Black Boy Society Publisher, Nikki Fisher, spoke
with inmate, Charlmers Hendricks and he wanted
to share a few things with the Black Boy’s
growing up in today’s Society.
My Name is Charlmers L. Hendricks, better
known on the streets a of Charlotte, North
Carolina as “Champ”. I am currently 54 years
old and in a Federal Institution with 3 Life
sentences and 5 years.
My Story is like so many other young black males out there chasing a Dream and
trying to make myself rich by living in the fast lane. Believing that the rules didn't
apply to me. I actually thought I could break the law and get away with it and
shine at the same time without getting caught. As you can see the shine did not last
long and I lost my life to the system trying to win in a game that is designed for
you to fail. In other words, I was a “wanna be” gangster, drug dealer and a
criminal that got what the majority of black males that live in that world will get,
prison time, dead or shot up.
I ask myself, Was it all worth it? I come up with the same answer time and time
again, “HELL NO”! All my friends that played in my world are either dead,
snitches, handicap or in here with me wondering, What happened to us? We got
caught up in a world that none of us knew that the outcome would leave us with
nothing but ghetto dreams, no woman, no family and a bunch of red neck white
folks telling you when to eat, sleep, bathe and go to the restrooms.
This life has left me without my kids respect for me, my girlfriend is with another
“wanna be” gangster and my kids mother is in rehab. And I am wondering where
it all went wrong? Today, I wonder how I could have chosen a lifestyle that the
most conning and dangerous people in the world participating in it. The only
criteria is to be dumb, lazy and want something for nothing.
In the end I have hurt everyone that truly did care about me now they get to come
visit me in my own personal hell and have to lose a piece of themselves just to see
me. I wish I could show the world the true down side of the world I lived in and
not the Hollywood version that takes so many black men into a pipe dream of
hopelessness that I know has been a part of my adult life.
What I need most of the young black men to reanalyze that there is nothing
exciting about ending up as a fool for the same system you tried to outwit.
