M o u n t a i nE m p i r eC o m m u n i t yCollege is high-lighting the best ofS o u t h w e s tVirginia’s youthmusic and the culti-vator of those tal-ents with therelease of “YouthMovement: ATribute to MissEllie.”
All proceedsfrom CD sales ben-efit the Home CraftDays festival andMountain MusicSchool program.
Musician andHome Craft Daysfestival organizerTommy Bledsoesaid the CD release, which includes 28old-time, bluegrass, gospel and earlycountry musictracks, celebratesthe 45th anniver-sary of the festivalas well as the life offestival organizerSue Ella Boatright-Wells and herremarkable dedica-tion to preservingmountain music.
“ Y o u t hMovement: ATribute to MissEllie” features per-formances by Billand the Belles, theWhitetop MountainBand, Todd Meadeand family, EmptyBottle String Band,Sam Gleaves,Kelsey Rae, TheButtermilk Girls,Brett Ratliff,Brandon Maggard,Corbin Hayslett, the Childress Girls, the Scott and WiseCounty JAM pro-grams, theMountain MusicSchool Band, andSycamore Hollow.
Bledsoe notedthat while the estab-lishment of HomeCraft Days in 1972brought attention totraditional musicand the musicianswho were playingit, the latest CDrelease demon-strates how thatsame music isbeing carried on
and reborn throughyounger genera-tions.
“In making thisCD, I thought aboutwhat had changed,”said Bledsoe. “Themost obviouschange was theincredible numberof young peoplewho were nowincluded in the festi-val, mostly due tothe dedication ofSue Ella. She startedMountain MusicSchool, helped getthe JuniorA p p a l a c h i a nMusician (JAM)programs startedand created an addi-tional stage at HCDto feature our youthmusicians. As aresult, dozens ofnew groups andindividual perform-
ers had been appear-ing at the festivaland we had a lot ofgood recordings. Inaddition, some ofthe second and thirdgenerations of ourlegacy performers, like Todd Meadeand his family,Martha and KilbySpencer (WhitetopMountain Band)and others were car-rying on the music. That was our focusthis year.”
P r e s e r v i n gmountain musicwas a hallmarkeffort of Boatright-Wells, and Bledsoeadded that she wasable to enjoy the CDand have a hand inthe musical selec-tions before herdeath. Tracksinclude “Darlin’
Cory” by CorbinHayslett (winner ofthe 2015Orthophonic JoyContest); LorettaLynn’s “I’m aHonky Tonk Girl”by Kelsey Rae andBill and the Belles;“Skillet Good andGreasy” byWhitetop MountainBand; and originalsongs, like“ G r a n d p a ’ sWorking Shoes” bySam Gleaves.
Several of themusicians featuredon the CD startedplaying at MountainMusic School andin the after-schoolJAM programs, including TylerHughes, BethMiller, MaggieGatley, and theChildress Girls.
Bledsoe said notonly are studentspreserving theirlegacy, but they areshaping the futureof our region.
“A good numberof those studentswho started gettinginterested in moun-tain culture aregoing deeper, widerand with more con-fidence than I couldhave imagined 25
years ago. Oncethey are investedwith a sense ofbelonging to moun-tain culture, every-thing they do isshaped or influ-enced by it. Ifmountain peopledon’t understand thepathway fromwhere we havecome to now, theywill be easily misledin the future. And
the arts are a win-dow into that histo-ry and the owner-ship of it,” Bledsoesaid.
“ Y o u t hMovement: ATribute to Miss
Ellie” is availablefor purchase atM E C C ’ sBookstore, locatedin Holton Hall, andonline atwww.mecc.edu/bookstore.
