Great Swamp Massacre -- Dec. 1675
Colonial militias attack Narragansett fort in RI and burn it to the ground, burning/killing 300 Indians inside, including women children. Some escaped to the frozen Great Swamp, where 300 more Indians died from wounds. Severe blow to Naragansetts.
OUTCOMES
-Killed: 3,000 Indians, 600 colonists
- 500 Indians enslaved (sold into slavery in Caribbean)
- Indians attacked 45 villages
- Metacom (“King Philip”) is killed
- Colonists take even more Indian land!! Indians are WEAKENED.
