There is no denying it…change is happening at Edinboro University. Sometimes it seems to occur overnight; in other instances, it is more deliberate. But in the past 24 months – and most significantly this past year – Edinboro University is changing. These changes are not for the sole purpose of reinvention, but the result of dynamic initiatives shaped by a shared aspiration of the great things we can accomplish together. Equally important, our new directives are grounded in Edinboro’s outstanding traditions and historic milestones. This annual review celebrates the exciting advances and achievements that our collective efforts have produced – from record-breaking student numbers and philanthropy to major investments in new facilities and innovative educational experiences. More than anything, my message is one of student success, academic excellence and the future promise of Edinboro University!

As president of this dynamic institution, I relish the unique role of engaging our students, faculty and staff, encouraging them to implement new ideas and forge new concepts. I equally enjoy the privilege of sharing our vision with Edinboro’s trustees, alumni and community leaders. During the past year, we embraced the challenge to again raise the bar. Working together, we are changing the way people perceive Edinboro University. Our students and faculty are garnering regional and national recognition for their academic, professional and athletic accomplishments. In turn, those who are considering our university for their education or their career, express the determination that will ensure our ongoing success.

There are many metrics for academic success – and I believe we have been very successful this year. From grants received and research presented, to programs accredited and graduation rates, by every measure the achievements of our faculty and students are significant. Of course, academic excellence is the very core of our mission as an institution of higher education. One of my primary objectives as president of Edinboro University is to provide the resources for our faculty and staff to continue to elevate these initiatives and provide even more opportunities. Every day we must remember that a university is designed to be challenging yet rewarding, questioning more than answering, demanding whilst giving, and freeing while nurturing.

Perhaps the most visible evidence of the changes that are happening at Edinboro is the $200 million in campus development. These investments in where our students learn, live and play encourage pride and participation in all aspects of the university experience. Edinboro’s new facilities and rejuvenated campus also provide a wonderful stage for bringing the world to Edinboro – prospective students and their families, visiting faculty and accomplished alumni, renowned performers and world leaders. With the recent completion of a new master plan, we envision a vibrant, ever-evolving campus that will support Edinboro’s growing role as a preferred destination for education, athletic competition, cultural events and social activities.

Amongst the most notable barometers of the change that is happening at Edinboro is the growth and involvement of our student population. For the fourth consecutive year, student applications and admissions have increased significantly. At the same time, the SAT scores of our incoming freshman have reached new heights. Equally exciting is the involvement of students at every level. From new student orientation, through expanding homecoming activities on campus, to vociferous throngs at exciting athletic competitions, Edinboro’s students let everyone know that they are proud to wear the tartan and be one of the Fighting Scots.

When we speak to our graduates, whether from five years ago or 50, they are excited about the changes they see at Edinboro. Our alumni’s growing participation in university events, as well as their increased level of financial support strongly attest to this. In fact, the past two years of alumni contributions are the highest ever on record. The sustained involvement of alumni, trustees and other supporters of Edinboro University is essential. With the benefit of their experience, insight and philanthropy, we will remain true to our vision and mission whilst evolving to meet the challenges of the day.

Progress is often defined by very subjective opinions. Our goal is to ensure that when it comes to describing Edinboro University, all agree that great things, indeed, happen here. The university’s master plan points to a campus of distinction, one that is integrated with the natural environment and promotes sustainability. Key features of ongoing campus development will be the creation of academic “neighborhoods,” improved space utilisation and opportunities for global partnerships.

Bringing international students to Edinboro University for English language and cultural studies has already begun. Creating a unique, visionary Center for Global Leadership and Innovation & Graduate Studies is a part of the university’s master plan.

Architectural Concept: Center for Global Leadership and

Innovation & Graduate Studies

The Center for Global Leadership and Innovation & Graduate Studies could one day become the signature, welcoming structure on Edinboro’s campus. Situated where Centennial Hall now stands, the center would combine the latest advances in architectural design with state-of-the-art energy conservation systems.

As I noted at the beginning of this report, the change that has been happening at Edinboro University is dynamic. In the next year, we will begin work on the next phase of Edinboro’s campus master plan. We also will focus energy on forging relationships with more of the world’s leading academic institutions. These and other key initiatives are critical to our vision for this university.
