ThemajorintheCommunicationofScience&Technology(CSET)urgentlyneedstoberevisedandupdated.Inthisproposal,Ipresentanupdateontheprogramitself(&I)andpresentthereasonswhysomechangesmustbemade(&II).Thecurrentcatalogcopy,withchangestotheprogramrulesnotedasstrike‐through(deletions)orinred(newtext)isfoundonpp.6‐12.Theproposednewcatalogcopyisfoundonpp.13‐17.TheproposalhasbeenvettedandapprovedbytheAffiliatedFacultyfortheCSETProgrambyavoteof5infavor,0opposed,4notvoting.Inaddition,JenniferFay(FILM)andJonathanMetzl(MHS)havebothenthusiasticallyendorsedincludingFILMandMHScoursesaschoicesforelectivesintherevisedprogram.Letters(emails)ofsupportfromAffiliatedFacultyofCSETandfromProfessorsFayandMetzlareprovidedonpages18‐24.AstringofquestionsfromtheDeanCampbellandtheCEPandanswersfrommeareattachedonpp.25–30.I.ProgramStatusI.a.StudentmajorsTheCSETmajorwasapprovedasaninterdisciplinarymajorduringthe2001‐2002academicyear.ItappearedforthefirsttimeintheUndergraduateCatalogin2002‐2003.ThefirststudenttoformallygraduatewithamajorinCSETdidsoin2005.Studentsintheclassesof2002,2003,and2004didprogramssimilartotheCSETmajor‐‐‐andonwhoseprogramsthemajorwasmodeled‐‐‐butformallycompletedself‐created,interdisciplinarymajors.Thenumberofstudentspursuingthismajorissmall(<10)butreasonablyconsistent.OneortwoofourmajorsmatriculateatVanderbilteachyearspecificallybecauseofthisprogram,asitremainsunique,toourknowledge,inthecountry.Asweshowinthetable,below,CSETmajorsaredoingwell,post‐graduation,totheextentthatwehavebeenabletokeeptrackoftheirpost‐graduateplansandpursuits.

II.ReasonstorevisetheCSETmajorManyreasonsnowexistthatmotivatetheneedtoreviseandupdatetheCSETmajor.

1. Toobig.Whenthemajorwasestablished,interdisciplinarymajorswererequiredtoencompass48hoursofcoursework;theA&Sfacultyhavesincerelaxedthatrule.Currentrulesfordefinedinterdisciplinarymajorsrequiresuchprogramstohave27to48hours.CSETstillrequires48credithours(plusseveraluncountedpre‐reqcourses).Nootherdefinedinterdisciplinarymajorrequiresmorethan45hoursandmostrequire42orfewerhours(seetable,below).Reducingthenumberofhoursmayattractmorestudentstothemajorand,moreimportantlywillallowCSETmajorstomoreeasilypursuesecondmajors,especiallyinoneofthenaturalsciencedisciplines,whichwouldbeavaluableoptionforthesestudents.

2. TheA&Srulelimitingstudentstodouble‐countingonly6hoursaspartofboththeinterdisciplinarymajorandasecondmajorisahugeproblem.ReducingthenumberofrequiredhoursforCSETwilllessenthisproblem. AstudentwhodoublemajorsinPhysics(35hours)andMath(35hours)must

takeatleast29hoursinPhysicsand29hoursinMaththatareuniquetothosemajorsplus6hoursthatcountforbothmajors.Thus,thisstudenttakesatotalof64hours(29+29+6)tocompletethe70hoursforbothmajors.

AstudentwhodoublemajorsinCSET(48hours)andEES(minimum38hours)musttakeatleast42hoursinCSETand32hoursinEESthatareuniquetoeachmajor.Thisstudentmustcompleteatleast80hours(42+32+6)forbothmajors.ItmightseemreasonablethatastudentdoingtheCSET/EEScombinationcoulddouble‐countthreecourses,therebyhaving‘only’39and29uniquehoursinthetwomajors,andtakingatotalof77totalhours(39+29+9)tocompletebothmajors,butourstudents’appealsonthisissuehavebeenturneddown.

StudentsintheSchoolofEngineeringarenotaffectedbythisrule,so(forexample)aCSET/BMEdoublemajormaycountasmanyas24hours‐‐‐ES140(arequiredcourse),BME255W(anadvancedwritingcourse),BME260(anoptionfortherequired,calculus‐basedstatisticscourse),ES210W(anotheradvancedwritingcourse),allthreerequired‘engineering’courses,the‘fifthselectedcourse’‐‐‐towardbothCSETandBME.BecausewehavestudentsinbothENGandA&SmajoringinCSET,thisdoublestandardisproblematic.

3. CMST237isrequiredofallmajors;however,thecoursemaynotbetaughtagain.(In2011‐2012,weofferedCSET150asasubstituteforsomestudents.WehaveidentifiedsomeonewholikelywillteachCSET150in2012‐2013andbeyond.)Weneedasetofrequirementsthatdoesnotrestsofirmlyonthisonecourse,whichhadbeentheonlycoursethatallCSETstudentsmusttake.

4. Whenthemajorwasfirstputtogether,theFilmStudiesprogramdidnotexistandMHSofferedfarfewercourses.Asitis,studentslearnabitaboutmakingvideosinCMST237andCSET150,buttheylearnmostofthisontheirowninordertocompleteassignments.SeveralFilmStudiescourseswouldbereasonablechoicesforstudentsintheCSETmajor(bothasthemeanstolearnpracticalskillsinvideoworkandforlearningskillsinstorytelling),buttherulesforthemajorlacksufficientflexibilitysoatthistimewecannotcountFILMcoursestowardanyofthe


CSETrequirements.Similarly,manyMHScourseswouldbeexcellentchoicesforCSETmajorsbuttherulesofthemajorputmostMHScoursesofflimits.

5. ES120isnolongertaughtandES140isnotservingthepurposeforwhichitwasintended,atleastforCETmajors.ES120/140waspresumablygoingtobeabroadintroductiontotheengineeringdisciplinesforCSETstudents,butmostofthemenduptakingES140intheirsenioryear(withfirst‐yearengineeringstudents)afterhavenalreadytakensomeoralloftheirregularengineeringcourses.Sothiscourseisnotservingthepurposeforwhichitwasintended,atleastforCSETmajors.

6. Thestatisticscourseofchoice(Math180)isnolongeroffered.Thelossofthiscourseforcesstudentsintomuchmore(mathematically)advancedstatisticscoursesorintoEcon150,whichhascalculusasapre‐reqbutisnottaughtasacalculus‐basedstatisticscourse.StatisticsremainsanimportantcomponentofwhatwethinkCSETstudentsshouldstudy,butstudentsneedabroadersetofoptionsforfulfillingthisrequirement.

7. ThecoursesfromtheSchoolofEngineeringthatCSETstudentstakedonotsatisfytheoriginalintentofhavingstudentstake‘engineering’courses.StudentsmustchoosethreecoursesfromtheSchoolofEngineering.Historically,manyA&SstudentshavechosenEngineeringSciencecourses,butmostofthesearenolongertaught.OtherpopularchoicesareEngineeringManagementcourses.WhiletheESandEMGTprogramsofferinterestingcourses,thesecoursesdonotsatisfytheoriginalintentofhavingstudentstake‘engineering’courses(e.g.,MaterialsScience,ChemicalEngineering).

StudentsintheHonorsProgramsignupforCSET296(HonorsThesis).StudentsmayenrollinCSET296foroneortwosemesters,forupto3hourspersemester.


Thefinalthesismustbesubmittednolaterthantwoweeksbeforetheendofclassesinthesemesterofgraduation.
