Mobile Devices
Mobile Phone Devices- are becoming increasingly amorphous…
(convergence)- range from smartphones to PDAs, to
camera phones, with a lot of overlap.
Carriers- Hundreds of carriers but in the U.S. Sprint
Nextel, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Alltel are the big 5.
Operating Systems- between 30 & 40 mobile operating systems
available. (Symbian, Microsoft Windows Mobile, Linux OS, Palm OS, etc

GRRR…
Challenges of the Mobile Web
• Lack of Uniformity- So many providers, functions,
operating systems
• Where’s the browser?- Can be difficult to locate on
some phones- Tough to navigate
• Costs and Speeds- Carriers typically charge you
for this access- Connection speeds can be
slow.
![Page 6: Presentation LTR version 2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050921/55527495b4c905b4598b469e/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

KEY TERMS Smartphone: a cell phone with computing capabilities Mobile Web: the World Wide Web accessed through a mobile device
INTERESTING FACTS 50% of the world’s population, 3.3 billion people, have mobile phone
subscriptions. 84% of U.S. residents have mobile phones, but a limited number of people
use them to browse the internet. For those that do browse the internet…a whopping 74% of Generation Y ,
51% of Gen X, and 35% of Young Boomers use their phones for sending or receiving text-messages (Forrester’s North American Technographics Benchmark Survey 2007), which has huge implications for library mobile functions.
