Power factor correction formula The following formulae are used to calculate the value of power factor correction capacitor
1. Apparent power It is the load voltage x Load current Eg. Load voltage = 230V Load current = 10A Then 230x10 = 2300 VA or 2.3 KVA
2. Power factor It is the True power (W) divided by the Apparent power Eg. True power = 1KW Apparent power = 2.3KVA Then PF = 0.43
3. Reactive power or KVAR It is used to calculate the capacitor value for the particular power factor Eg. True power = 1KW Apparent power = 2.3KVA
Reactive power Q = 2 2 2.32 12 = 2.07
Then Q = V2 / X X is the load Rectance and Q is the Reactive power Eg. (230)2 / 2.07 = 25555= 25.5 Ohms
Capacitance C = 1 / 2Pi.f.c = 1 / 2x3.14x50x25.5 1 / 8007 = 0.0001249 That is 0.0001249 x 106 = 124.9uF
