• He went to study at Oxford University
aged 16• In 1825 he was ordained a priest in the
Church of England• In 1845 aged 44 Newman became a
Catholic at Littlemore near Oxford• Newman was ordained a Catholic priest
in Rome in 1847• In 1852 Newman moved to Birmingham
and established a community of priests in the Oratory
• In 1879 Pope Leo XIII made Newman a Cardinal (he was never a bishop!)
• In 1890 Cardinal Newman died • He was an outstanding preacher and many came to listen to his sermons
• He looked after his students by helping them to understand their faith
• Throughout his life he wrote many important books and letters as well as poetry, prayers and hymns• As his faith and knowledge
