● Project Brief:
➢ The Better India promotes stories of positive change. Its Karnival
platform works towards connecting buyers with household products
that are socially responsible and have a low ecological impact.
➢ Life-Cycle-Assessments (LCA) were conducted to develop a
‘Household Cleaner Supplier Scorecard’ for Ecological Impact
Reduction to facilitate objectively and thoughtfully precluding the
poorest performers (in terms of ecological impact) from an initial set
of 6 suppliers across 5 household cleaner product sub-categories.

● “Life Cycle” refers to the major activities in a product’s life span right from
raw material extraction, to manufacture, use and maintenance to its final
disposal.
● LCA is a tool to assess environmental aspects and potential impacts
associated with a product, process or service, by
○ Compiling an inventory of relevant energy and material inputs and
environmental releases
○ Evaluating the potential environmental impacts associated with
identified inputs and releases
○ Interpreting the results to help decision makers make a more
informed decision

Goal :
• To conduct Life-Cycle-Assessments (LCA) of products to identify 2-3
products with a low-ecological impact from the list of 4 products.
• To develop an Econometric Data-Disclosure Form (shared
spreadsheet/google-form) for suppliers.
• To develop a Household Cleaner Supplier Ecological Performance
Technical Memorandum and Scorecard Spreadsheet to facilitate
selection of products with the least ecological impact.

potential human health and environmental impacts of the
environmental resources and releases identified during LCI.
• Steps
1) Selection of impact categories
2) Classification of LCI results into impact categories
3) Characterization
4) Normalization
5) Grouping
6) Weighting

Normalization
• Normalization is a technique for changing impact indicator values
with differing units into a common, unitless format by dividing the
value(s) by a selected reference quantity. This process increases the
comparability of data among various impact categories.
• This is derived by changing impact indicator values with differing
