Nursing Defined It has not been until the last 40 years
that professional nursing organizations began to define the professional responsibilities of registered nurses.
Although there are many specialty nursing organizations, the American Nurses Association represents an authority in professional nursing without regard to the nurse’s practice environment

ANA’s Definition of Nursing “Nursing is the protection,
promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. “

ANA Standards of Nursing Practice Standard 1 – Assessment
The registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation.
Standard 2 – Diagnosis The registered nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine the
diagnoses or issues. Standard 3 – Outcomes Identification
The registered nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation.
Standard 4 – Planning The registered nurse develops a plan that prescribes strategies and
alternatives to attain expected outcomes. Standard 5 – Implementation
The registered nurse implements the identified plan. The registered nurse coordinates care delivery. The registered nurse employs strategies to promote health and safe
environment. Standard 6 – Evaluation
The registered nurse evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.

Quality of Practice The registered nurse systematically enhances the quality and
effectiveness of nursing practice. Education
The registered nurse attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice.
Professional Practice Evaluation The registered nurse evaluates one’s own nursing practice in
relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.
Collegiality The registered nurse interacts with and contributes to the
professional development of peers and colleagues. Collaboration
The registered nurse collaborates with patient, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.
