Research Council Grants Publicly funded and responsible for aiding seven areas of
research, awarded directly to research institutions. Applications must be submitted to university departments direct.

Dependent on institution, course and your current financial situation.
Scholarships and Awards • Awarded for excellence and given out on discretionary basis.• Contact universities direct.
Teaching and Assistantships • Graduate teaching positions.• Increase in recent years.
University Hardship Fund • Replaces Access to Learning Fund. • Contact Student Services for more details.

Charities
• www.trustfunding.org.uk searchable site of all charitable trusts
in UK. • Stand out when applying, set yourself above competition by
applying early and doing your research. • Usually one off payments, so don’t rely on them to fund whole
course.
May be an option if research is important for advances in your area; links to local community; or if you are at disadvantage from peers.

Employer Sponsorship Employer provides course funding and potentially maintenance grants to financially assist you.
• Start by looking into schemes already in place. • Approach organisations with a proposal- benefits of study for both parties, long term
development etc. • You may have to sign an agreement with the company.

Bank Loans
The Professional and Career Development Loan (PCDL) can cover up to 80% of course fees.
• Offered by Co-operative and Barclays for £300 to £10,000. • Loans fund 2 years of study (3 if course includes placement). • Don’t make repayments until course has finished. www.gov.uk/career-development-loans/overview

Funding Bringing together multiple awards.
• Secure small pockets of cash from charities, businesses, universities and trusts.
• Will require an investment of time in searching and applying for as many opportunities as possible.

Funding for Disabled Students
• You may be eligible for financial aid through the Disabled Student Allowance (DSA).
• As a postgraduate student from the UK you can apply for DSA if you have a disability, including: a long-term health condition; a mental health condition; or a specific learning difficulty.
• DSAs are paid on top of other student finance and don’t have to be repaid.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education is a route for graduates to achieve QTS. • Funding is dependent on course
subject and individual circumstances.
