Il biomonitoraggio umano è una delle azioni considerate prioritarie all’interno della Strategia Europea Ambiente e Salute (ciclo 2004 -2010) lanciata dalla Commissione Europea nel 2003 con l’acronimo di SCALE “based on Science, focused on Children, aiming at raising Awareness, using Legal instruments and including Evaluation”

- Stesso disegno campionario (approccio bi o trifocale, o gradiente urbanizzazione)
- Stessa metodologia analitica (laboratorio centrale)
- Stesso materiale (questionari, moduli consenso, etc,.)

WOMENBIOP uno studio di biomonitoraggio su donne in età riproduttiva(Life Plus 2008, DG Environment, co-funded by the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and the Sea )
• Caratterizzazione dell’esposizione
a POP in funzione di specifiche
situazioni ambientali/alimentari• Caratterizzazione di trend spaziali • Identificazione di eventuali
sottogruppi a rischio• Attivazione di programmi di
sorveglianza sanitaria

Definizione di una strategia di comunicazione da
utilizzare negli studi di biomonitoraggio
• Caratterizzazione di trend temporali• Correlazione ambiente/salute (storia
riproduttiva)
The Stockholm Convention
Parties shall undertake research work geared towards alleviating the effects of POPs on reproductive health, and make the results of their research and monitoring
accessible to the public
Each Party shall promote and facilitate: Awareness among its policy and decision makers with regard to POPs;• Provision to the public of all available information on POPs• Development and implementation, especially for women, children and the least
educated, of educational and public awareness programmes on POPs as well as on their health and environmental effects.

…although biomonitoring can provide reams of statisics about chemicals peopleare exposed to, it can’t necessarily indicate whether such exposures are likely to make them sick (Science, 2004)
..although testing for a chemical can take just a fewdays, discerning its impact on health takes years(ibidem)
…high levels aren’t necessarily dangerous, typical levels aren’t necessarily safe(ibidem)
