has been a
joy to serve as your
President for these past
two years. Lots of Hugs
for all of you,

Six Spectacular December Ladies!
Our Unsung Heroes for December were six very special Guild ladies. All six
ladies work very quietly behind the scenes for the betterment of our Guild. It is
ladies like these who make our Guild strong. Dodi deSha, Sara Forster, Nancy
Henry, and Marie Van Vorst all seem to hide each month while hanging Show
and Tell quilts. They create a wonderful display each month so that all may en-
joy the efforts of fellow members. Thank you Dodi, Sara, Nancy, and Marie
for a job well done. Each month, using her time and her own fabric, Phyllis
Derigo stitches five or six pillow cases that she donates to the philanthropy pro-
gram. She has made over 100 so far. What a special gift, thank you Phyllis.
Sally Lansing might be known as “the rescuer.” She has an eye for seeing
whatever needs to be done. She filled in to bring the Round Robin Challenge to
fruition. She even enlisted Mary Stockard to help with the labels for Round
Robin. Thank you, Sally, for your thoughtful insight andMary for assisting
Sally with the labels. Congratulations to these six spectacular ladies!!!!!!!!

Philanthropy Needs Your Help in Final Quilting
Last year was a great success and we are looking forward to serving in
many of the same areas as we have in the past. We are looking at new
needs and will keep you all updated as things develop.
Now that it is a new year, we are promoting the quilting of small quilts that
have been sandwiched. There are approximately 60 of these quilts, so stop
by in February and pick one up. They can be stitch-in-the-ditch, cross-
hatched or free motion. Patterned stitching is nice, but not necessary.
These quilts need to be completed because we have over 50 quilts that need
to be sandwiched but there is no more room to store them. This is a won-
derful way for you practice before attempt your own “keeper” quilts.
Come see us!

Quilt Show Slated for November 5 and 6
Thanks For All Those Lessons
Helen Williams!
OGQG is fortunate to have a veteran quilter
available for mini-lessons after Guild at
nearly every meeting. It’s a great spot to
brush up on techniques or learn some new
ones from a lady with skills to spare. There
are often useful handouts, and it’s never
more than 15 minutes or so! She’s a kind and
witty teacher. Hang around!
Mark your calendar for Friday November 5 and
Saturday, November 6 as these are the dates for our
Quilt Show this year. We've titled the show " A
Patchwork of Quilts" and wish to create a "down
home" feel to the show.
Our goal is to have no more than 10 vendors as well
as one quilt appraiser. The best thing about this quilt
show is that you'll be able to showcase one, possibly
two, quilts. We'll be asking you for lap quilts and
wall hangings as they will fit best in the show.
We need help in many areas, so when asked, please
say yes.... help is needed on many committees such
as publicity, quilt show layout. etc. , as well as white
gloving, set up and take down of the quilts, so there
will be a place for you to
help out. Please think
about where you can
help and let us know.
Our next quilt show
meeting is Friday, Febru-
ary 19, 9:30 AM at
Joyce's home... see you
there!
Any questions, please
let Joyce Oberle and/
or Linda Gray know..
Thanks!

January‟s Unsung Jewels Get Thanks from Joyce
It was my pleasure to be able to present the Unsung Hero Awards to three notable
ladies at our January Guild Meeting. Angie Jared and Wynona Welty are simi-
lar to doctors as they are “on call” for the 24 hours before each meeting. While it
may not be necessary for them to pick up the keys for Acker Hall, they are always
there, just in case. Thank you Angie and Wynona for being available on a mo-
ment’s notice. Sandi Polizzi has been a special helper, just for me, this past year.
She very amiably toted the Brave and Tally Boards back and forth each month.
She set out the Braves and placed the Guild Banner on the podium. She always
“sensed” when I needed an extra hand. Thanks Sandi, for being my “right-hand
gal.” We are so lucky to have such great “behind the scenes” ladies such as your-
selves. Congratulations!!!!

Quilter’s UFO Challenge To Begin This year you have an opportunity to win prizes and recognition for
turning UFOs into quilts! Here’s the challenge:
Over the next year, turn 5 UFOs into quilts (no garments, bags, dolls,
etc. please). If you didn’t get the challenge rules at the January Guild
meeting, the rules and form will be available again in February. If
you did get a form, remember to bring your completed form (keep a
copy for yourself!) and $10 to the February meeting. I’ll be drawing
the first number, and that project will be due in April.
Here are the rules:
Decide which 5 of your UFOs need to be quilts by 2011
Finished means quilted, bound, and labeled.
One quilt will be due every two months; the first quilt will
be due at the April Guild meeting. The order in which
quilts will be due will be random to add to the fun and chal-
lenge. The order will be determined by drawing in the
months in which no quilt is due, in case you finish and
want to work ahead. The last UFO will not be due until the
January 2011 general meeting because of the holidays.
When you turn in your entry form, you’ll be given a partici-
pant ribbon to wear this year. As you turn in each quilt,
you’ll get something to pin on the ribbon to show how
many of your UFOs have become quilts this year.
Everyone who finishes at least one of the five UFOs will be
entered into a drawing for a nice prize.
Everyone who finishes all five UFOs will be entered into a separate
drawing for the GRAND PRIZE! Your odds of winning a prize will
never be better. All the prizes will be determined based on the num-
ber of people participating in the challenge. Really, everyone who
participates wins because you will have finished quilts that might
otherwise have lived their entire lives as UFOs stashed in the back of
a closet!

Farewell Sandy Barrad … OG Quilter Sandy Barrad passed away shortly before Christmas following a lengthy period of ill health.
Sandy and I met in a 9 month long class with Doris Carmack in 1994. Doris in-
vited us to visit the guild and we joined in January 1995. Sandy was a member of
the Talking Threads Friendship group (formerly known as the Grim Rippers)
since it was formed. She so enjoyed the Guild and quilt shows, and quilt shops.
She also made trips with the Traveling Quilters. Sandy had been ill for many
years with lung disease and complications. She had been unable to attend Guild
meetings for quite some time. She is survived by husband, Burt, son David,
daughters Sherry and Ellen and 4 perfect grandchildren. We'll miss you , Sandy.
