St. George serves as the predominant entrance to Staten Island from Manhattan, yet there is no sense of place, amenities, or identity to any of its three most dominant population groups (its residents, the 55,000 Staten Island commuters, the countless tourists who take the free ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline from the harbor). We have pulled the Ferry Terminal inward, closer to Staten Island Borough Hall, creating a direct connection between this transportation hub and the rest of St. George (removing the barrier of the bus configuration and Bay Street). With the shift of the Ferry and the construction of a pedestrian piazza at the closed Bay Street create a (new) “downtown” for St. George, activated by restaurants, shops, offices, and residential units. This concentration of activity will lead development to investigate the large portion of under-used lands in the existing fabric of St. George, pulling the energy created on the waterfront closer to the community.

For the exercise we look to the Health Care economy. Our researches lead us to formulate a strategy in which we take the prevention as our goal. To do so, we create a strong linkage between health, food, and physical activity. We use as location the closed hospitals located all over New York; specifically our pilot project will be located in the Bronx, due to it significantly high percentage of obesity and diabetes.1UP provides the community with a strong center of interaction that combines leisure and recreation as a vehicle to a physical and mental healthy lifestyle. It will not only become a public investment that will encourage a community transformation but it will also create a stronger economic network that will benefit both the local and regional economy of the Bronx.

Caracas is characterized by the compresence of two different cities physically and socially divided: the planned city and the barrios, the informal city. The barrios’ inhabitants are spectators of a city that persistently denies the right to socio-economic opportunities and political participation. (de)limit aim to control the new barrios development through two different strategies. First, to connect barrios to the formal city, to give them access to the city‘s resources. Second, to delimit barrios area of expansion to reinforce the squatters identity and to create a sense of belonging to an identified community. A new street network will provide specific zones for new barrios developments and connection to the formal city. A water collection/cleaning/distribution system will provide independency to the barrios. Throughout the phasing different actors will be engaged in the project implementation: the city, the squatters’ community, and the singular household.

04_Guidelines for the restoration project of the Felice aqueduct
![Page 27: Portfolio Marta d'Alessandro](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050802/568bd4ac1a28ab203495a257/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
One of the core problems any architect working in Rome has to deal with: the relationship between architecture and history. The outstanding features of the object of my studies - the Felice aqueduct - is that it presents within its make-up an extraordinary stratification of different periods of history. It was an especially difficult, yet at the same time stimulating task to create a project able to highlight the temporal complexity of the monument and to transmit that aspect to the public.Secondly, the fact that the aqueduct crosses Rome from the centre right to the countryside south east of the city allowed me to work both on the relationship between the monument and the various fabrics of the city it runs through and on the relationship between the monument and nature.Given the complexity of the task, I divided my research up into two parts: one specifically dealing with the monument and another dealing with the relationship between monument and the context of which it is part.

The exercise involved planning and designing a city of thirty thousand inhabitants, located in an imaginary area for which a layout plan was provided. The name Metromorph means a constantly evolving shape. The city can be imagined as an organism that evolves independently, becoming increasingly complex, yet at the same time conserving the clear imprint of the regular system from which it was created. Metromorph is structured in accordance with the “strip-based city” model: six verticals stripes are distinguished by their different densities and types of buildings, and are shifted in a north-south direction to afford a sense of dynamism to the whole, creating an image of an open, unfinished city. Three large horizontal layers are set into these vertical layers, two of which are composed of large urban parks and the other of a large strip given over the services and mobility system.

M.O.D. (Market Oriented Development) is a community revitalization strategy which utilize a network of existing food markets to regenerate the local socio-economic landscape. The design intervention utilize three marketplace of Ga-Mashie neighborhood as a focal point of commercial and social mecca, underutilized open space between the neighborhood, and street network currently lacking a hierarchical application of land use. The process is divided in three steps. First, by modernization of the existing structures and insertion of specialized food processing areas, the marketplace triggers more active commercial and social interaction. Second, the creation of pedestrian oriented street network for the hybrid commercial activities stemming from the marketplace and residential around. Finally, the insertion of community capacity building programs supported both by corporation firms and government will leverage individuals’ economical ability and sustainable living condition.

Soleri imagines a city that can develop and at the same time respect the natural environment that surrounds it, making the most of natural resources (sun, wind, water), recycling the waste Man produces and abolishing the use of the car, which causes pollution. His planning and design system is aimed at giving the city back a more compact, miniaturized dimension (in other words, its complexity): in an arcological system, the built environment and the life processes of its inhabitants interact in the same way as organs, tissue and cells do in a highly sophisticated organism. Soleri’s city is no longer two-dimensional; it is conceived as a three-dimensional reality: «All that is required to comprehend today’s cities is their ground layout. [...]Since the surface of the earth is by definition a two-dimensional configuration, the natural landscape is not the frame best suited to the complex life of society. Man must therefore make the metropolitan landscape in his own image: a physically compact, dense, multilevel landscape, a solid of three congruous dimensions ».

The opportunities offered by Turin and Rome being World Book Capitals means that the National Contemporary Art Gallery has been able to organize two exhibitions which deal with the subject. In the history of its dealing with the visual arts, books have been variously themes and works. However during the 20th century, the first category was seriously affected by the crisis in iconography, whereas the second moved down new lines of development which shattered the new equilibrium between words and images until the first was subsumed or nullified by the second. This type of book, which does not use writing as a conventional code for transmitting meaning (or which simply does not use it at all) was never designed to be read. It has lost its original function, but can still be recognized as a book. The title of the exhibition is an allution to the work of art which is expected to be a book, rather than merely evoking or representing one.
