UNIQUE HIGHLIGHTS
1. Two inclined pressure shafts of 1546M length each at an
inclination of 300 successfully bored for the first time in the
world by using Tunnel Boring Machine and completed in record
time of 16 months.
2. Concreting & Grouting in the inclined pressure shafts, behind the
steel liners had been done up to a height of 800 meter by using
Schwing pump for the first time in World.
3. Total length of Head Race Tunnel is 31.52 km which is the longest
hydro tunnel in Indiabeing constructed.
4. In the Dam area, the weak zone of the hill (Fossil Valley) grouted
successfully up to a depth of 120 m in two stages with ultra fine
cement of high Blaine value imported from Japan, for the first
time in India.

Problems Encountered During Execution of Project
A. Head Race Tunnel :
Severe Rock Bursting due to high superincumbent cover
(upto 1.6 km)
Heavy sudden ingress of water of the order of 8000 lpm
with 7000 cum discharge of silt encountered in the tunnel
which had buried and damaged the TBM.
TBM refurbished and the fault zone treatment being taken
up in consultation with international experts.

Problems Encountered During Execution of Project
B. Powerhouse :
Occurrence of three major slides of Power House Back slope during
Apr04, Jun06 and Feb07.
C. Dam :
Ban on Aggregates:
Hon'ble High Court H.P had imposed ban on 03.08.07 onprocurement of aggregate from any mining source in Distt. Kullu
for all mega projects, which was lifted in March 2008. The work of
Dam and other concreting was stopped during this period of 7
months.
