Page 1: PRESBYLASIK - Lasik Fort Lauderdale FL, LASIK Eye Surgery ... · ing problems. I couldn't see TV with - out glasses--every - thing was a blur -- and I couldn't see signs when I was

For years, the mira-cle of Lasik surgeryfor vision correctionwas almost always aneither-or procedure.Patients who wantedto throw away theirglasses or contactlenses but were oldenough to requirereading glasses ontop of their distancecorrection, had tochoose one kind ofcorrection or the otherfor each eye. Now, aremarkable new pro-cedure called Presby-Lasik allows somepatients to eliminateboth problems.Jose Berrios, 64,

and his wife, AlmaMazar-Berrios, 62,both qualified for thePresbyLasik proce-dure and are thrilledwith the results.Jose, a Miami-Dade

transit driver, began torequire readingglasses years ago. Then over time, hestarted to have trou-ble seeing at a dis-tance as well, andneeded either bifocalsor two different pairsof glasses. "I wasgoing for a vision testevery two years, andthe prescription wouldalways change," herecalls. "I was reallytired of it."One day, a co-

worker told Joseabout her daughter, who had successfulLasik surgery by Dr.Stanley Braverman.Intrigued, he decidedto pay a visit to Dr.Braverman at theBraverman Eye Cen-ter in HallandaleBeach. "I hoped I'd beable to quit wearingmy glasses," he says.As a bus driver,

Jose needs to be ableto see clearly, be-cause the safety ofhis passengers candepend on it. Whenhe's not working, heenjoys going to the fir-ing range, a hobbythat also requireskeen distance vision. And when he relaxesat the couple's homein Hialeah, he likes tosurf the Internet, forwhich he needs clearclose vision. He didn'treally expect to beable to have bothproblems corrected, but he was happilysurprised."Dr. Braverman

gave me a completeeye exam," Jose re-calls. "Then he toldme about the (Presby-Lasik) procedure andsaid I'd be a goodcandidate."

Jose had the pain-less procedure andtoday, he can seeclearly both for dis-tance and for reading."It's nice not to haveto wear glasses any-more," he says. "Ienjoy being able tosee again."Jose was so

pleased with his resultthat Alma decided tosee if she might qual-ify for PresbyLasik. Amonth after her hus-band had the proce-dure, she, too, visitedthe Braverman EyeCenter. She wasdoubtful about hercandidacy, however, for a couple of rea-sons.Her prescription

was stronger andmore complex thanJose's. "I wore trifo-cals," she says. "Iwork a lot at the com-puter and I was hav-ing problems. Icouldn't see TV with-out glasses--every-thing was a blur -- andI couldn't see signswhen I was driving."The other reason

Alma wonderedwhether the proce-dure could be suc-cessful for her: "I'dbeen told I wasn't acandidate for Lasik,"she says. "I didn'tthink I'd ever be ableto go withoutglasses."But Jose kept urg-

ing her to try again. And at a visit to theBraverman Eye Cen-ter, Alma discoveredthat technology hadchanged since shelast inquired aboutcorrective vision sur-gery. During the con-sultation, she learned

that she was indeed acandidate for Presby-Lasik.Alma decided to go

ahead. "My husbandwas so happy with hisoutcome that he con-vinced me to have theprocedure," she says.Just as it was for

Jose, PresbyLasikwas successful forAlma. Now, whetherthey are at work, outfor a drive, watching amovie or walking theirdogs, two Germanshepherds and anAustralian sheepdog, they do it without theinconvenience ofglasses or contacts."I'm very happy not tohave to wearglasses," Alma says."It took me awhile tofigure out I didn't needthem anymore. I keptputting my finger onmy nose to push themup. I feel very grateful. Both of us have rec-ommended Dr.Braverman to friends." Dr. Braverman

started doing thePresbyLasik proce-dure around one yearago. It was introducedinto the United Statesapproximately sixyears ago, havingoriginally been doneusing the AllegrettoWavelight femtosec-ond laser by an ItalianEye Surgeon, Dr.Roberto Pinelli. This isthe same Laser thatDr. Braverman uses.Dr. Braverman said“this technique wasdeveloped by takingwhat Eye Surgeonsalready knew abouthow Lasik changesthe shape of the frontof the eye to eliminateglasses, and just

modifying the tech-niques to be able toreduce or possiblyeliminate the need fordistance glasses, aswell as readingglasses."

WHAT TO EXPECTWITH Z-LASIKSURGERY

All Laser Lasik sur-gery is performed ona patient’s cornea, which provides mostof the focusing powerwhen light enters theeye. Topical anes-thetic drops are ap-plied to the eye. Thesurgeon first uses aspecial Ziemer LDVfemtosecond laser tocreate a thin layer ofcorneal tissue thatcan be folded back (acorneal flap). Then, another type of laser(an Allegretto Wave-light Eye-Q excimerlaser) is used to re-shape the underlying

cornea, painlessly. After the excimerlaser treatment, thecorneal flap is reposi-tioned and bondsback into place natu-rally. The corneal re-shaping improves thefocusing power of thecornea. Although no one

can promise patients“perfect” vision, mostLaser Vision Correc-tion patients with mildto moderate prescrip-tions with or withoutastigmatism, doachieve 20/20 or bet-ter vision. This means that

they no longer needglasses or contacts todrive, play mostsports, and watch TV.Also, you can partici-pate in careers requir-ing good unaidedvision, such as police-men or firemen need.
