IONIA — The Ionia Coun-ty Board of Commissionershas scheduled a public hear-ing in order to receive inputon proposed changes to thecounty’s Road CommissionBoard.
The public hearing isscheduled to take place dur-ing the board’s first regularmeeting in December, cur-rently scheduled for Tues-day, Dec. 14, at 3:30 p.m.Meetings take place on thethird floor of the Ionia Coun-ty Courthouse.
The Road CommissionBoard is currently made upof three members.
The term of board mem-ber Herb Cusack ends onDec. 31, although he has ap-plied for another six-yearterm.
Also, board member EarlStrater has submitted hisresignation to take effect inthe middle of January.
The commissioners willappoint a replacement to fillthe remainder of his term,
which ends in 2014.Faced with having to ap-
point two out of the threemembers within a month, the Board of Commission-ers felt it was an ideal timeto study the makeup of theRoad Commission Boardand possibly make changes
One change that has beenmentioned by the commis-sioners is increasing themembers from three to five. The county would be divid-ed into four areas and onemembers would be appoint-ed from each area with thefifth member from any partof the county.
“I like the idea of es-tablishing quadrants and ap-pointing a member fromeach area,” said Commis-sioner Larry Tiejema. “Thatway the local township lead-ers would know who theroad commissioner for theirarea is and can communi-cate with them better.”

PORTLAND — The Portland MainStreet program is gaining momentumafter two successful events.
Patrick Reagan, Main Street man-ager recently upadated the PortlandCity Council on the success of thePortland Pay Day promotion and Ok-toberfest celebration.
The organization hoped to make itthree in a row with the Holidayfeston the Grand event, which took placeNov. 19-20 in downtown Portland.
Reagan stated that approximately$55,750 was spent in Portland busi-nesses as part of the Pay Day pro-motion, which was held during thesummer.
“That was down a little from the$57,000 that was spent last year, butall in all it was a another successfulpromotion,” said Reagan.
“The Promotions & MarketingCommittee did a lot of work, and wehad a great event. The committee andthe businesses are already lookingforward to next year.”
Octoberfest
Reagan also reported on the suc-cess of the third annual Oktoberfestevent, which was held Oct. 16.
“This was a great event thatbrought a lot of people to the down-town,” said Reagan.
“This is the first year that we havefinished in the block financially. Wehad some great vendors, some great
activities and great food vendors. Ev-erything just went very well.”
The organization had high hopesof continuing that momentum withthe HolidayFest on the Grand event. The celebration was co-sponsored byPortland Main Street and the PortlandCommunity Arts Council.
Among the events tentativelyplanned include a window decorat-ing contest, wreath making workshopand various other demonstrations in-side downtown businesses.
“We had a Luminary Lane and avisit from Santa,” said Reagan. “Wescheduled carriage rides on both Fri-day and Saturday this year, and alsoheld our tree-lighting ceremony.”

board members that 23counties in Michigan havegone from the three-mem-ber board to five members.
Another change that hasbeen discussed is going froma board appointed by theBoard of Commissioners toone that is elected by resi-dents of the county.
Mark Howe, Ionia Countyadministrator, told the com-
missioners that there weretwo areas to consider whendeciding how to select theroad commission members.
“If you decide to have anelected board, the electionhas to take place duringa November general elec-tion,” said Howe. “In this in-stance, the election couldnot happen until Novemberof 2012.”
Howe added that with theelection method, the com-
missioners would not beable to establish road com-mission districts.
“If you have the election, all the candidates would beat-large and the candidateswho get the most voteswould get the seats, evenif they are all from thesame area.” Commissionmembers Cusack and Strat-er are both from the LakeOdessa area. The third mem-ber, Fred Chapman, is from
Orleans. The commissionersalso plan to discuss the payand benefits of road com-missioners. Currently, roadcommission board membersreceived a salary of $2,000per year, a per diem of $50per meeting and mileage toany special meetings. Mem-bers also have the option oftaking part in the road com-missions insurance plans, which include health, dental, vision and life insurance.

The recent successes have led tomore people stepping forward to as-sist the organization.
“We have really gained volunteers,”said Reagan. “I have been getting morecalls and the Main Street board hasalso been getting calls from peoplewho want to help out. To me, that is asign that the program is working.”
Reagan credited the volunteers andboard/committee members with therecent successes
“The Main Street program is not agovernment program ut is volunteer-driven,” said Reagan.
“I may be the director, but the vol-unteers are the ones who are doing theheavy lifting. These events are put onby the efforts of our volunteers whohave been doing some amazing things.I think the program has succeeded be-fore the work of the volunteers.
“What’s more is you have morebusinesses stepping up to participatein these events,” added Reagan. “TheBlock Party was had some businesssponsors who had never sponsoredanything before that. The same wastrue with Oktoberfest. And we havemore businesses taking part in Holi-dayFest. To me, that speaks volumesto the success of the program.”
Reagan said the program’s successcan also be seen in the building vacan-cy rate in the downtown area.
“When you look at this economy, you would think we would be strug-gling. But our vacancy rate is at 3 per-cent,” said Reagan.
“We have new businesses that con-tinue to come in as well as businesseswho are adding employees.”
Portland was selected as one of thefirst four Michigan Main Street com-munities in 2003.
The success of the Main Street pro-gram in Portland and other commu-nities has led to other communitiesearning the distinction.

Upper RespiratoryTract Infections
‘Tis the season....
Your child is hot, flushed, has no appetite, is listless, hasdiarrhea or vomiting, has a runny or congested nose and soundslike your Saint Bernard. OK, so it’s this flu thing - it has been“going around” you say.
These words reverberate through our Center every day. Somepeople take peace that other children are also afflicted. Thereseems to be some kind of safety in numbers it seems. The otherthing that we as a society have been taught is that this child issick. Yes, absolutely! There is no question in our minds. This is“sickness” at its best.
But wait.....
Let’s look at this in some detail.
Your child has a fever. This is actually a good thing. It isyour body’s way of literally “burning” the bug. It is also theresult of all the necessary body activities kicked into high gear tofight for survival.
All this extrawork produces extra heat -Fever. It is that simple. At the same time, however, the eyes take on a glassy appearance -the result of being continually washed with tears to cool down thecornea, which is very heat sensitive. In its wisdom, your child’sbody may want to get rid of this germ really fast - diarrhea andvomiting comes to mind. There isn’t a quicker way!
This is good!
Your child may be competing with your Saint Bernard. Itis simply another portal of exit for the germs that have invadedhis body. Breathing and respiration also increase - your childliterally exhales the invading organism faster. You’ll notice thatthe skin is moist and clammy - simply another method of exit forthe bugs. At the same time, however, you notice that your childhas no appetite. Even McDonald’s, his all time “fave” gives himthe heebie-jeebies. The reason is that his body energy is gearedtowards survival and is on emergency stand-by.There is no energywasted digesting food.
You, by now, are probably thinking, “I didn’t know that.”
There you have it - the logic behind the scenes. Pretty amazingisn’t it? In case you didn’t know this, your nervous system, thatamazing computer-Internet complex that runs all of you, isresponsible for all this marvelous activity. It is the system thatcauses your immune system to spring into action to protect you- any way it can.
This is not “sickness.” It is an expression of health. It isyour body doing exactly what it needs to do, in order to regainyour health. I am not saying you have to like it, though, but it is,nevertheless, in your best interests.
Whenyourchild isfeelinglike this, parentshave thecompulsionto intervene and interfere with this process unknowingly - coughsuppressants, anti-fever medication, antibiotics, etc. We havebeen carefully taught that a child needs these drugs to be healthy.Nonsense!Your child simply needs no interference.
There are a number of things youcan do, however, to help your childwhile his/her body is “doing its thing”;
A. Have your child checked bya chiropractor to make certain his/her nervous system is functioningoptimally so it can handle this“sickness” thing.
B. Lots to drink. Water is best but kids don’t like it.You canuse diluted fruit juice
C. Lots of rest and vegging out.
In the event that your child is not improving on his own in aweek, it means that his immune system is weak and crisis caremay be needed. Call us.

LANSING — The Michi-gan Department of NaturalResources and Environment(DNRE) encourages the gen-eral public to join huntersin the effort to provide pro-cessed wild game meat to lo-cal families in need.
Last year, more than23,000 pounds of venisonwas donated to food pro-grams throughout Michigan -enough to supply more than100,000 meals.
“Michigan’s first settlersoften relied on hunters tosupply fresh meat for surviv-al. Today, we have the op-portunity to continue that
tradition by helping thosewho are experiencing hardtimes,” says RaymondRustem, of the DNRE’s Mar-keting, Education and Tech-nology Division.
Hunters can help in oneof two simple ways. Whenpurchasing a hunting licensethey can tell the agent oftheir interest to make a mon-etary donation to MichiganSportsman Against Hunger(MSAH).
The agent will add yourdonation to the overall cost.Secondly, hunters shouldconsider taking and donatingan extra deer through one of
the licensed processors reg-istered with MSAH.
Many of these processorsalso participate in the “Givea Pound” promotion, wherehunters can donate someof the ground venison fromtheir processed deer.
Individuals who do nothunt can also support this im-portant program. Non-hunt-ers can donate by going tothe Michigan E-Store. Mon-etary donations are used tosupport the cost of process-ing the venison for distribu-tion.

Each year on No-vember 11, St. Pat-rick School
celebrates Veteran’s Daywith our annual Veteran’sDay program.
It provides our students, staff, and families the op-portunity to celebrate thosewho have served our coun-try.
Our goal is to makethis a learning and educa-tional experience for ourstudents, while also givingour veterans the respectthey so much deserve.
As usual, this year’s cel-ebration did not let me
down. I found the programto be an exciting, moving, and profound experience.
By having the veteranscome to our school, byhearing their words andshaking their hands, ourstudents receive a betterunderstanding of the sacri-fices they made on behalf ofour great nation.
The students were quite
moved by the experienceand now have a better ap-preciation of the true mean-ing of this national holiday.
This year’s program be-gan with the Posting ofColors by the Veterans ofForeign War Honor Guardled by Post 4090 Command-er George Warner.
Fr. Larry King led usin prayer and our kinder-garten students led us inreciting the Pledge of Alle-giance. Sophomore EmilyBengel sang a moving ren-dition of the Star SpangledBanner.
Military lifeStaff Sergeant Shane
Vanderkuyl, director ofU.S. Air Force recruitingfor the Lansing area andStaff Sergeant MichaelMoore, director of U.S.Air Force recruiting forthe Muskegon area hon-ored us by taking time outof their busy schedules toattend our program.
They spoke of their ex-periences in the Air Forceand the places they havebeen in service to theircountry.
They also explainedsome of the benefits ofjoining the military.
The program continuedwith high school studentcouncil president Adri-enne Thelen reading thenames of military person-nel serving in the militaryfrom St. Patrick Parish.
Adrienne’s presentationwas followed with eighthgrade students ShelbyMiller and Bailey Sch-
neider, sophomore ElleLehman, and junior Han-nah Harte reading theirVFW Patriot Pen Essays.
This was followed by arousing rendition of Amer-ica the Beautiful by theSt. Patrick first grade stu-dents.
Fr. Larry King led us ina closing prayer followedby the playing of TAPS byVFW Post 4090.
The VFW Honor Guardended the ceremony withthe Retrieval of Colors.
Thanks to veteransBefore the veterans left
the gym, every St. Patrickstudent stood in line toshake every veteran’s handand thank them for theirservice to our country. This was a moving sightand a greatlesson/experience for thestudents.
The ceremony was fol-lowed by a reception in ourparish hall, decorated spe-cifically for the veterans.
I look especially for-ward to our annual Veter-ans Day assembly.
As a former social stud-ies teacher, I enjoy sittingand listening to the vet-erans share stories of theplaces they have been andtheir personal experiences.
I am thankful and ap-preciative to have the op-portunity to meet and talkwith all of the veteranswho attend each year.
I would especially liketo thank everyone whohelped make this ceremo-ny such a wonderful andmoving experience.
Thank you to the veter-ans and their families, toStaff SergeantsVanderkuyll and Moore, and to the staff whoworked so hard to put it alltogether.
May God bless America!

With the electionsover, most po-litical headlines
are focusing on 2011 andthe policy agenda of anew administration. How-ever, the 2010 legislativesession has not finished, and I have had many con-stituent questions regard-ing what a “lame duck”session means.
In a nutshell, “lameduck” refers to session daysthat occur late in the yearwhen some politicians havelost their elections but nottheir right to vote. Othersmay be leaving due to termlimits. With more than 50percent out of office forone reason or another, thisyear’s lame duck will in ac-tuality be a very large flock.
While sometimes a lameduck can be productivewhen there has not been a
large amount of turnover, this lame duck is shapingup to be one where verylittle can get accomplished. With only a few sessiondays remaining it is unlikelythat last minute consensuscan be reached on majorpolicy issues, especially ifthey are controversial.
I do feel strongly how-ever that we can passneeded policy in less con-tentious areas, such as howto help homeowners. It isstill the mortgage meltdownthat was a root cause formany of our current eco-
nomic difficulties, and it ishard to see how we canregain a vibrant economywithout also returning toa vibrant housing market. While state law will not beable to address all housingissues, too many in Lansinghave been willing to waitfor the federal governmentto ride to the rescue. Thisis unacceptable when youconsider that
• The Michigan Home-stead Property Tax Credit, designed to protect ho-meowners, has not beenchanged or adjusted for in-flation since 1976.
• Michigan law makesit difficult for those whosehomes have been fore-closed on to determine howmuch money they needwhen exercising their rightof first refusal.
• Michigan law has re-
mained silent on additionalproperty transfer fees thatfleece homeowners of theirhard earned equity whenthey sell their homes.
• Michigan law has donelittle to address a brokenproperty tax tribunal sys-tem that does not allowhomeowners to hear theircases in a timely manner.
The Michigan legisla-ture may not be able toaddress all of the issuesthat are affecting the hous-ing market. But pointingfingers outside makes littlesense for those who refuseto take the bull by thehorns in areas where theycan make a difference andare instead sitting on theirhands. This upcoming lameduck session should there-fore still be viewed as anopportunity to get that jobdone.

Research clearlyshows the vital im-portance of good
care, intellectual stimula-tion, love and nurturingthroughout childhood andespecially the early years.
Children with close pa-rental contact and super-vision, children who feelsecure and well-loved, chil-dren who can count on theirparents’ support and disci-pline and genuine interest
absolutely soar in school…and in everything else theydo.
Conversely, children de-nied adult care, support andguidance function poorly in
school and may suffer irrepa-rable damage that will hand-icap them throughout theirlives.
The educational impact ofsuch parental neglect, how-ever unintended, is devas-tating. Sadly, this type ofneglect can, and does, comefrom homes of all economiclevels.
It is imperative that ourchildren gain parental sup-port early in their education.
The challenge is to find waysto spend time with our chil-dren and to be the best in-fluence we can be on themduring the time we spendwith them. Making the timeinvolves sacrifice and toughchoices, but it is worth it.The time we spend with ourchildren now will pay big div-idends for the rest of theirlives. Here are a few ways tothink about making time forour kids:
• List your priorities;Use calendars to sched-
ule family time.Make “To-Do” lists.• Examine your schedule;Eliminate time wasters
like too much TV.Use small bits of time for
math facts or spelling.Use time in the car for
word games.• Set specific goals like:“We will all sit down at
the dinner table for a family
meal at least three times aweek.”
• Change your schedule;Take time off to volun-
teer at school or take a tripwith your child’s class orclub
Just say “No.” It is okaynot to be on every commit-tee. A family night is a com-mitment too.
